I must say, this can either be a great idea or a very discriminating one!

This is a article called " Overweight student's Won't graduate"

JEFFERSON CITY, MI - Lincoln University, a historically black college, has recently instituted a requirement that students with a BMI over 30 must take a physical education class in order to receive their diplomas.

The program "Fitness for Life" began in 2006, but this is the first year the effects will be felt. This spring, the new requirement will keep over two dozen students - who did not register or dropped out of the course - from graduating.

The new rule has has not been received well by the student body who don't believe the university should play a role in students' nutritional and physical education.''

Sure,BMI is a shitty screening tool but hopefully, they will be able to tell buff from fat!

Interesting idea. However I don't think they should go by BMI. They should go by body fat percentage.

it wont work, because the courts will side with FAT HUMAN RIGHTS over men who try to take action to keep the fatties out of the KFC line up

Haha ya. The BMI is a terrible judge of a person's health. I'm stronger and more intelligent than all those skinny kines majors who have no friggen idea what's going on. "I took a nutrition class so I'm going to tell you what is healthy" or "I took a kines class so I know how to lift weights properly and if you don't do it the way I learned in the book, then it's wrong". I've learned more from Saner and ShortDave than any of these clowns at the U of C can dream of.

K, That was a bit of a rant but whatever lol.

Bad idea, kids will start starving themselves. Perhaps even get suicidal if they just miss the cut off. Or perhaps some kid might have health issues, like thyroid or depression and dont want to tell the school about the issue. I know a chick i went to high school with had thyroid issues and she gain about 50lbs in about 3 months.

The other thing is some families just cannot afford healthy foods.

Hold on now...were talking about university, young adults here so i doubt they will take such drastic measures.

BMI might be a shitty scale but, think of the mark you would get on the bell curve in phys-ed class full of fatties. Easy A++.

BMI always reminds me of Arnold's story about getting into trouble in the military for being over weight.

When I was looking into doing my master's degree. I looked into this engineering university over in the middle east. Two requirements that I found bizarre were that you be a male and that you were physically fit.

So stupid everyone with a BMI has to take Phed ed. Everyone should have to take Phed not jsut a high BMI. A lower BMI does not mean ur healthy or know anything about health. I am quite sure I am in better shape with a BMI over 30 then most High school kids who have BMI's under 25. BMI is the worst measurement ever invented.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks BMI is stupid. Those phys ed classes will be full of fat kids and buff kids, with nobody in between. Stupid idea, even if it's a college.

100% agree. I've seen at least 1 documented case, and I could point out a few people that aren't "overweight" by BMI standards, but are definitely overfat.

In the case I'm referring to, a university aged female calculated her BMI to be 18.5, but when skinfolds were measured and a physical activity questionnaire were done she ended up admitting her only activity was walking from her house-->car, car-->class, and then the reverse on her way home, and was measured about 30% bodyfat with essentially 0 muscle mass. If she doesn't need PE class, I don't know WHO does.

And FYI, BMI was developed by insurance companies as an easy way to classify the level of risk that a client presented so they could adjust their premiums accordingly.

This seems like a good idea. When I was in university in computer science there were so many foriegn student that had trouble writting english the required all students in engineering to complete 1 english course. Many, many failed.
The university should not look at BMI just have a fitness test for everyone.

they should do this at an earlier age, maybe not measure BMI but have some sort of a fitness test. there should be some things that every student should learn to do as they go to adult life, like take care of their finances, swim, walk up the stairs wihtout running out of breath.

ya, maybe for bodybuilders...but what fraction of the planet is the BMI NOT a good tool for measuring general overweightedness? I'd have to disagree with BMI being useless. Besides, anyone that the BMI is useless for is probably not worried about a BMI being over 30.

What is a better measurment that anyone with a half a brain can determine? Most people don't think their fat, when in fact they actually are. People think 'well, I am better than the average - so I must be good'. Well, average is fat.

I think anyone with a BMI over 30 should have to take some sort of course, whether its nutrition, phed, or whatever...And its not really discriminating, because most people over BMI of 30, who the scale doesn't qualify for, would actually want to take the phed course. But yeah...its still a bit dumb - everyone should need to take PHEd as greg said. fat, small, anorexic, skinny, whtever...because while BMI is a decent measure, there are still a million kids/teens under a BMI of 30 who are anything but healthy.

Anyway, my point is, BMI is just a tool, a marker...no one uses it to say you are unhealthy, and you are. same thing with other biomarkers, blood tests, etc...its just another type of diagnostic test.
