No clue, wouldn't care if it was free either. Will stick with Windows XP Pro till the end of the world. Plus, you can download Windows 7 free anywho. LOL

I thought the downloaded version of windows 7 wasnt complete or something? And Ive heard nothing but good things from windows 7 as its not just a "new-look" of XP its a whole new OS. But to be fair Ive been told XP had several problems just like vista (but just not as bad) when it was frist released

Well, considering XP has been around for a long time, it's pretty much the mostly used. Your right, when something comes out, it takes a while to fix the bugs. I still hate Vista.. with a passion!!!!

1. Windows 7 is not RTM yet. This means that the final (gold) build have not been compiled and hence is not yet available in any of the distributions channels. What you find scattered around the net is most likely RC1 (Release Candidate 1) or subsequent non RTM builds.
2. Think of Windows 7 as the better version of Vista..an evolution, not a revolution. At the core of it, Windows 7 still uses a lot of Vista's components (minor updated kernel, same driver model, fs drivers, etc..) so that makes Windows 7 only marginally better than Vista, and this is not necessarily bad news. On the same token Windows 7 has added support for the newest i7 based CPUs (with 8 vcores 4+4HT) and for SSD drives by implementing the TRIM feature to make writing on dirty blocks much more efficient. It is also more efficient in running on multi-core CPUs and has better threading and a more robust and balanced task scheduling.
3. Vista is *not* a bad OS. It just had a lot of bad press because MS was moving to a new driver model and hence they broke a lot of devices moving from Windows XP. But by now, most new devices come with proper Vista drivers and hence are Windows 7 compatible out of the box. The other reason why it got bad reviews is that MS promised a lot of innovations for Vista which they did not deliver and are finally putting most in windows 7. In fact most of the people that "bitch" about Vista have never tried it in the first place.
My simple recommendation:
If you have a newer machine with an Intel Core/Core2 or newer architecture and depending on your usage, upgrade your machine to 3GB of RAM and install Windows 7 x32 when released (or RC1 now and RTM later) or upgrade to 6~8GB of RAM on the cheap and install Windows 7 x64 provided all the devices you use have proper x64 drivers and support.
If you have an older machine P4 or lower, make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM installed and install Windows XP.

ZeOne is such an asset to the board when it comes to computer knowledge... for those not that knowledgeable, just skip to the last couple of sentences and it usually gets a little simpler...lol

This is an excellent post. I installed x64 vista and have never looked back, i DO get an occasional blue screen but most of it relates to overheating. When vista came out, i hated because it lacked drivers for most of my hardware.
its nearly flawless now.

I can't say my experience with Vista has been positive. The security 'features' are ****ing infuriating. I was trying to help a friend use an external hard drive with his new Lenovo laptop. It should be as simple as plugging it in and using it, but every single goddamn folder or file we were trying to access was giving us repeated errors stating we didn't have sufficient security privileges, despite changing permissions in a number of different settings, some folders were still left inaccessible.
Vista can seriously lick my nuts with it's bullshit security 'features'. The OS is in no way intuitive.
I've yet to try 7, but I've heard better things.

Win 7 is what vista should have been in the first place. I like the updated interface for sure. Its basically vista SP3 + more eye candy.
