Same reason former football players end up doing commentary and/or managing the team... because they know the inner workings better than anyone and have been around through the good and the bad... not only is it smart business, it's a matter of showing respect for those that came before you...
I totally agree with you. The mod status gives notoriety to the person, so people tend to listen to them more. If they don't know what they're talking about, they could induce people in error and make them do stupid things, like intratesticular injections.
