      What is 5-HTP?


      5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the transitional step between tryptophan and the essential brain chemical serotonin.  There is a very large amount of evidence that suggests that low serotonin levels are a common consequence of modern living.  The lifestyle and dietary practices of many people living in the modern world today results in lowered levels of serotonin within the brain.  As a result, many people are overweight, crave sugar and carbohydrates, experience depression, frequent headaches, and experience muscle aches and pain.  All of these symptoms are correctable by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

      What it can do for you!


      Weight Loss:  When there is decreased activity of the enzyme that converts tryptophan to 5-HTP and subsequently to serotonin, studies show that this condition may cause a disruption in the brain’s ability to stop eating until the person has consumed far greater amounts of food than normal usual.


      Migraine:  Some research indicates that 5-HTP may prevent migraines and reduce the frequency and severity of your migraines.


      Depression:  Several clinical trials have found that 5-HTP is as effective as antidepressants.


      Fibromyalgia:  Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by fatigue, widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, and multiple tender points which has been shown to be alleviated with the treatment of 5-HTP.


      Insomnia:  Serotonin is converted into melatonin, a hormone need to regulate sleep-wake cycles.   Because serotonin is considered to increase melatonin levels, 5-HTP may be used as a sleep aid.


      What is the best way to take 5-HTP?


      For depression, weight loss, headaches, and fibromyalgia dosages should start at 50 mg three times per day.  If after 2 weeks the results are minimal, increase the dosage to 100 mg three times per day.  This recommendation will greatly reduce the mild symptoms of nausea often experienced during the first few weeks of 5-HTP therapy. Because 5-HTP does not rely on the same transport vehicle as L-tryptophan, it can also be taken with food.  However, if you are taking 5-HTP for weight loss it should be taken 20 minutes before meals.
