I know a lot about computers as it is what I do for a living. Anyways, would you guys be interested in me writing an article for you on how to surf the internet anonymously?

Fire away. More info is always better.
I've done some research on it and it seems at the server level, you can still find out the real IP if the proxy gives it.
If you can tutor me on how to fix that issue, I would be much obliged.

Basically what he said:
http://www.torproject.org/
Basically download tor: http://www.torproject.org/easy-download.html.en
Once you have installed it your windows taskbar and firefox (webbrowser) should have new things on them here is a screenshot:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/6835/screenshotgmx.png
Basically this routes your ip through different ips so that the website you are visiting logs an ip in a different country. You will know it is working if you visit www.google.com and search for something and the results are in different languages. Also, things on TOR are slower due to it routing your packets through a different country. In the bottom right hand corner of your firefox browser be sure it says Tor Enabled. However, if you click that text it will turn to Tor Disabled which will return you to regular internet browsing. If you guys run into problems with this please respond to this thread with your problem I will try to help out.

LOL @ TOR. Many exit nodules are govt. organzations or educational institutes who will and have co-operated. Many are unknown and could be whoever runs them under different names i.e the DEA.
Nothing is encrypted and people have been traced using TOR. It was good for about ...say 3mths. when it first started but as more govt. agencies signed on how can you really trust an exit node that is a dot gov?
Even their own website warns on the limitations:
http://www.torproject.org/download.html.en#Warning
The best true anonmity places are the ones you pay for. Here's a hint: Aryan Nation types know the best ones. As disgusting as it is to surf those sites they know online security.

Well said. But i'll disagree that the best anonmity places are the ones you pay for. The best ones are actually 100% free.. but slightly inconvenient.

This is such a diverse question, I mean there are endless techniques!!
Many of the top techniques in ghost surfing are not disclosed in the open, for obvious reasons...and never will be posted on the forums
I will say one fact:
-No matter what board you surf, ONLY the admin and mods can see your IP reading. If this does not make you feel secure enough...unless the site you browse is an illegal one, then you have nothing to worry or nothing to hide here at CBB.
In order for any organazation to want to track your IP reading and pin you down, there is a lot, in fact too much red tape--in order for the provider to open up info on your location and house address.
If you are good, or at least mediocre, you can bounce your reading from several countries, with a time delay in between, use tunnels, some mirrors...by the time your current location is traced, you are already 5-10 countries ahead..making you virtually untrACEABLE..so much to do, so little time :D
...anyhow what do I know

i majored in network security so if you need to know more just ask.. the easiest option is either that program listed before or you can use your current browser using a proxy server (ends up being the same thing in the end)

OK...diggin up an old one here lol.
So your IP is issued by the service provider? And the Service Provider can match a name and address to your IP? Is this still protected under privacy laws IE has the bill passed where LE doesn't need a warrant? Also, I have noticed that my IP changes from time to time. Whats up with that?
I know, stupid questions but I need this cleared up. Thanks to anyone who can answer.

Lot's of ways to anonymize yourself. Tor has 2 major weaknesses and is good for basic web surfing but nothing more.
Lot's of guys will think getting an open wireless connection to be the solution. Problem with this is those connections are limited. Most of you do not work in this field and do not understand all the ways you can be traced. Your worst nightmare will be a hacked dns. It can be done on a router directly. It can be done at the ISP level and it can be done at a nameserver level of the country. IP spoofing can help but everything is just a matter of time.
I will stick to my original advice. Do not do anything illegal online. You may get away with it a few times, but eventually it will catch up to you. Remember that NOTHING gets deleted online. Not in 2 weeks and not in 5 years.
If you just want to surf anonymously and check websites without your ip being displayed, use tor or paid 100% anonymizers or vpn's with anonymizers too. Don't rely on free proxies as a lot of them will display your real ip if you insert a piece of code on the server. Tor will anonymize you well for just surfing but there is another way you can be found with tor if given enough time.
rob66679, the answer to your question is because isp's rarely give out static ip's. Most ip's are leased for a specific amount of time and renewed to a new one after the time limit expires (search DHCP to learn more). Only certain isp's give static ip's. Say for example one comes to this forum with an ip that I know the isp leases the ip and makes a post. The ip will get logged. 2 years later if the person is still making posts with the same ip, then I know they are probably spoofing the ip or doing something else to keep that ip instead of it getting renewed. I believe most isp's will lease an ip for about a month then automatically renew it to another. You can get an isp to give you a static ip (usually costs $4-$10/month). This is usually used to increase your speed just a little, which is pointless for that price or if you run a webserver without a free dns redirector.
And last thing for rob, isp's have already began playing ball without warrants. I made a post about it. It is confirmed true. It is not law yet though.
Lastly for a wireless router, a wep encryption can be hacked in about 3 minutes. WPA-PSK is much better. And it's only a matter of time before new security holes appear and different ways to get at you happen. So stay safe and sleep well at night by not doing anything illegal online.

Thanks MP, much appreciated.
Thats pretty ****ed up that Service Providers are playing ball with anyone, LE or not, by releasing names or addresses to match IP's.
Seems like a massive invasion of privacy IMHO.

I'm thinking about going back to
FTA satellite. The only ones that are
up use IKS (key sharing over the internet).
There's lots of talk about what the level of
risk is to end users, regarding the likelyhood
that the government/cable companies will
subpoena IP addys using keysharing servers, etc.
Thoughts ?
Anyone running an FTA IKS setup ?
What privacy precautions do you take ?
(if i'm hijacking this thread I'll move this to a new post)
