View Full Version : Frozen Chicken Problem

I have ~14lbs of chicken breast frozen into a giant mass in my freezer. I normally leave out what I want to cook and package the rest into freezer bags but sadly I was not home when the chicken came. It is frozen solid in a bag...in a box...and I don't know what the best course of action is.

break it up with a hammer, so what if you break some pieces into 1/4's or 1/2's

I'll give that a try. Thanks ubc.

Tried the hammer, didn't have much luck. It's not packaged like from a grocery store. It's like a frozen turkey, except made up of a whole bunch of chicken breasts that are fused together. Hard as a rock...

Keep it out of the freezer till fully thawed, begin cooking and invite all of us to dinner... I'll bring the wine :D

yup... happened to me once... put the whole lump on a cookie sheet, covered it with foil and stuck it in the oven... the top and bottom cooked fast and it was half frozen in the middle.. turned into like 3 hours of cooking nightmare!
do you have a turkey roaster? might be better than a cookie sheet...

LOL, you could probably drive here in the time it would take to thaw. I've got a big roasting pan out and I'm debating it. I don't know what other options there is. To break it up I have to thaw it out but once it's thawed I'll have to cook it all anyways.

You could probably defrost it, and as it thaws, peel them off until you have enough. The core should still be frozen solid.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I would get chicken wings back attached like this. They'd just come like this, one frozen blob, in a box at the grocery store. I don't know who thought this was a good idea.

Anyway. The water thing works the best, and the quickest. Put the wad in the sink.
Fill it with hot water. Find something to stir the chicken around. Do that until the water is much cooler. Then fill the sink and repeat, pealing off breasts as they thaw. Probably want to use plastic bags to separate them in the freezer, as they will stick like mad after being so wet

Yup, I wasn't sure it was ok to do it this way but it is. As long as the chicken doesn't get too warm (you can't use really hot or boiling water) than you can re-package and re-freeze it and it should be fine.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

You could also, unthaw them all, cook them all and then refreeze. I cook a bunch of chicken breast, cut them up and then package them into smaller meal size ziploc bags then all you gotta do is take one out, rewarm it in the microwave or oven, or whatever and use as you like. alot quiker this way also.

I ended up putting all the chicken in the sink and filling it up with warm water. Had to do it a few times. Then seperated the chicken into freezer bags to cook later. I think this method works the best. Thanks again for all the advice everyone. Kinda suprised all the responses this thread got.

Was there a massive sale on chicken breasts somewhere ? I plan on going to to the US and hitting up Sam's club. I hear they have like 25-50lbs of boneless skinless for real cheap.

No. It's a matter of getting it lower down the chain. (before it gets to the supermarket)

i find it way better.......

lets say you want some good steak.... some decent steak @ loblaws is like $15-$20 each.......so have a few friends over and its $80 for 4 people.........if you go to costco and buy the whole filet and cut it up yourself for $80, i can get about 12 steaks out of it 1.5" thick and some extra small pieces for $80....

also same with pork..but the pork loin is only like $20...and get 12-15 pork steaks

chicken breasts are about $25 for 10 or 12 i think in a pack....fresh.

i like to think i save alot of $$ buying at costco....but what i save i seem to spend on something else !!

i love costco !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we often buy a case of filets...15 in a box but you end up with 1 free....

:yeah

Buy a vacuum sealer, wait for chicken to be on sale at like 3$/lbs then simply buy for nearly a 100$ and freeze everything

May not be ideal for your diet but in that situation I would thaw them all and make a nice big pot of a nice healthy chicken chili, which can be frozen in individual portions. Probably cook the other half and just eat them over a few days.

the safest way with water is luke warm water you don't want it to hot as it will thaw more unevenly.

Did not read every post so sorry if this has been said.

Buy a cheap saw, clean it and cut chicken into portion size pieces???

When you go to cook some of them they will be cut already.
