A dear friend who knows my situation offered me a pc of gym equipment her family had hardly used and won't when they move up north either.

A Free Weight Leverage gym by Body Solid. It has 600 lbs worth of weights and she is giving it to me for FREE. It's only 2 yrs old.

I have a concrete floor in my basement that is painted. The walls are block and one is peg board. ONe window, basement size. I have alot of older gym equipment but this new unit will be a bonus. I want an open area for free weights and the other area for the machine and a hack squat I have already.

My 16 yr old is a great dancer and wants me to put down a wood floor so she can use the open space for dancing practice..not a bright idea with dampness.

This gym is going to be my new personal training salon. Not a gym but a place for women to go for one on one training. Many of them are late 20s and just had babies and wanting to get their bodies back. Two are getting married next year. Another is the wife of a Politician and hates the gym scene. This is just the start of it and I have not let it out yet accept to friends.

My questions are...

1. Flooring..Tile it with peal and stick..Paint it? It's painted now..older burgandy colour.

2. Are Murals Tacky? Tropical I"m thinking on the peg board walls. I'll put up a backboard first then the murals on it that are made out of wall paper strips.

3. Colors? Do I go modern like lime green and orange? Or retro like pink, brown and blue?

4. What to charge?

5. If I let other trainers us the gym what do I charge them?

6..In time should I finish the ceiling?

1. linoleum, cork, parkete are all options and there are a bunch of really cool finishes in these materials.
Tile is a bit of a problem as it can give you the feeling of being in a kitchen or bathroom.
Go to the big stores specialized in this stuff, get samples and bring to the space in order to check it put how it will look.

2. Murals are tacky!
Paint the peg board wall the same colour of the rest of the room, 2 shades darker or a contrasting same shade or one or 2 up or down.

As son as you can switch it to a mirrored wall as it will give more dept to the space make it look bigger and be useful for training as well.

3. Acqua green would be my choice as it is calming and the client will not have the feeling of being in a basement.

White is too aseptic, strong colours in a smaller space are very tricky, beige has no personality.

4. Hard to tell you. Many variables. A good starting point is to check out how much the dominating gym/chain is charging and have that as your STARTING price. Keep in mind that you are offering a superior service.

In my case I charge more than the chain and I sell packages that expire within 3 months the more they buy more of a discount they get because they are showing more commitment.

In that way you have a more stable income, help your client financially and send the time wasters away.

5. $20 to $30 i s standard in Toronto

6. design questions via internet with no images are hard to answer.

I assume that a client looks for a place where they can train but feels good to go as well. If I'd open a space geared towards females I'd do my best to make that place look like a spa keep it modern and at teh same time not waste much $$$.

Cork floors are cool looking, warm, absorb impact and durable.

I'd use a dark shade

The walls I'd paint some pale washed out version of orange, blue, or green.

The peg board I'd paint the same colour of the walls or make it and accent/focal point using colour or cheap prints (there are great images to be downloaded for free at the internet) That I can frame using canadian tire bought frames (total cost of $30 each maximum)

As soon as I had the resources I'd make that a mirrored wall if possible.

The ceiling I'd just live as it is, bare can be cool but if doesn't look that good a good coat of paint will be useful.

Canadian tire, Home depot, Ikea Home sense and winners are really good places for you to start looking for solutions. Ask the staff that sometimes they can be really helpful.

Thank you dear. I modernized my home office this winter and pics of it are on facebook.

I"m going to look for cork flooring.
