Be daring, be different, be impractical,
be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against
the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.
If you are not willing to risk the unusual,
you will have to settle for the ordinary.
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dyin' that never learns to live.

Courage is the first of human qualities because
it is the quality which guarantees the others.
I do not ask to walk smooth paths nor bear an easy load.
I pray for strength and fortitude to climb the rock strewn road.
Give me such courage and I can scale the hardest peaks alone,
And transform every stumbling block into a stepping stone.

Self-respect is the root of discipline.
The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to one's self.
There are always two choices. Two paths to take
. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.
You've got to get up every morning with determination
if you're going to go to bed with satisfaction.

Every choice carries a consequence.
For better or worse,
each choice is the unavoidable consequence of its predecessor.
There are not exceptions.
If you can accept that a bad choice carries the seed of its own punishment,
why not accept the fact that a good choice yields desirable fruit?
Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself:
I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.
I can choose which it shall be.
Yesterday is dead,
tomorrow hasn't arrived yet.
I have just one day, today,
and I'm going to be happy in it.

The remarkable thing we have is a choice every day
regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past...
We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.
We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have,
and that is our attitude

When you learn to embrace your self with a sense of appreciation and affection,
you begin to glimpse the goodness and light that is in you
and gradually you will realize that you are worthy of respect from yourself.
When you recognize your limits,
but still embrace your life with affection and graciousness,
the sense of inner dignity begins to grow.
You become freer
and less dependent on the affirmation of outer voices
and less troubled by the negativity of others.

We cannot choose how many years we will live,
but we can choose how much life those years will have.
We cannot control the beauty of our face,
but we can control the expression on it.
We cannot control life's difficult moments but we can choose to make life less difficult.
We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world,
but we can control the atmosphere of our minds.
Too often we try to choose and control things we cannot.
Too seldom we choose to control what we can …
our attitude.

No one else "makes us angry."
We make ourselves angry when
we surrender control of our attitude.
What someone else may have done is irrelevant.
We choose, not they.
They merely put our attitude to a test.
We cannot choose how many years we will live,
but we can choose how much life those years will have.
We cannot control the beauty of our face,
but we can control the expression on it.
We cannot control life's difficult moments
but we can choose to make life less difficult.
We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world,
but we can control the atmosphere of our minds.
Too often we try to choose and control things we cannot.
Too seldom we choose to control what we can …
our attitude.
Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain
but it takes character and self control
to be understanding and forgiving.

Confronting our feelings
and giving them appropriate expression
always takes strength, not weakness.
It takes strength to acknowledge our anger,
and sometimes more strength yet to curb the aggressive urges anger may bring
and to channel them into nonviolent outlets.
It takes strength to face our sadness
and to grieve and to let our grief
and our anger flow in tears when they need to.
It takes strength to talk about our feelings
and to reach out for help
and comfort when we need it.

Always bear in mind
that your own resolution to success
is more important than any other one thing.
Being challenged in life is inevitable,
being defeated is optional.
Everything can be taken from a man
but the last of human freedoms,
the right to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances
the right to choose one's own way.
I am bigger than anything that can happen to me.
All these things, sorrow, misfortune, and suffering,
are outside my door.
I am in the house and I have the key.
