Which is optimal to use for an injection and what is the reasoning behind it? I noticed at the docs office that he uses 70%.

All my BD alcohol swabs are 70%. You can buy them at walmart for $2.00 for a box of 100 swabs. They are really convenient.

You need 50-70% for it to be effective against virus and bacteria. The reasoning is that the bacteria and virus can defend itself by creating a hard shell and repel the solution. In order for the alcohol to do its job it need to penetrate the outer shell. In order to do this it needs to be diluted. Once it has penetrated it can then kill off bacteria and viruses. 99% is not effective.

I buy 99%. It doesn't matter but more is always better right?

^^^^ This is one case more is not better. 99% is NOT effective in killing of viruses and bacteria.

RagingRandy is right, 99% is not nearly as effective as 70%. My father works in a labratory and they only use 70% to sterilize their equipment. He explained that it has to do with the bacteria/viruses detecting the higher concentration and somehow defending itself from it...

Hate to HJ a thread but since we are talking about alcohol did you see the news story about Alcohol-based sanitizers being delay going to reserves due to abuse fears. You got to be joking

99% is disproportionally more expensive than 70% as the process to get rid of the remaining water involves cracking it with benzene and is quite cumbersome. 99% is fine.

I use 99% and have never had an injection related problem so far

More crock: repeated hearsay w/o understanding. Alcohol kills bacteria, period.

^^^ Seeing as I studied chemistry I know of what I speak. Feel free to continue your practices. But, next time you are at the hospital ask a doctor or nurse to confirm what I told you.

If you need a full explanation.....As the alcohol penetrates it starts to coagulate the protein in the cell. Too high a concentration will coagulate the protien too fast for the alcohol to penetrate to the centre to effectively kill the cell.
