When a fighter clears out a division like Anderson Silva has, or Georges St. Pierre could if he defeats Thiago Alves, bigger challenges await and the talk of super fights begin.

Anderson Silva has defended his Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title five times and has gone up to the light heavyweight division and knocked out UFC veteran James Irvin.

Georges St. Pierre has beaten the who's who of the welterweight division since making his Octagon debut at UFC 46, five years ago on Jan. 31, 2004.

Both fighters are widely considered the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and St. Pierre welcomes the opportunity to fight Anderson Silva.

"Of course it would be something very interesting for me," said the UFC welterweight titleholder. "If the timing is right and everything goes according to plan, and it's something the UFC would do, it's something that may be for the future interesting.

"To tell the truth, the primary reason I do this sport, it's not for the fame. It's not for the money because when I started I was a nobody and I didn't have money. I do it for myself. I like the challenge," added the French-Canadian. "I like the satisfaction of what a victory gives. And it's very important to me that I always find new challenges for a personal accomplishment."

Before St. Pierre can seriously entertain the thought of actually fighting Anderson Silva, he and Anderson have to get past their next opponents. Silva is scheduled to fight Thales Leites on April 18 at the Bell Center in Montreal, Canada, and St. Pierre is expected to defend his belt against Thiago Alves with a date and venue yet to be determined.

"It depends on the outcome of my fight, of his fight," said St. Pierre. "I'm a very proud champion. I always look for the best challenge, and right now I think the next in line is Thiago Alves. He's the best guy right now. And I'm glad to fight him."

At the end of the day, a super fight between St. Pierre and Silva is in the hands of the UFC.

"It's up to the UFC," stated the 27-year-old fighter. "And one day, if I have to do it, it would be something that I have to plan correctly. And I'd have to put some extra time in my training because I'm going to have to gain some weight. I'm going to do it in a good way."

It would be very interesting to see but I don't see it happening. If GSP would fight him and win, he'd be ranked as one of the top MMA fighter's of all time.

Last night on Inside MMA, Anderson's manager said he could see that fight absolutely happening if GSP had a dominating victory over Thiago in their next fight, giving GSP a really credible run of title defences to warrant the Silva/GSP battle.

I don't think GSP will have much trouble beating Thiago, considering that Fitch beat Thiago badly and GSP demolished Fitch. It will be a good fight as Thiago is very good in Muay Thai and has the BJJ background.
But of course GSP will have his game plan

Anderson Silva is too big for GSP, imo.

One pay-per-view star fell on Saturday night, and UFC president Dana White made it so.

Chuck Liddell was, and is, money in the bank as the economy teeters and ticket prices are stagnant or moving downward.

But White insists it’s not about the money, regardless of what he could get from his friend. We’ve yet to hear from Liddell, but he’ll likely avoid an ocean of legal paperwork and take a non-fight job with the promotion.

That leaves a select few to pick up the slack as the guard continues to change in the promotion’s talent roster.

Anderson Silva was never considered a strong pay-per-view draw, and may never be one after his performances against Patrick Cote and Thales Leites.

Canadians, as well as others, put up $4.9 million for UFC 97, making it one of the top four gates in the promotion’s history. UFC 83, which featured GSP’s rematch with Matt Serra, grossed $5.1 million, number two to UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz 2 at $5.3 million.

It’s a little bit of flattery, but with those numbers, White calling Canada the “Mecca of MMA” isn’t that far off.

Put Silva against Georges St. Pierre in Canada – particularly Toronto, where White’s been assured that 60,000 seats is not crazy – that’s a gatebuster.

By their reactions Saturday night, it’s clear who will be the hero and who will be the heel.

“Maybe we could do that,” White pondered last Thursday. “I’d like to do it. We’ll see what happens.”

Silva's schedule is now free. St. Pierre, however, has a roadblock in his way, and White says it's a big one.

“Let’s see what happens with Thiago Alves,” he told reporters post-UFC 97. “I’m telling you guys, I think this is a huge, huge fight for Georges St. Pierre’s career. If he gets by Thiago Alves, I don’t know who at 170 beats him. Then you start looking for other ways for him to challenge himself.

“Is it taking on Anderson at 185 pounds? This kid gets by Thiago Alves the way he’s been getting through other people, I’ll throw him in there in the mix for the pound-for-pound. Right now, I got him at number two.”

St. Pierre entertained the idea of a coach spot against Silva at a Q & A session for UFC Fight Club members last Friday. He was cautiously optimistic.

"I would have to sit down and see what the opportunity is," he said. "How long I have for the fight. Because if I fight at 185, if I do it, I want to do it well. I want to put some extra muscle on me, some extra weight. I would have to go on a I would have to go on a diet for a couple extra weeks, and it would take me some extra time, but I'm always excited for a new challenge."

In an interview with MMAWeekly.com last October, St. Pierre was a little bolder.

“I’m not afraid of challenging nobody at 185, I’m very confident in myself,” he said of the superfight. “I think I can do pretty well. I think I’m a different fighter than all the guys who have fought him in the past. There’s only one way to find out.”

Like St. Pierre said then, the stars have to be in alignment for his second superfight in less than a year. He can be sure where Silva stands.

“That problem I’m sure is going to get dealt with a little bit later,” Silva said Thursday.

But it’s just the kind of match-up that will solidify new stars – and rescue old ones.

I agree 100%. People see GSP's pwerty muscles and don't realize the size difference between the two is at least 20-25 pounds (walk around weight).

That is exactly why I (and many others) have said in the past, and GSP said in the above interview, that if this is going to happen he will need to take the time to put on quality weight so that there is not such a big difference in size.

To say GSP does not have the tools to put away Anderson is crazy. Will he? That remains to be seen.

IF GSP does it the right way this fight could go either way. If GSP gains the weight too quickly and does not get his cardio up and used to the extra weight than silva takes it IMO.

When not training for a fight GSP walks around over 200 # for sure there would not be that much of a size strength advantage if any at all all anderson has on Georges is reach.

you are absolutely correct brother, GSP even after weigh in gains considerable weight, Silva sits comfy at his weight and doesn't work hard to cut, these two are not far off in comparison, just that Silva has that reach, but GSP has the wrestling!!

i'll take silva. gsp would have no problem with making weight. at the weigh ins he's at 170 but by fight time he's at least 185. did you see the size difference between him and penn. no way do they weight the same.

this would be the best match up in a long time, GSP would win in my opinion. He would use his wrestling and he has all the other tools as well.

i think gsp is one of the best fighters but is too chicken to move up. penn is a little bitch but at least he tried. silva does fight at 205 and will fight forrest, one of the top 5

silva walks around at 215-220 as per Dana white's interview on The Ellis Show, I think he is more focused on getting Silva into the light heavy fights to square off against Machida.

That being said St pierr walks around 195-200 so at 185 I think george would have a real good chance.

I dont want to see GSP fight Silva. Im a big GSP fan, but I doubt he could beat Silva. He would need a solid block of time to get up over 200lbs then cut down and condition himself to be a fast, agile 185. Even if he can do that when he weighs in at 185 I dont see him jumping up 15lbs for the fight like he did with Penn, where as it would be much easier for Silva to come in closer to 200lbs. Lets just say for arguments sake that GSP could put on some weight in time for the fight, he would be alot slower at 195-200 then he would at 180-185. GSP absolutely dominates his weight class, but I dont see him dominatings Silvas.
