      Description:

      How Natrimol™ Works:

      • Increases energy expenditure

      • Enhances the fat burning process

      • Inhibits complex carbohydrate digestion

There are more than 50 individual dietary supplements and more than 125 commercial combination products available for weightloss, but currently, no weight-loss supplements meet the criteria for recommended use. A recent article, "Systematic Review on Dietary Supplements for Body Weight Reduction," published in 2004 by Pittler and Ernst concluded that the evidence for most dietary supplements as aids in reducing body weight are not convincing, and none of the reviewed dietary supplements can be recommended for over the counter use.

Natrimol™ — a newly formulated weightloss product, is designed to fulfill the general public's need for a safe and efficient weight-loss product.

      GREEN TEA LEAF EXTRACT

With respect to the green tea effect on body weight management, Abdul Dulloo and coworker published in 1999 the results of a study on the extent to which daily administration of a green tea leaf extract and caffeine would stimulate thermogenesis and increase daily energy expenditure (EE) in humans. The results of this investigation are the first to show in humans that oral administration of the green tea leaf extract stimulated thermogenesis and fat oxidation, and thus has the potential to influence body weight and body composition.

Westerterp-Plantenga and coworkers conducted a randomized placebo-controlled double blind parallel trial on 76 overweight and moderately obese subjects. The subjects received a special green tea-caffeine combination (270 mg epigallocatechin gallate + 150 mg caffeine per day) or placebo. It was found that high caffeine intake was associated with weight-loss through thermogenesis and fat oxidation. In habitual low caffeine consumers, the green tea-caffeine mixture improved weight maintenance, partly through thermogenesis and fat oxidation.

To Note: Based on the above results, it seems that most available clinical studies suggest that green tea leaf extract is a natural substance of good potential for the treatment of obesity through thermogenesis and fat oxidation processes.

      CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACIDS (CLA)

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) occur naturally in food, mostly in dairy and meat products. Numerous studies in animals showed that CLA supplementation causes changes in body composition, such as a reduction in body fat mass (BFM) and an increase in lean body mass. Mechanisms through which CLA reduces body weight and fat deposition remain to be fully understood. Proposed anti-obesity mechanisms of CLA include decreased energy/food intake and increased energy expenditure, decreased lipogenesis, and increased lipolysis and fat oxidation.

Also, in humans, several CLA studies have been published. The results of those trials are mixed, but in general when the highestquality commercially available grades of CLA were used, it was indicated that there was significant body fat mass reduction relative to placebo controls.

In 2004, Jean-Michel Gaullier and coworkers published the first clinical study, documenting the long-term (12 mo) safety and effi cacy of CLA supplementation in healthy overweight subjects consuming an ad libitum diet and without specific lifestyle restrictions.

Jean-Michel Gaullier and coworkers extended the study for another 12 months on 134 subjects who completed the first period of the investigation to study the safety and body composition after long term use (total 24 months) of CLA supplementations.

To Note: Based on Jean-Michel Gaullier and coworker's long term studies, which concluded that CLA supplementation for 24 months decreases BFM in overweight adults, and may help maintain initial reductions in BFM and weight in the long term, it seems safe to conclude that this ingredient has enough scientific evidence to be added into weightloss products.

      WHITE KIDNEY BEAN EXTRACT

Nearly one-half of calories in human diet are derived from starches, or complex carbohydrates. Prior to absorption, these carbohydrates must fi rst be digested. The enzyme that digests carbohydrates is alpha-amylase.

Alpha-amylase, secreted in saliva and by the pancreas, is responsible for breaking down starch to simple sugars that are absorbed in the small intestine. Blocking this digestive enzyme may prevent the digestion of complex carbohydrates, allowing them to pass through the digestive system. The end result of blocking alpha-amylase would logically be a decrease in the number of calories absorbed, potentially promoting weight-loss.

A study to evaluate the effects of treatment with Phase 2™ (a brand of White Kidney Bean Extract) versus placebo on weight-loss was conducted. Participants were instructed to eat the majority of carbohydrates during lunch and dinner since those were the meals at which Phase 2™ or placebo was taken.

Of a total of 50 subjects who initially were screened, the Phase 2™ group lost an average of 3.79 lbs compared with the placebo group, which lost an average of 1.65 lbs. Similar trends were seen at two, four, and six weeks.

To Note: The data from this study certainly provides preliminary evidence through positive trends that alpha amylase inhibitor isolated from the white kidney bean may be effective in reducing both weight and triglyceride levels. Available studies also showed that it is safe and effective.

      CHROMIUM PICOLINATE

Trivalent Chromium is required for maintaining normal glucose metabolism in laboratory animals; it acts as a cofactor for insulin. In the majority of all chromium supplementation studies in the United States, at least half the subjects with impaired glucose tolerance improved upon chromium supplementation.

With respect of Chromium effects on body weight, a systematic review of dietary supplements for body-weight reduction was conducted by Pittler and Ernst.

The analysis indicated a relatively small reduction of 1.1 - 1.2 kg (0.08 - 0.2 kg/wk) compared with placebo during an intervention period of 6 - 14 wk in patients with an average BMI of 28 - 33.

To Note: Therefore, it seems that adding this nutrient to the formula might complement the positive impact of white kidney beans, green tea and CLA with no reported risk of using such doses.

Finally, it seems that adding these active ingredients together will complement each other and will induce weight-loss by decreasing complex carbohydrate digestion and absorption, stimulate thermogenesis, and enhance fatty acid oxidation.

And if Natrimol™ is used in conjunction with moderate exercise and healthy food habits, the results will be very satisfactory, but the final word will be to the product users to confirm their level of satisfaction on this new formula.
