Default Be a screw up, you'll probably get ahead in life

This thread is about people being stupid, lazy, incompetent and me bitching about work all in one. I honestly believe you get ahead more as a fck up than someone who actually works hard and has common sense.

I work with some guys, and it honestly boggles my mind how they got to where they are, and why the don't get fired. If they lived in any other country, they would have starved to death long ago from laziness, stupidity and incompetence.

I work in a welding fabrication shop, every single weld is tested with either X-ray, magnaflux, or helium. If a weld fails, it has to be repaired until its fixed. I've been doing this job for 4 years, i haven't had an x-ray fail in 3 years and 11 months. Guys have been here for 10 years + failing tests? Seriously?! Just give up. You don't deserve your job. It pisses me off that these guys make the same money as me, do half the work, and fail their tests on a regular basis. And yet no one says shit, no actions are taken. What the hell is wrong with companies today? And it's not like these guys are newbies. I'm talking guys that have been welding for 25 years. If you can't master your trade after 25 years, maybe you should find other work. I do work with some great guys aswell, and give 100% like me.

Then there is managment. The bunch of monkeys upstairs that think they know what their doing. Let's start with the foreman. Basically an uneducated drunk with zero social skills, that wouldn't even have his job if his mother didn't get it for him.(40 years old and mom finding you a job, that's something to be proud of). He was a shipper/receiver before becoming a foreman, has never held a welding whip in his life, and yet is running a shop? But why? Well there are a few reasons. (a) you can pay him less because he's not educated. (b) he's a YES man because he's to stupid to come up with any valid arguments against the companies decisions. And (c) it's not what you know, it's who you know. Or in this case, who mom knows.

The president of the company. The big cheese. The guy that gets paid 250k a year to make sure everything runs smoothly. One of the biggest dipsh*ts I have ever met in my life. To dumb to see two steps ahead, cheap, and short sited views. Has already cost the company $50,000 in repairs this year alone. One example of his genius. We have a CNC milling machine, a multi million dollar piece of equipment. It broke down, and the maintenance guy was sent over to fix it as usual. Well he came to the conclusion this was way outside his skill level, and told the Prez he didn't feel comfortable working on such an expensive piece of equipment. The prez is to cheap to call in a professional, and makes the maintenance guy fix it. So they tear it down, find out the problem, replace 1 set of clutch packs, and start to reassemble. And that's were the shit hit the fan. They get it back together, start it up and kaboom! Goodbye driveshaft and gears. Maintenance guy put it back together wrong. So now they call in a pro, tear it down again, replace the driveshaft and gears. The outsourced pro recommends they change the other set of clutch packs while the machine is apart. Prez decides against this because the other ones "look ok" to him. So they put her back together, and it runs great..........for two months............until the other set of clutch packs burnt out...........the ones they were told to replace............oops.

Tear it all down again boys. Lets not forget the pro, the maintenance guy, and the machinist all told him to replace the other ones while it was apart. And that it was recommended a professional be called in in the first place. So they ended up tearing the thing down 3 times, breaking parts that were fine in the beginning, and losing 2 months of production because the machine was down. Plus paying wages for the triple teardown. Brilliant.

This is just a small portion of the amount of B.S I deal with everyday. I'm sure you all have to deal with it to. It blows my mind that people can really be this dumb. I dont even know what to think of it. It's just amazing.

I've only entered the working world about 2 years ago after I graduated college. It's sad but true - things like merit, intelligence, etc. often has absolutely nothing to do with whether a person is able to obtain a good position with relatively high pay.

Here's also what you have to keep in mind: Most employers don't actually want smart workers. They prefer dumb ones. Why? Because smart people question things. Smart people make it more difficult for them. They don't care how smart you are. They want someone who will do as they're told and be DEPENDENT on THEM. That's why in certain jobs they would much rather pick someone who is uneducated, has a family to support, etc over someone who is fresh out of college, is considering grad school and has the option to choose something better down the line. The person with a family to support and less education NEEDS them. They are therefore DEPENDENT on them and so they feel secure in trusting this type of person to STAY.

The level of stupidity in most workers is unbelievable. As in, you wouldn't believe it until you see it. I'm totally with you on this because I don't understand how the supervisor from my last job (a Malaysian woman who can barely speak English) was able to make 6 figures a year while I was making...oh....FAR less. Her ability to micromanage can best be compared to a bear trying to tip over a garbage can to see if there's food inside. She just makes random decisions and hopes for the best.

In fairness, I'm sure there are plenty of very competent people working in upper management and are in charge of things, but I think it depends on what type of job it is. Sadly, MANY jobs really ARE just about who you know. Hell, think of it this way - there are jobs that are only posted WITHIN the company. So unless you're a friend or family member of someone who works in that specific company, you wouldn't even KNOW that the open position exists.

I wish intelligence, hard work, merit were more highly regarded, but they really aren't (for the most part).

Reviews?! Haha my company doesn't even know what that means. We don't have reviews.

Not going to happen. I demand excellence from myself. If I do something it's done right the first time. I realize my post makes me sound cocky but thats not the case.
