I recently switched up to using DB's for a incline bench press and ive been working with 90lbs as a starting weight. Last night I decided to go up to 95 and see how many I can belt out.. This guy I know was at my guym so I asked him for a spot. It was supposed to be my 2nd work set (the first one was 10x90lbs), so I get in my zone get pumped up whatever, pick up the DB's rest them on my knees and sit down. Not paying attention to his positioning, I pop up my legs and lean back fast.. The guy was leaning so far forward I smoked my head on his collarbone and I didn’t get enough pop on the weights so now im struggling with 95 in each hand its resting on my chest/shoulders.. The dude is like trying to push up my arm.. After aobut 5 secs im like **** this so I just dropped them, super embarrasing :(

I appreciate it anytime someone gives me a spot but..**** that could have been pretty dangerous for me and him if I'd smoked him in the nose with the back of my head and then dropped the weights on his feet or something.

Any stories you guys have?

I dont bother anymore unless I am on flat bench with bar.
I work out alone, turn on my ipod, watch the fiasco around me, and let er rip.

With dumb bells, I used to kick them up, but have recently begun to swing them up. Seems to be good so far, but I am not lifting heavy due to shoulder discomfort, so I am not sure how well that works into the hundreds. Last night I swung up 80's on shoulder press no prob. In a few weeks I will try 100-110's to see how they swing LOL

same here. I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've had a spot in the last 5 years.

I don't progress up in weight until I can do 10-12 reps of a weight first. Using this strategy I can make gains without requiring a spotter to keep going heavy.

dumbbells you dont really need a spotter, unless you're trying to smash a plateau or something i think. worst case scenario you just drop em if shit is about to go wrong

then there is always the retard spotter too who wants to do all the work for you and you completely waste your set because hes a CHAMP at spotting. i also work out with music and talk to nobody for this reason. i usually ignore people that try to talk to me as well by pointing at my headphones and not listening to them at all. it works well, i dont have to spot anyone else ever lol

I`m pretty much the same. Can`t remember the last time I spotted someone, and never allow myself to make eye contact with others so I don`t end up spoting them. If I saw some guy doing something I thought needed a spot and is not walking around like some arrogant asshole, I`d help him out for sure.

Especially when I was at pro gym way too many fags there just wanting to be close to your crotch while you spott them on the bench! I just train, listen to my music and leave. Even people who know me, pretty much know not to talk to me during training, and I`ve dumped a parter because he wouldn`t shut the **** up. I sometimes feel like a prick for being that way, and for having people see me a certain way that I`m not in the gym (cold...) but it`s not tea time and I just can`t focus shooting the shit between sets then going back to being serious. I`ve always wanted to ask some chick doing the abducter machine if she needs a spot, that would funny.

i used to work out with this girl, whos actually semi famous right now as a country singer here in canada, anyway, shes a pretty good looking girl and she used to make hot noises when she would lift weights, her breathing sounded like sex breathing.....moral of my story is if you're gonna spot someone, spot a hot blonde country singer

I don't mind giving someone the occasional spot if they ask.

I don't mind spotting people but if I need a spot I always explain how I like it done. Whether or not to help start it out of the hole and don't touch unless I stop moving.

I hate it when guys hold on to the bar the whole time.

I hate when the cock sucker thinks you need help locking out.

Couple of weeks ago there were these 2 kids benching. One has the bar laying on his chest and is almost begging for help while his "friend" is laughing at him making him beg more...

Only my gym boyz spot me or my hubby. My best ones are the 20-25 yr old guys. I don't trust anyone else that is just a random member.

Tonight...one of our big regular guys is asked to spot a new guy who looks big too. Shoulder press with 100 lb dbs. OMG. He should have been sitting on an incline bench because his back was arched so bad. He got one rep..soon after our regular Big guy was doing all the work. 4 reps..joke.

I always look too see if anyone knows how too lift before I ask for a spot..
...I don't feel like I am pushing hard enough some times with out a good spot...sometimes you get dudes that lift too soon for ya or put too much lift in your spot , thats why I look too see if they know how to lift first...

whenever i spot guys, i can tell they (for the most part) are not happy, as i make them work it out. I am not lifting it for them. I will help them out of stick, but if I have to take the weight, i end the lift and rack the bar. **** them

skinny guy lifting 225 after one rep that I pretty much lifted for him = "One more!"
waderow - [racks bar and walks away]

too many guys use spotters as vanity accessories to make them look stronger. its a****ing joke

Waderow for the win!

Anyone ever notice that massive PLers never do forced reps, negatives, or any other shit from FLEX magazine?

In my gym I tell you how you're going to be spotted and I usually throw in a little "If you get stuck only half way through how many you told me you were going for and expect me to do the rest for you, rethink it cuz I'll just leave you under the bar to think about how silly you are for a bit if that happens" and things usually work themselves out at that point. ;)

LOL, I've thought about doing that so many times. I'd only ever mess with someone if I knew them and the weight wasn't too heavy. Although I try to only help enough on the last one so they don't try for another. More than a couple times a guy has said something like "I'm going for 8-10" and all I'm thinking in my head is man if you do 4 good reps I'll be amazed.

I use spotters mostly for chest/shoulder exercises. Dumbells are a pain to get up for the 2nd and 3rd rest pause sets. Although I only ask people who work at the gym and know how I lift and what I want them to do. Random people would make me nervous to use as spotters.
