I was just listening to an old episode of superhuman radio and Dan John was the guest. He gave a trick to see if you`re overtrained that I find has a lot of logic to it.

He says to take a pencil and in 10 seconds make as many dots you can on the sheet of paper. When your totals are 10% less than your regular number of dots, your cns needs a break. He said the hands besides your testicles have the most amount of nerves and require many motor units to have them function properly ( If I understand that part correctly...) And when you`re overtrained they won`t function as efficiently as they should.

Another trick is to analyze your typing skills. If you notice you can`t type as fast as you normally do or tend to make many mistakes, it`s another indicator.

For me personally I just know. Little things annoye me, anything associated to lifting I find is a task and don`t feel like doing. I think about these things a few hours before doing them and keep thinking what a pain it is to do all of them... Stuff like getting my shakes ready, eating my meals on time or leaving the house at my specific time to start training at the given time...

He didn`t state the time of the day to perform this test so I wonder if it`s best to do so when waking up or some other time. Just thought it was a cool tip I wanted to share here and think you guys would like the episodes at superhumanradio.com. You should check it out.

try to take a couple breaks on every cycle. sometimes a week off will really help. I have taken two week breaks before while on cycle, and came back strong

For sure, I usually take a break every 8 weeks or so. Even when I was on this summer in the 20 week cycle I had to take 3 breaks. That FST 7 training overtrained me to shits, after 2 weeks of doing that for certain body parts, I was shut down...

Go pick up guitar hero or rockband, if your drum/guitar skills are lacking.... you're overtraining CNS :)

99.9% of people who think they are "overtrained" are just tired tbh. That pencil trick is cool (I heard him mention it a long time ago) but there are so many ****ing factors that its just a waste of time to think of.

over training CNS is fairly hard to do for your average lifter...

The heart rate test really works!

Insomnia is a is a big indication for me.

There are differing levels of overtraining, and everyones tolerance levels are different, I think there is'nt an accurate gauge to measure this but taking breaks periodically certainly wouldnt hurt, I think on average it takes up to two weeks off of training before you will see a significant detraining effect. I can remember when I first learned of overtraining, it was within the first 2 months of training. Right after training, I would get violent tremors throughout my body, usually before i even left the gym I would have cold chills, and I felt like I would pass out, I would fall asleep like a rock as if I hadnt slept in 4 days than 2 hours later I would wake up suddenly, wide awake like I hadnt even gone to sleep. getting through the day was difficult to say the least.
