I think you've started more threads than I have already. You ask a lot of questions! Just go with the cheapest whey concentrate you can find and eat a ton of food. I've heard good things about Mutant Mass by PVL although I don't use weight gainers. Get a few 2kg tubs of peanut butter and you have all the weight gainer you'll need for a while.

Heavy cream, whole wheat flour or oatmeal (I grind it in a coffee grinder) and you favorite whey....less sugar than gainers and lots of cals for a low price....But you should get most of your calories from whole healthy foods.

dont waste your money on gainers, just mix a few scoops of whey with oats and some milk then your good and if you want to throw in some creatine and BCAA's do it.

Add crushed or coffe ground oats to your shake for extra carbs, almond butter, or olive oil for extra fats, blend as desired...way better and cheaper and healthier than weight gainers....

If you`re not lactose intolerant, get the ordinary whey concentrate, and add carb sources like oatmeal, yoghurt, frozen fruits, peanut butter, oils. The gainers if used properly will cost you way more than doing this.

I remember trying weight gainers years ago. All it did was make me fat. They are unhealthy. I was young when I took them so I didnt have the knowledge I do now. Like all the other have said make your own. When making your own you decide what goes into your body instead of taking in the unknown. When creating your shake make sure to get in some healthy fats, a good isolate, carbs ( fruit and oats are a good choice ). My shake in the middle of the afternoon is one of my favorite meals.

Im my opinion, you would be better off eating more whole foods than using a weight gain powder or any type of protein powder for that matter. Try to stick to using a quality Isolate powder post workout only, and getting all your protein from your meals. In the long run your will add more quality muscle, look better. For a lot of guys the powders are not good on the appetite. Also a lot of the top trainers like Hany Rambod, Chad Nichols, etc dont use powders, they get their guys to eat more whole foods and I truly believe as well that it is way more beneficial, though not as convenient.

I agree with the above posts. Weight gainers are sugar loaded and just add fat. Better to make a protein shake and add stuff with nutritional value to it like in the above post in order to up your intake.

But this thead is about shakes, not whole food. Snarf, snarf... I find it strange you say shakes are not good for the appetite when they are the exact reason most use them. If I had to have protein from whole food sources 5-6 times a day, my overall cals would suffer and result in less growth. The powders, especially when gaining are a god send because you digest them faster allowing you to eat more overall cals. You must be a guy who loves to eat or is more driven than me, but whole food all day would not work for me. Plus it`s almost impossible to accomplish in real life.

I'm a big eater, but I still have a shake or two as my protein in meals a day. It's convenient and usually pretty tasty.

That must come in handy. The most whole food I ever ate was 2 meals of 300gr ground beef with 2-3 cups of sweet potatos, the other was an egg meal. Other 3 were shakes with lots of oats, fruits, yoghurt and oils. But my hat goes off to anyone who can down 4+ whole meals a day.

Yeah, usually 4 whole foods, 2 shakes. There's this canned chicken out now that maple leaf makes. Makes it easy to eat chicken and turkey because you just pop the can and go. It's not the same as "Flakes of chicken" This stuff has the heart and stroke foundation seal on it. 32g's of protein, 1g fat. Pretty much the same make up as tuna. It's a bit pricey, like $2.50 a can here in the maritimes. When you consider eating 3 or 4 a day, that's $10, about the same someone would spend at a fastfood joint. That's 124g's of protein for $10, some protein bars cost $7 for 30g's of protein. Crazyness.

Good to know about the cans, they seem convinient, maybe I`ll give one a try. And for sure not that expensive when compared to protein bars and fast food.

The best shake is the one that you make yourself. ie whey protein isolate, added healthy fats, carbs etc
Stay away from premade weight gainers...tonnes of sugar, and little else.

Good to know... what part of the grocery store is it in? With the tuna?

Actually eating your meals instead of drinking them should speed up your metabolism from the energy spent to digest the food, which in turn should allow you to eat more. It has nothing to do with loving to eat, its a means to an end if you want to build. And if its almost impossible to accomplish in real life as you say, well then you arent working hard enough at it.

Try it bro, it seems hard the first week or so but your body gets used to it and before you know it the meals dont get big enough and you will slowly start eating more quality foods.

A lot of the top nutritionists also say guys that rely more on shakes have a softer look to them as well.

Bro, this turned into an EXELLENT thread, dont worry about asking questions, Even if you find stuff through the search function there are always new people joining the board and they have good input. Getting realtime answers to your questions is funner also. This board would sure be boring without questions from people like you & I wanting to learn about PROPER NUTRITION.

I am leaning more towards real food now because I`m getting more serious in the dieting. So more real food, especially at night. Like my second post workout meal was a 400gr steak, just had 300grams of lean ground beef, will have 5 whole eggls around 10:30 or so then a 44 grams of whey with 2 tbs of peanut butter before bed. Before I would have had a shake like the pre bed one instead of the ground beef.

I wonder if I will try this when bulking time comes, just adding in more carbs. The only thing is if I want to eat rice or sweet potatoes, they gotta be reheated, same with the ground beef. It`s just to nasty cold. Any tricks you have to get lots of carbs and protein that are portable? Chicken is alright cold and some of that eizekel bread could fit the bill for a meal or two. Suggestions welcome!

All I can say is don't use quickmass. The only thing it did is adding fat to my gut. Try an isolate protein mix it with oats, peanut butter, milk and there you go the best weight gainer you can get.

I hear ya bro, sometimes I dont have the luxury of heating up my food either. Ground beef I find ok room temp or kinda cold mixed with some pineapple chunks and some of that Sweet chili sauce mixed with it, eaten plain with bread or mixed with rice, but cold rice sucks, lol. Ground beef and pineapple is great with that sweet chili or teriyaki.

Another way to get the beef in and be able to eat it cold is to make beef balls. Mix the ground beef with some egg, chili sauce, garlic, oats and roll into balls and bake them. I eat a lot of these in the offseason I just dip into some ketchup...Im a ketchup freak. For carbs I'd have Ezekial bread or cereal with it afterwards. The bread is great with some butter on it, lol.

Having shakes is fine while dieting or in the off season. If you are using whey isolate and adding some essential fats and fibre it is a MEAL. It is still digested and the transit time is almost identical if you add some fats. The thermic effect of digestion will be insignificant when it comes to weight loss or metabolism increase. The idea that anyone has a softer look because of eating shakes is rediculous. I have many clients not to mention myself...that use shakes on and off season and my clients are usually the hardest in the show.

I totally agree. I only use a good whey Isolate, and then add whatever I want depending on the diet at the time.

Best weight gain shake for me:
2 cups water
90g whey isolate
1 cup oats
80-100g waxy maize powder (maltodextrin mixes too thick for me)
big glob of natural peanut butter
maybe some frozen berries

Gotta drink it fast right outta the blender or it will settle out.
