Not to harp on a dead thread, but I'd just thought I'd bring up the details of a gym's non-drop policy:

"Why is dropping weights not allowed?

Safety…1) the startle factor if you are concentrating on a heavy lift and someone drops a weight close to you it may cause you to lose your concentration may result in an injury to you or others around you

2) a dropped weight is a weight that is not controlled possibly causing injury to you and/or someone around you.

3) Dropping weights can damage the equipment making them unsafe to use and expensive to replace/repair."

Other than the last point, does this make sense to anyone else?

Totally.. I've never seen the point of dropping the weight. From my experience it's the guy that needs to drop the weight the least that does, experienced lifter's tend to have control of the weight.. There are times when it can't be helped, but not consitantly set after set.

I hate weight droppers! Especially dumbbells presses or deadlifts. I can do any set to total failure and still not drop the weight on the ground. Like faller says, once in a while you can't control it, or perhaps you've tweaked your arm and you don't want to get injured, but set after set, with the big weights....just makes no sense!

If you're so strong that you lift weights you can't control after your set, its time to start working on the other muscle so you can handle you're weight when your done with it.

I think it should not be allowed for the simple fact that its an annoyance to others. Same goes for grunting....I saw a 60 years old lady grunting louder than any other guy in the gym the other day with 10 pound curls...Was kinda funny!

A heavy set of dumbell bench press to failure pretty much requires dropping unless I want to destroy my rotator cuff.

As for grunting, if you aren't making noise when squatting or deadlifting a heavy weight I'm pretty sure it isn't heavy.

While I understand that the vast majority of people lifting in a gym don't believe in actually increasing the weight or actually doing anything disgusting like sweating but hey **** em.

since ive started pushing real weight i've started to drop the DB's more often...my safety is my #1 concern... not only because the contract which you sign upon accepting membership moves the onus of personal injury on yourself

No disrespect, but even at failure you should still be able to bring the weight down in the eccentric part of the motion to you're chest, then you also should be able to bring the weights to your knees. After a few puffs you should be able to stand up. Easier to not go through all that and drop it, but I just do it out of respect.

With that said, there is a limit to how much respect I can give. I've had people complain that I bothered them when loading plates onto the bench press and I actually put effort in not making noise in everything I do at the gym.

I never grunt while deadliftiing triple my bodyweight for sets of 10. At most, I'll let a fart out on my last rep (jokes)...

I save farting for the leg press and only when people who don't like grunting are close by.

I am light. I made it up to 185 but was kinda fat - perhaps about 15%. I am 172 now relatively lean. Have focused more on bodybuilding now so can't do triple for 10. At 165 I've done 495 for 12 raw.
