Hey guys,

Been suffering an injured rotator cuff in my left shoulder for months now. Because of this injury I am having a hard time getting my chest and shoulder strength to increase. My biceps and triceps and legs are increasing like weeds but anything that puts strain on my shoulder is really slowing me down.

I'm currently on Prop/Tren but can you recommend anything that will help with this injury? Is physio therapy my only option? My personal trainer wants me to focus on cable raises etc to work on the shoulder. He recommends light weights high reps. I'd like to hear your opinions on this as well?

go see a RMT best decision i ever made. its gonna hurt like hell the first few times, but i guarantee you'll see SIGNIFICANT improvement by your 4th visit...

i recently dislocated my shoulder, RMT said i had shitload of scar tissue from previos injury that didnt heal properly and thats why it happened...

also, ICE the shoulder after every workout... significant reduction in pain i notice

EDIT:
you'll have to work on strenghtening the rotator cuff muscle.... forget the cables your PT is talking about. pick up a 5lbs DB (NO MORE, need very little weight for rotator cuff, otherwise other muscles start engaging)....go to top range of motion as if doing a side lateral raise, and then use the ROTATOR CUFF to move your forarm from horizontal to vertical UP, for 5-10 reps, then horizontal to vertical DOWN

heres a pic

if you can get more than 8-10 reps in, youre doing it WRONG.
if you hear lots of POPs and SNAPS and CRACKLES, youre doing it RIGHT.

its very important to rotate from the shoulder... it will take a few times to get used to esp with all the noise the joint is going to be making

screw the shoulder strength, I want one of those mustaches!!! For real tho, thats good advice, get the scar tissue worked on by an RMT and you will see improvement.

Thanks for the advice guys. There is an RMT right beside the tanning salon I go to. I'll be sure to go talk to them tomorrow. My shoulders are full of scare tissue. Its a workout just getting a needle in there... lol

In addition to the above advice, check out the following video. I'm a long time sufferer of right shoulder problem, so I feel your pain. It sucks.

Following the advice above + the exercises below has made all the difference for me.

Good post Boulderer. I plan on following it as all my other treatments (including seeing an RMT) have failed. I've given up on Bench, even Smith machine bench which seemed a little easier on the joint, and any shoulder work other than shrugs. I'm a little worried about Arthritis though.

Some good advice here.. much appreciated.. been having major problems with my left shoulder (as well somewhat with my right) for months now as well...

Anyone have disrupted sleep from their shoulder problems? I'm waking up constantly throughout the night with one or the other shoulder burning and the arm tingling.. I wake up, shake my arm to wake it up and switch sides to sleep on. Very frustrating.

Is it an acute or chronic injury?

wish I could. Every night I wake up 5-6 times with numbing in my hands and arms due to sleeping on my sides (shoulders). Not good :(

I agree 100% with sleeping on your back. I injured myself in a bench press contest 17months

ago. It's 90% better but my strengh is nowhere near what it was. From the

injury I learned to sleep on my back and now I have the best sleeps ever and

never wake up with sore shoulders.

Hi Guys,

I am not sure what your injuries exactly look like, but I seperated my shoulder a few months ago and use Prolotheraphy, It is supposed to strenghten, increase the healing in tendons ligaments etc.

I went to a naturopath which is stuff I don't believe ...

Anyways, 9 weeks after having my shoulder sepearted I am beching 85% of what I used too...recovered way faster then my friend ( same injury) , My physio( useless bitch but hot) was stunned by my recovery ... so yeah, just google it, might work

I've been suffering from similar injuries on both my shoulders. I ended up with calcific tendonitis. A certified ART practician could help a lot, but will not cure you. What I did was visit my orthopedist. I removed the calcium and got cortisone shots. I was almost perfect the next day. Within a couple of weeks and proper training my sholders were at 100%. Cood luck man!

I only have pain in the morning if I've slept with my right arm above my head (under the pillow). This used to be a constant problem.

It sounds strange, but I slowly trained myself to wake up if I put my right arm under the pillow. I would go to sleep with the mindset that I was going to wake up if my right arm went under the pillow...it sounds like hocus pocus, but it worked for me. At first this was a major bitch, as I was waking up constantly at night. However, it seems to have worked as I find that I'm more often keeping my arms by my side as I sleep, rather than overhead. Occasionaly I will find myself waking up in the morning with my right arm under the pillow and it hurts like hell for the morning. It does happen alot less frequently know though....

Give it a shot..

Doesn't sound strange at all.. this is why I've been waking up constantly.. problem is, I can't seem to stop sleeping on my shoulders. I've tried sleeping on my back as well, just can't get used to it.

I've always had problems sleeping anyway, but this just makes it worse.

I'm gonna try that broomstick exercise, along with the light DB one too.

I tore my rotator cuff at a wrestling comp, Painful injury that takes a long time to heal, and once its healed take awhile to regain confidence in it (scared to re-injure during workout). Acupuncture worked well to ease the pain.

RMT is fine but you need to really diagnose the probem accurately first. Most RMT's are not very skilled at this...usually an RMT is used once the diagnosis is complete and a recovery plan has been created. I would suggest a good chiro who works primarily with athletes and sports injuries and is well skilled in ART. Once you do this you are in a better positon for treatmemt. Is there any structural damage? tears? Is is primarily inflammation? what is the root cause? is it chronic or accute? I see your avatar says Toronto...I would suggest Dr Joe Kottoor (works with the Raptors) or Dr Ken Kinakin (BB powerlfiter, MMA sports chiro) Just google either...Joe is on Bayview just south of Eglinton and Ken is in Mississauga...Joe will have you recovering in 3 visits or less. at 41 years old these guys have extended my BB career many times over.

Ive been dealing with shoulder issues for the past 3 mos. 2 ultrasounds an MRI and next week Im getting an MRA.

You need to get it imaged and find out exactly what is going on with it, if its not that bad you can rehab it as I did with my supraspinatus. Took 10 weeks to heal a 5mm tear.

After that I was still having pain and the MRI revealed possible labrum damage (hence the MRA coming up). If its minor damage I wont need surgery more than likely if not then I will be seeing a surgeon.

The point is your dr or physio can make educated "guess" on a diagnosis but you wont know where your at for sure as far as rehab or surgery being required until you get it scanned.

I wish I had done that sooner rather than later.

I've been dealing with shoulder issues all my adult life (pitcher growing up). Finally decided to get it looked at this offseason (baseball/golf). Well...I've been going through the process (XRay/Ultrasound/MRI/Physio) for the last 5 months, and finally had my specialist appointment today. In those 5 months, I've started to get back into the gym after a layoff for a couple of years. I feel like this has helped more than the physio itself (had laser and ultrasound therapy along with some rotator exercises which I continue to do).

The specialist said not to ever do overhead weight bearing exercises, such as shoulder presses...??? I feel like this is one exercise that not only is irreplaceable, but has also helped my injury immensely over the last few months (supraspinatus - like force mentioned above). Wanted to get some opinions of board bros here...I didn't get a good feeling from him - he seemed more interested in getting my cash for a cortisone shot which I don't particularly like...

Cheers!
