This tread keeps getting bumped as i age..55 years old in 4 months..just competed at the Fouad show in Windsor..first in Masters and second in light wts. I knew the girl had me when she said she had no children..I have a 30-21 and 18 yr old..tighter abs and legs beat me...NO way did she have my upper body. It's my gem..no matter my age.
Checking in... Turned 53 a couple weeks ago, still giving her! Started a program that is somewhat different than what i usually do, its Gironda's 8x8. Tomorrow will be the second week so it should be more intense, last week was just getting the poundages figured out.
I'm wanting to learn what other 'over 50' year olds are doing to build muscle, stay motivated and diet. I've lifted for over 30 years off and on. No competitions. Lifted for sports- football, pro softbal, etc. Now I want to see what kind of physical shape I can get into. Just went to lifting one major body part per day- chest, back, shoulders, legs, arms. What's the latest supplements to help? Pre-workout, post-workout? Diet recommendations? I'm 6'3", weigh 250 currently. Would like to get to 225 lbs. But not lose so much size in shoulder width and chest.
Motivation comes from within...you need to decide what you want to look like and how you want to live your life...its completely up to you.
Routine:
chest, back, off, shoulders + traps, arms, legs, off, repeat
4 working sets for large muscles, 3 for smaller muscles
Diet: search for Dave Palumbo 200lb man diet follow that for fat loss and muscle maintenance
Cardio:start EOD 20min increase if fat loss stalls
Supps: creatine mono, whey isolate, multi vit, vit D, fish oil, fiber

Just bumping this again. Now 58 had a motorbike accident, so no leg work outs this year,as I broke both lower leg bones , but still pounding the upper body.Must be more of you over 50 now--LOL
I wanna chime in since I'll be 50 in 1 month. I'm 6' 276lbs (give or take a couple), and sit at 10-12% BF. I'm still quite vascular all over. I've been training since I was 20 years old and can honestly say I've never been bigger or stronger than I am now. I have the odd aches and pains popping up, elbows or knees once in a while, but overall am pretty happy with my continued progress. My attitude has always been, if you think your age is gonna make you slow down then it will. I don't think about my age and it hasn't been an issue yet. My biggest pet peeve is when a shitty looking 20 something comes up to me,and says"wow, you look good for your age." WTF. For my age? I look better than you at your age nimrod.
Wow, I posted here 3 years ago and the thread still lives!
So what have I learned in the last 3 years? I'm now 56, have been training for close to 46 years more or less and if there's one piece of advise I can give to help in your pursuit in this sport is hire a trainer, they are invaluable! I hired one this year and found out that I really didn't know that much, as Prae say's, "you don't know what you don't know". I've learned so much in the last year or so and having a blast!!
