    Default Protein blends

Often I see protein blends on the packaging of supplements. Something like, "This product contains a blend of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, etc...".

So my question is, how do we know how much isolate is in the container. We know that the flavouring, carbs, added vitamins, etc are fillers. But how do we know if they put 90% of the protein in there concentrate and only 10% isolate?

You can't really. It used to be that the ingredient listed first was the most abundant in the product, then the second was second-most abundant, ect. I'm not even sure if that held true for both the U.S and Canada? Now what they do is put it all in a 'proprietary blend', slap some brackets around the ingredients, and now we don't know how the individual ingredients are placed, since they're now classified as a 'group' of ingredients. Although the more impressive ingredients are very likely to be listed first...making you think you have a better product.

The first ingredient is always the most and it works its way down from there. So if you are looking at a blend of "whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, etc..." then you know there is more isolate than concentrate.
Yes, proprietary blends are very misleading.

as others said.. first ingredient is the highest quantity in the product... with regards to iso/concentrate.. you could probably bet most is concentrate.... why would a manufacturer use 90% isolate and 10% concentrate?? they'd just use pure isolate if that was the case.. cheap gainers probably use alot of 34% whey concentrate..

regarding proprietary blends... i use them.. and i do so to protect intellectual property... but i see both sides for sure... i'm sure there are going to be some who won't buy becuase of that, but can't keep everyone happy.

there are lots of OTHER tricks though that you must be careful of.... for me personally i wouldn't buy a protein that contains creatine.. as creatine tests for roughly double the protein.. ie. if there is about 5g of creatine in a product, it will test for roughly 10g of protein.. so you can see how a manufacturer could use lower protein content, put in some creatine to jack up the protein content... lots of other games like this..

right now, bulk protein is expensive.. its coming down a bit, but still very high... so if you see something that the price is too good to be true.. then its probably for a reason.. i've lab tested alot of different proteins out there, most were good.. and then others were WAAY off...

Why not just buy Whey Iso?

I was using Syntha-6 for a while, but i found if I bought big tubs of ISO it was cheaper and you know you're only getting the best.

I use the following. Whey isolate after workouts and for the rest of my intake cassein protein. Blends are a nice idea but I don't think they cut it.
