Hunger
My favorite feeling is perhaps the empty hollowness of hunger.
That statement, in itself, is a declaration of the privileged life I’ve led;
it is borderline obscene to boast of such a thing in a world
where 842 million people don’t have enough to eat.
Nevertheless, being lucky enough to have been raised in America
and just competent enough to hold down a job,
I find myself in the enviable position of needing to invoke “discipline”
in order to experience this sensation.
All that aside, I love feeling hungry, both physically and metaphorically.
Physically, being hungry brings something primal out in me;
there is an edge that awakens which feels dormant when I’ve eaten.
I’m sharper, more alive somehow.

When I eat or drink too much, I feel it in my flesh;
I feel the lethargy that comes with food everywhere.
I feel it on my back, I feel it in my limbs, I feel it in my eyes
everything is weighed down and blurred.
When I am overweight,
I find I can go all day without eating and hardly give it a thought.
When I’m training and riding well and my weight is down,
I can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner and never feel sated.
That is the feeling of hunger to which I refer;
not a desire to starve,
but a physical condition where sustenance feels impossible to achieve.
This is a beautiful state where everything feels alive
and there is a sharpness and precision in every motion.

There is also a metaphorical hunger,
which I don’t think we can achieve without the physical sort.
The metaphorical sort is borne of desire and need.
This is what drives us to achieve more than we normally would.
Sean Kelly talks of this hunger in his book by the same name;
in his opening chapter,
he says he would rather fall into the any of the greenhouses below
the sweeping hairpins along the descent from the Poggio into Sanremo
than face defeat by Moreno Argentin.
That is hunger in the metaphorical sense.

I am a better person when I feel hunger;
I have drive, I have humility, I have courage.
When hunger stirs,
we come alive with an urgency we don’t otherwise find.
Without it, there is no compulsion to act, to fight, or to endure

“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.” ~Unknown

We all do it or have done it at some point in our lives: We compare ourselves to others and gauge where we are based on what we observe them to be doing.

If this was simply an observation, that would be one thing. But in comparing ourselves to others, we often end up judging ourselves. There’s no one worse to judge!

If you have ever noticed, it doesn’t matter how many people are on your side, cheering you on. If you can’t get on your own side, you never get past “go.”

The thing about comparison is that there is never a win. How often do we compare ourselves with someone less fortunate than us and consider ourselves blessed? More often, we compare ourselves with someone who we perceive as being, having, or doing more.

And this just leaves us coming up short.

But our minds do want to quantify. Our minds want to rank and file and organize information. Our mind wants to know where we fit into the scheme of things. So we need to give it something to do.

So, instead of training it to stop comparing altogether, why not simply redirect the comparison to a past and a present self and keep the comparison within?

We are always becoming more. Who you are today is a result of the decisions you made yesterday. We are always in a state of creation. We decide and then we decide again, and the direction is always toward expansion. It is our human nature to expand.

So, when you catch yourself comparing yourself to another, stop for a moment and re-direct the thought. Instead of submitting to the temptation to compare yourself to someone else, ask yourself a few questions instead.

What are you doing today that you couldn’t have done five, three, or even one year ago? How have you stepped out in the last year that you might have found inconceivable before?

What new decisions have you made or what new actions have you taken that have resulted in you moving in a new direction in your life?

What are your wins this year, compared to last year at this time? How has your life improved? How haveyou improved? What have you done recently that you never thought you could do?

What negative behavior have you stopped engaging in, that you never thought you could quit? What positive behavior have you been engaging in that up until now, you have resisted?

How are you doing more of what you said you were going to do and shown up more consistently for your own success?

In other words, how have you continued to become a new and improved version of yourself?

That’s the stuff that counts. Comparing ourselves with someone else is an inaccurate and irrelevant measuring stick.

Think about the faulty logic. Take, for example, an introvert who feels energized after periods of solitude. What does she get by comparing herself to a gregarious, outgoing personality who gets bored by an hour alone with herself?

What kind of illogical conclusions can she come to by this comparison?

Take any one of our perpetual comparisons and question the logic. Most are completely irrational in their reasoning.

We all came in different. We all came in with certain intentions that through life experience, we have continued to hone. In fact, the only masterful creation we have to work with is ourselves.

So, why defame it?

Michelangelo said, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

How well we do this is our measurement.

It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing with their block of stone. The statue that they are liberating is one of their own intentions. But how well we are doing with our own block of stone is our business.

And we must tend to it with honor, care, compassion, and praise.

Because when we have allowed for more expression this year than we have in the last, and more importantly we recognize it, than we can stand taller as a result of the comparison instead of diminished by it.

They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

I've always found that anything worth achieving
will always have obstacles in the way
and you've got to have that drive and determination to overcome those obstacles
on route to whatever it is that you want to accomplish.

An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything
and in this lies the great distinction between great men and little men.

you need to figure out what YOU are doing wrong.
What are you attracting into your life and why?
Try looking at the things that are good.
How did you attract them?
What feelings do the good things in your life give you?

Sit in a quiet place and ask yourself these questions
and listen to the answer.
Remember happiness is not the real feeling it is only the end result.
Another words you are happy because you feel …safe, content, healthy.
Those are the types of feelings you are looking for.
Many times if we are not attracting what we want
we are still achieving the feeling we are looking for.
If you are overweight/overfat,
you may have security issues or food is giving you a loving pleasure.
You have to find other more productive ways to get those same feelings
and you will achieve the things you want.

They come back with "It's so little"...
WELL ITS THIS CONSTANTLY GOING DOWN OF THESE LITTLE INCREMENTS THAT ADD UP TO ALOT...

that in 4 months she's down 18 lbs and 16.3% in bodyfat...
and people ask her what is the secret...
"THERE IS NO SECRET, STICK TO THE MEAL PLAN " is her response...

Are you competing for the wrong reasons? There was a time when I felt like winning a bodybuilding contest was the most important thing in my small world! I was angry when I didn’t win, and felt that the training and sacrifice were for nothing! It was all about winning, and my self esteem was demolished if I lost. Even though it was thirty years ago, I remember it like yesterday, hanging up on a dear friend and supporter who didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear after my runner up finish at a regional bodybuilding show.

I was so blinded by my compulsion and need to win; I didn’t want to listen to reason. I like to think that I have matured a lot since those days and that, if anything, age has provided me with some much needed wisdom and insight as to how important competing in a bodybuilding or figure competition should be. Can anything be gained from the experience if you don’t win?

Now don’t get me wrong, it is very hard to justify all the sacrifices in preparation for a competition and just walk on stage with a carefree attitude where winning is not the major goal. Everyone wants to win, but it has to be put in the proper perspective. I have known many individuals who have paid a very high cost emotionally, physically, and financially in their quest to win.

I received an e-mail the other day from a prominent Canadian Bodybuilder who after many years of successful competitions is now questioning if all the sacrifices were worth it? This individual confesses that they loved competing but, in spite of all the wins, still feels unsatisfied and has become frustrated! They are now questioning if continuing to compete will change anything. Unfortunately, after years of training and gearing all your energies towards the goal of winning, to suddenly stop competing can leave a huge void in your life!

So I ask you, what motivates you to compete? Are you competing for the wrong reasons?

Being involved in this industry for the past 30 years, I would like to think I have a bit of insight and a different perspective than many of you reading this. There are some facts that are very clear to me which I would like to share with you.
Atlantic Champion Ron Mayhew competes for all the right reasons

If winning is your main motivation, and you think because you have sacrificed more and worked harder than your peers and that you deserve to win, then you are going to be sadly disappointed. There is no such thing as fair when it comes to a bodybuilding or figure competition. When the lineup hits the stage, the judges are only looking at what is in front of them, not what it took you to get there. Your conditioning, shape, size, and presentation will determine your eventual finish, not the sacrifices you made. Unfortunately, there are those who are simply more genetically gifted than you, and didn’t train or diet as hard, but still won. So if you are looking for justice and feel you deserve to win, I would suggest taking up lawn bowling!

If you do not win, accept it for what it is. Don’t go away raving that you got ripped off and that the judges didn’t know that they were looking at. Try to get some honest feedback, rather than just listening to your friends who will tell you what you want to hear. Regardless of what you might think, CBBF judges are experienced, (some even have international exposure) and are much more qualified than 99% of your friends and supporters.

Should you win a big show, don’t expect sponsors and press to come knocking on your door. The facts are clear, very few people other than family and close friends give a rat’s ass if you win or not! In fact, the average person has no idea what a bodybuilding or figure competition really is. Women bodybuilders will find it even tougher as the general public often looks at them as freaks. Even your friends may show indifference regarding your win by forcing a polite smile. When your back is turned, they will often roll their eyes and question why on earth you would want to look like that.

The point I am trying to make is that bodybuilding is unlike any other sport. It can become a bottomless pit where you can pour in unlimited resources, be it financial, emotional, or physical, with little reward. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that the individuals who have faired the best in competition are the most obsessed, and often never satisfied even if they do win.

Now with Canadian summer competitions quickly creeping up on us, it is time for you to sit down and do some serious thinking. Try to figure out what motivates you to compete. Try and work out your priorities and be realistic as to what to expect from your experience. How will you handle not winning, and why are you putting yourself through so much personal sacrifice for so little return? Is the sacrifice worth the effort?

Following is a summary of what I think motivates people to compete in bodybuilding competitions, and why these won’t provide you with the necessary satisfaction that you hope for. Do you recognize any of these traits in yourself?

Fame: Should you do well in a competition, chances are you might get a bit of press from your local paper. However don’t wait for them to contact you. Go out and lobby for a bit of press as often the local media is unaware of your accomplishments. Other than a few congratulations from friends, family and your local gym buddies, don’t expect much more. As for press and articles in bodybuilding publications, it is very difficult for Canadians to get featured in a Major publication like MuscleMag. However, a new Canadian magazine does feature top Canadian bodybuilding & figure athletes called “Inside Fitness”.

Money & Becoming a Pro: I can’t think of one Canadian bodybuilder & figure athlete other than top Pro Paul Dillet who has actually made any money as a Pro. In spite of his Pro earnings, Paul still had to find an alternate source of income once his pro career ended. Without question, if you choose to compete in contests, it is going to cost you far more money than you will ever get back. If you think that competing with the ambition of becoming a pro is going to earn you a living, then take up golf or ice hockey. On the positive side, your success as a competitor can be translated into earning opportunities in other ways. A national or even regional title can help you in establishing a reputation as a personal trainer, opening up a gym or working for a food supplement company as a salesperson, model or spokesperson. Quebec’s former Canadian Pro Joe Spinello has done well promoting bodybuilding competitions. In my case I became a photographer & author.

Unfortunately, there are those who tarnish the sport supplementing their incomes by selling illegal drugs. Obviously, not a very good career choice and not much of an option for a pension. Although if busted, you might get a couple years of free room and board compliments of the Federal Government.

Insecurity: Perhaps the biggest motivator that started us training in the first place was being skinny and insecure. Once the muscle started to sprout, instead of developing much needed confidence, a lot of the initial insecurity problems just grew along with the muscle. In most cases as a skinny person, no one paid much attention to you. Now all of a sudden people are coming up to you and commenting on your physique. Unfortunately, a lot of guys have a very difficult task handling the sudden attention and begin to feel pressure to back up the compliments. Of course the proving ground is to get on stage and compete. So then winning becomes part of your self esteem and you must win or face humiliation. The loss is a huge blow and only fuels your insecurity to where you must prove yourself at the next show at all costs. So, you take more drugs, train and diet harder to the point of endangering your long term health. I have seen guys who, in spite of sporting 250 pounds of solid muscle, still act like that little insecure 98 lb weakling.

The Thrill and Challenge of Competition: Now this is where the real winners come from. These competitors are true athletes in every sense of the word; they love getting in shape and enjoy the challenge of competition. Yes, they want to win, but it is not the end of the world if they don’t. They enjoy the moment and savor the entire weekend’s activities, often traveling with a spouse or friend and making it a vacation instead of staying locked in their rooms, nervously wrapped up in a blanket they are out socializing and making new friends. These athletes often developed their competitive nature and social skills playing high school sports and have arrived into the bodybuilding & figure world with the proper attitude. Once their trophies are buried deep in a closet and covered with dust, it is the fond memories from the competition that are most cherished. It is this type of attitude that everyone should cultivate, if you are ever to enjoy your competitive years.

So my friends, as you prepare your diet, routine and contest strategy for this summers national competitions, I would suggest you honestly ask yourself why you are doing this. If your answer is anything other than to travel, meet new friends and have fun competing against Canada’s best, then maybe you should take a serious look at how realistic your goals are. My advice to you: ENJOY THE MOMENT!

Let go of Anger and Bitterness
11. Feel it fully. If you stifle your feelings, they may leak out and affect everyone around you—not just the person who inspired your anger. Before you can let go of any emotion, you have to feel it fully.

12. Give yourself a rant window. Let yourself vent for a day before confronting the person who troubled you. This may diffuse the hostility and give you time to plan a rational confrontation.

13. Remind yourself that anger hurts you more than the person who upset you, and visualize it melting away as an act of kindness to yourself.

14. If possible, express your anger to the person who offended you. Communicating how you feel may help you move on. Keep in mind that you can’t control how the offender responds; you can only control how clearly and kindly you express yourself.

15. Take responsibility. Many times when you’re angry, you focus on what someone else did that was wrong, which essentially gives away your power. When you focus on what you could have done better, you often feel empowered and less bitter.

16. Put yourself in the offender’s shoes. We all make mistakes, and odds are you could have easily slipped up just like your husband, father, or friend did. Compassion dissolves anger.

17. Metaphorically throw it away. For example, jog with a backpack full of tennis balls. After you’ve built up a bit of rush, toss the balls one by one, labeling each as a part of your anger. (You’ll need to retrieve these—litter angers the earth!)

18. Use a stress ball, and express your anger physically and vocally when you use it. Make a scrunched up face or grunt. You may feel silly, but this allows you to actually express what you’re feeling inside.

19. Wear a rubber band on your wrist and gently flick it when you start obsessing on angry thoughts. This trains your mind to associate that type of persistent negativity with something unpleasant.

20. Remind yourself these are your only three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it. These acts create happiness; holding onto bitterness never does.

Happy Anniversary to my Wonderful husband Brandon Best....
Brandon sent this to me before we had ever met in person:
" I am completely there for you In all areas of your life
& just love me love me
& know that I will never abandon you or betray you
& will look at you with the same adoration & longing 10 yrs, 20 & beyond"
I typed it out and printed it off and laminated it and to this day over 4 yrs ago
it is still where I taped it on my bathroom mirror and I put the title to it "My Angel"


DAWN & BRANDON OUR STORY:
for those who don't know we were married 4 yrs ago today in Las Vegas on the Sunday of the Olympia Weekend...
we planned & paid for the wedding before we ever met each other in person.
We met not on a dating site, but on a Online Bodybuilding website www.rxmuscle.com owned by my then Coach Dave Palumbo.
Dave started RXMuscle Feb 2009 and gave me my own thread on the Forums.
Brandon had been a Moderator on the Official Muscular Development Magazine forum where Dave was working when I hired him then got fired.
So Brandon along with alot of Dave's loyal followers left MD and came to RX.
Brandon & I struck up a friendship as we would see each others posts, and we would respond both on the forum and private message...
after awhile we both got "Blackberry" cellphones with BBM instant messaging,
so we would message each other throughout the day every day.
Early in 2010 I said "I'm going to the Olympia this year" (I had never been), Brandon said "i'm going to the Olympia this year too"...
more time passes... i said "I booked my flight" Brandon says "I booked my hotel" I ask "Does it have a kitchen?" He said "yes a full kitchen"
so I booked my room there also sharing it with Vicky Lee.
More time passes and that year I competed twice in 2 Canadian National Shows.
Brandon helped me alot and I noticed how he had an effect on me like no one ever had in my life,
I can be quite a livewire and he had an uncanny way of calming me down which i'd never before experienced...
then one day he messages me and asks "would you like to go to this Olympia After Party with me?"

I thought to myself hmmmmmmmnnnn....
more time passes...
one day we are talking and I message him and say "Hell why don't we just get married on Sunday after the Olympia?"
he said "Ok"... so we did...
we met for the 1st time at the Las Vegas Baggage claim on the Thursday

we went straight from the baggage claim, to get the marriage license, to get the Olympia VIP ticket, to the grocery store, to the Hotel..
then Friday & Saturday was all day and night Olympia events, and
Sunday we were married.
His flight was Sunday night, when I took him to the airport for a late flight,
and cried all the way back to the hotel, not long after I arrived there he called said he was on his way back to the hotel,
they had overbooked the flight so he got off and was to fly out Monday instead.
So we had our wedding night together after all...
Monday he went back to Memphis, TN, USA and me back to Canada.
He moved up here to Canada Nov 21st, 2010 and we have been together ever since...
not only has it made our lives better, but also my son Storm's life better...

and THE GUTS TO STEP ON THAT STAGE...
and it was the 2nd person that reaped the GLORY,
whether they won the title, or trophy or not
they were the one who was successful
purely because they didn't give up and overcame the obstacles,
made the sacrifices
and put themselves out there to finish the race & reach their goal...
THIS IS A CHAMPION
in every sense of the word !

look at people who survived real starvation, the Holocaust, concentration camps, Prisoners of War,
back in even in my grandparents days look at how hard day to day life was,
my grandfather was a coal miner his whole life in England, now that is hard work...
REMEMBER ABOVE ALL ELSE DOING A CONTEST IS A CHOICE,
LOOKING A CERTAIN WAY IS A CHOICE,
HOW WELL YOU DO ONSTAGE IS A CHOICE,
IT'S JUST YOU AND YOUR CONSCIENCE UP THERE...

and if you are happy with being normal, or average, or where you are then that is ok too...

THIS MAKES ME THINK OF HOW I FEEL WITH CLIENTS DOING SHOWS SOMETIMES....
"Come to the edge," He said.
They said, "We are afraid."
"Come to the edge," He said.
They came. He pushed them...and they flew."
a great Analogy of this is when...
my son Storm was 5 yrs old one Spring Break we went to the Hill Health Ranch in 108 mile Ranch.
They have a great snow tubing run there.
The 1st time down the hill Storm and I went in the same tube
and a worker came running and yelled "Only 1 person in a tube at once"
So I stood at the top of the hill with the tether rope of Storms tube in my hands,
him in the tube yelling " No NO I don't want to"
My boyfriend at the time was there with me,
and in a blink of an eye I used my foot to push his tube over the edge and down he went SCREAMING, as I watched,
my boyfriend say to me "You Bitch!" ...
when Storm got down to the bottom I don't think the tube even stopped moving,
he jumped out of it, grabbed the tether and RAN to the tow rope to bring him back up the hill,
and all day for hours and hours he repeated this process. HE LOVED IT !
The moral of this story is we are our own worst enemy.
We alot of the time let fear immobilize us.
And I know this feeling only to well.
For many many years I had terrible stage fright,
not that I dont' have any now.
But because I face that fear over and over and walked throught it,
when you get to the other side words cannot describe the self-worth and sense of accomplishment it brings.
Don't let fear stop you from experiencing LIFE TO IT'S FULLEST ! JUST DO IT....

COURAGE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR, BUT THE MASTERY OF FEAR

the opposition they most often get by friends and family...
and it's like a lesson in transference
cuz it's they themselves are the ones being unhealthy
and they project that on ones who are eating clean,
so odd.
Then they think when someone is lean they are unhealthy

As we grow up,
we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let us down,
probably will.
You'll have your heart broken
and you'll break others' hearts.
You'll fight with your best friend
or maybe even fall in love with them,
and you'll cry because time is flying by.
So take too many pictures,
laugh too much,
forgive freely,
and love like you've never been hurt.
Life comes with no guarantees,
no time outs,
no second chances.
you just have to live life to the fullest,
tell someone what they mean to you
and tell someone off,
speak out,
dance in the pouring rain,
hold someone's hand,
comfort a friend,
fall asleep watching the sun come up,
stay up late,
be a flirt,
and smile until your face hurts.
Don't be afraid to take chances
or fall in love and most of all,
live in the moment
because every second you spend angry or upset
is a second of happiness you can never get back.
