I just have to ask this question because I got into an argument with a friend about the protein content in flake tuna vs chunk tuna. He is on tren so he won the argument, He said chunk is better and I said it doesnt make a difference, what do you think?

If you eat a lot of tuna you should eat the light tuna not the white tuna. Light tuna comes from skipjack and yellowfin tuna which are around 20-25 pounds when caught whereas white tuna is albacore, and are around 1500 pounds and over 20 years old when they are caught. Because of there age they can have a serious mercury buildup and for us to eat it everyday is not good. Ever heard of mercury poisoning? if i eat tuna it is bought frozen to avoid all the sodium that comes in the canned varietys. If i do have to eat out of a can i will buy wild salmon, much better IMHO.

I like it all although I have a tendency to buy 10 cans of the cheap stuff (flake). Oddly from a heavy metals perspective this works out well because this is usually made up of the smaller less toxic fish.

Tell him to look at the nutrition label.. that should tell you right there how much protein each can has. I don't see where the argument is.

I agree but he says the labels are wrong. the protein content is the same on both labels.

Ha, there's no winning with someone who thinks like that man. No matter what you say, no matter how logical you are, he'll insist he's right.

I'm sure he's thinking the chunk is more dense, less water retention, while the flake is in small pieces which allow more liquid.

Best way to settle the argument is to get a food scale. Open up each can and squeeze out all the water, then weigh each can's contents separately. See if one weighs more than the other.

Wont work. For starters, the flake tuna has less protein because it tends to have a small amount of fat. Usually the chunk tuna is listed as having no fat. Also, protein content isn't determined by weight. I would imagine the chunk tuna has a slightly higher protein content because of the area of the fish it's taken from.

Different parts of the fish constitute whether it's flake or chunk? Huh, didn't know that.. thought it was the same either way, just the way they prepared it before canning.

Bump this, solid Albacore is by far the best but the mercury content is way higher. I limit myself to 3-4 cans a week maximum.

I hate tuna. I would buy the small flavored ones and eat 2-3 at a time, but at $1.15 each, I now just eat chicken breast instead.

I remember a few years back there was a brand that had more protein in chunk then flake. I didn't know why, but my guess was there was less tuna in the flake, which seemed to be true because it seemed to make less. I used to go through about 4 per day, so I saw the trend.

I take the labels as true, so if it is true, then it was something like 32g vs. 30g for that particular brand. Hardly worth caring about. Eat the kind you like better. I like chunk better, my wife likes flake.

Is the few grams really worth the arguement?

I eat chunk light just because I think it tastes better.
