Hi ladies,
my wife has had her 5th child in 5 years about 8 months ago. Two are ours and 3 are surrogates. The last one was twins and took its toll on her. She's since been working out hard, eating well but can't drop any weight. She is 34 5'7 and 160#. She has a bodypump fitness class she attends 3 times a week and before hand she does cardio and tries to work her thighs and butt more since she feels those are her worst areas.
When we do go to the gym together, I can see she is getting much stronger yet the bodyfat is still high. Would this be a diet issue or training issue?
Would you have any opinions or advice I can give her?
I don't know her exact macros for nutrition but I'll go through them with her and could fill you in with more details.
thanks,
ubcpower

I'd say diet as well...
Don't forget... takes 9 months to gain the weight.. will take at least that long to take it off!! (more for twins IMO) Feline cougar would know more on this topic as she deals with pregnancy for a living)
plus 5 kids in 5 years can wreak havoc on ANYONE's figure!!
advice... tell her she's beautiful and getting stronger and it's about how she feels right now, not what the scale says!!

do you ladies measure your portion sizes?
would you have a sample diet that works for you?
my wife for example uses
4 to 5 egg whites with a bowl of puffed wheat sugar free cereal
fruits for a break at work, either banana or grapes
turkey breast or ham sandwich with a salad with turkey breast and 2 boiled eggs(no yolk)
after work she works out and then has a banana with a protein shake(93%)
supper she has dark veggies with rice with ham, chicken or turkey. (we cook a lot of turkey)
for a late night snack she has rice cakes with frozen fruits and a tea.
the exact macros we're not sure since these portions are not weighed out. should all portions be weighed out to get a feel for quantities?
thanks again,

get her to try this for a few months...gauranteed the lbs will drop off...also add in some cardio and weight sessions throughout the week...all the meals are interchangeable so if she likes turkey, eggs or shakes she can double up on those meals
For a 130lb+ Female
MEAL #1
2 whole (OMEGA-3) Eggs with 6 egg whites
MEAL #2
35g Whey protein Isolate with 1 tablespoon all natural peanut butter
MEAL #3
6oz chicken (ostrich, or turkey) with 1/4-cup (1oz) cashew nuts, or almonds, or walnuts (vary it)
MEAL #4
5oz salmon, swordfish, or RED MEAT with a green salad (no tomatoes, red peppers, or carrots) with 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil or Mac Nut Oil and vinegar
MEAL #5
35g Whey Protein Isolate with 1 tablespoon all natural peanut butter or 2 whole (OMEGA-3) EGGS with 6 whites
**** You should have a cheat meal once per week (in place of meal #5).

just an update, my wife is down 4 pounds on the diet already. her stomach is showing more definition and so are her legs. she feels much better already about herself even though she's just beginning. how long would you keep a diet like this going for?
thanks for the help

I thought I answered this one briefly? Odd..
Yes I measure every portion accept some veggies. Rice, potato meat for sure.
Not only do i measure but I calculate every calorie. If I top my morning oats with ED Smith No Sugar Jam I add it into the daily calories eaten.

How long would she diet like that for? I had one diet that was 5 months long..to long. Never again.
The best time I think for myself is a 3 month one. Some people, depending on how much they need to loose can do it for as long as a year.
The better she looks the more motivating it will be for her.
Your wife had 5 in 5 yrs..she is my hero.

it'll take time like what someone else mentioned. keep her positive tell she's improving.
no fruits man period. veggies are better. good carbs potato, salads, lean meats. good cardio and some weights so the right fats get burned. takes time my sister was really depressed after she lost her figure after 2 kids. she looks the best she has in 2 years. clean diet and honest workouts. keep her positive compliment her..
keep it up
Why no fruits? I am curious to learn your thoughts on this.

I personally finds fruits are no value in my diet. Often sugary (natural sugars) and not very complex carbs. Ok for preworkout but not something to live on in a diet. I agree if you switch your fruits for veggies your diet will be much healthier. Fruit is good and is not going to make you gain a tonne of weight but it doesnt have many postitives compared to a veggie like broccoli, asparagus, most green veggies.

still important to supplement with something like Juice+ though if youre going to eliminate them from the diet

Just an update and maybe some more help for my wife. She is down to 144# but since the strike started for me, she hasn't gone to the gym quite as much but progress is still there.
She feels good, waist sizes are shrinking and looking good, but now she's looking to target specific areas, and that's where I'm completely lost. She is annoyed with the fat on her lower glutes and her hips or "saddlebags". Her upper glutes are virtually fat free but the bottom end she is concerned with.
What exercises would you recommend for lower glutes and hips?
thanks again for all your help, she is grateful.

Localized fat burn only happens if the person has a hormonal imbalance corrected.
Squats and lunges are the best thing for lower body.
Puffed cereal is a neurotoxic.

Congrats on her results so far! Yes unfortunately you can't target a certain area for fat loss. Fat will come off in the reverse order it was put on.
I think getting her back on a routine of daily cardio and a tight diet will give her the continued results she seeks, moreso than adding any new exercises.
All the best

The diet UBC posted is DP's keto diet...it will work well for her....she can run this diet for 16 weeks if she likes. She will also need to do some cardio i would suggest starting at 40 minutes every day and working up from there...just a quick walk on the treadmill is fine. After a few weeks if her weight stops dropping you will have to change up the diet slightly(remove fat sources) and have a pro/veg day or two then go back to the pro/fat day and repeat.
Just an FYI..her current diet contains way too many carbs....especially fruit anf for heavens sake get rid of the rice cakes thats like eating pure glucose.
Once she is finished dieting she will need a maintenance diet and will have to reintroduce specific carbs slowly as well.

Why no fruits? I am curious to learn your thoughts on this.
Fruit is comprised mainly of fructose...which cannot be used to fill muscle glycogen stores and is converted very readily by the liver into triglycerides (fat).
Yes it does have phytonutrients and vitamis etc but it is basically sugar and should be saved for offseason eating.

Here's her update, we have a trainer now and he's a retired BB'er and won the Ontario comps a few years back from what I gather. He put the both of us on a DP diet. She's now down to 135# and he said the same as P said, lose the fruit and rice cakes. As a matter of fact, she put on her high school grad dress on last night....and it's a little loose!
She's pretty happy so far but wants to get into better shape.
thanks guys and girls!

LOL! WIN!
On topic, nice work on the DP diet thus far. Don't forget to constantly let her know that the mirror speaks a lot louder than the scale does. There's nothing more frustrating than gaining/losing weight when you're doing the opposite and forgetting to check out how things are going with measurements, pictures, and the mirror!
