I skimmed around but didn't find a thread on this..

Im just curious as to what most people are using for bodybuilding competition colour... like which products... there are a few out there and we have tried different combinations of product at different competitions, but last year, leigh looked too light, and had no shine like some people get.

Thank you!

Nicole Ball had us use Jana Tana ....Loved it!!! Fantastic product!! Not messy, one coat the night before, and one in the morning.

For the best colour Ive found this works great!

Get a decent tan naturally...I am fair so I start tanning about 8 weeks out and run Melanotan for about 2-3 weeks...by that time I am fairly dark and once per week tanning is more than enough. On the friday morning before the contest do a final touch up shave for the entire body. On friday evening start Protan applications...youll need one 8 oz bottle. Use the entire bottle thru the evening which will be about 2-3 full coats. Do NOT use the brush they give you...go to Canadian Tire and get some foam sponges...pour the protan into a tupper ware dish and use the sponge to suck some up and apply it. Dont try to do a perfect job just get it on...youll shower in the morning so dont worry about streaks. Onced you get all the protan on...make sure you have old sheets to sleep on and go to bed. When you wake up take a very light rinse in the shower do not use soap just light rinse for about 2 min. Then shave your face if you are male etc. Once finished Apply a thick coat of "red bronze" dream tan...use your hand...youdont need gloves...it washes off easily. Again dont try to do a nice job...just get it on..use an ample amount...dont use a small amout and spread it out nice..trust me use a good amount. Once its on...use your hands to pat it down....this will even things out. Once done...now this is the key...put on an old tshirt and track pants...some will come off on these...this is good....it also allows the dream tan to seep into the skin and settle. Keep your face clean and dont put any tanning on your face until you are at the event and in the pump up room. Prior to pumping up remove your track pants and tshirt...touch up any areas that may need it...add a small amout of Protan Muscle Sheen for shine....pat down with hands or a towel as you dont want to be too shiny. Put a small amount of Dream tan on your hands and spread it onto your face evenly...you dont need too much...make sure to cover the ears and neck etc. Then pump up lightly and use a towel to pat down and areas that appear too shiny...thats it.m Save some dream tan for touch ups and your face for the night show.

Great post P! I was was wondering about when to shave last, I was thinking Thursday evening, but if Friday morning is fine too thats even better. I been doing that same thing for this show, I am fair skin as well and when I go under the lights I look not as dark as I should, so this year I been using the MTII and tanning to get a very good base first. I was going to apply a coat of Protan Thursday night, then shower Friday morning, then keep with the applications until I get my desired look, but I'll wait until Friday morning instead. Once again awesome post.

One word of caution...do not put the Dream tan directly over the Protan without a light rinse in the shower first...you will be too dark and lose some of your cuts and vascularity in the colour.

AWESOME!!!!
that's an amazingly helpful (and detailed!!!) post!
the main thing we missed was Protan Muscle Sheen! I think I'll order some right now! is that an oily kinda looking stuff? some other people used some oily stuff. Leigh didn't look as "shiney" on stage!

Thank you Very Much!!

(just incase anyone is ever interested, Mr Clean magic erasers wipe protan off anything, even bathtubs!!)

Jan tana looks much better imo, it has a nice color to it...we applied 1 -2 coats night before, then showered in the am, then another coat on before prejudging, then right before the stage used some of the glaze that comes with it...You definitely need the sponges, they work great...My last shave was on the wed night, but im very unhairy, so a more hairy person may need it closer to show time..
Jan tana is becoming more popular i believe...
It was a very easy process....

Ive used Jan Tana before. The problem with Jan Tana is you need alot otherwise you never appear dark enough. It doesnt settle into the skin very nicely at all. Its hell to get off...especially hands and feet. It will streak under the lights...especially if you sweat alot...it will start to run. I used it the morning show and switched to the Dream Tan the night show WAY better!

and with jan tana we looked great for a week or so after, it has an after effect that looks very good, not like you came out of a holocaust camp...lol...different strokes, ive only tried it out once and loved it, will try again for sure, plus we have a lot left over...very nice application pump bottle also......
CC is a very fair red headed lady and it made her really stand out on stage....lots of compliments on our colors by the judges also, some with protan were told they werent on with their color...mine didnt streak at all while sweating, i showered and exfoliated after first 2 coats and it really dug in...im naturally quite dark as well..
Maybe different provinces look for different colors??

Pretty even colouring...you could be darker however...maybe one more coat...possibly streaking is just from my skin type...who knows...but it was pretty bad.
Agree straight Protan looks horrible.

P,
Should I use dermablend or something to cover my tattoos before applying the other products?

I have heard that you can pretty much make tats invisible....

I'm going to skip the Dream Tan though as I do not like it's color. Last guy I prepped used Protan only with some Pam and had the best coloring in the show, it worked out perfect.

I used melanotan II to get a dark base tan for my last show. That stuff turned my skin charcoal color, and my hair black. Could have passed for a puerto-rican!

Normally the tanning products do a decent job of covering tats up.

Protan, protan, protan...my buddy I prepped for his last show has his whole back done, arms, shoulders, chest and sides and when he was up on stage you couldnt tell at all. I think we hit him with a good 6-7 coats starting Wednesday night.

Agreed. Apply lots of protan with a wash cloth or something similar. Then with the pam don't spray it directly on. Just get some on your hands and pat it on otherwise you end up having to wipe a lot off or they look too shiny under the lights. This was the general advice of a woman on another forum who helps some of the pro's with applying their tan. Although she got into a lot more detail and there are a couple products that work better than pam but it works just fine.

Without a decent base tan..straight Protan wont give you a nice colour...youll look like you have jaundice. Do not use Pam...that is old school it makes you shine like a basted turkey onstage...Protan Muscle Sheen or Jan Tana posing gels are the standards.

i want to invent gravy flavoured protein powder!!... could you imagine getting an extra 26 g of protein on your rice or potatoes in a tastey gravy flavour???

Back to colour... there is a "final touch" base we used one year kinda by accident and I sort of liked the look of it... it was in a kind of tube and was really dark but I can't remember where we picked it up or even what it was called... it was put on after a few coats of protan the friday before the show... does this product sound familiar to anyone?

being female is kinda hard too because you can't really use the product on the face the same way they guys do... luckily Leigh is sponsored my Provici Cosmetics and they matched a face makeup to the colour she was at provincials... plus often girls end up looking like bad drag queens when they put all the makeup on... sorry rambling a bit...

I go to MAC and buy a facial bronzer that matches MY skin tone, looks way better and natural than applying Dream Tan or Protan on your face those guys always look odd.
