Two local performers say they have been barred from performing in a June 23 festival to mark the St. Jean Baptiste holiday because they are English.
Apparently the "country" I live in tolerates this bullshit along with booing the Star Spangled Banner.
I love it! St. Jean Baptiste Day the gym will be closed, but come Canada Day it will be wide open. Come to think of it everything is open on Remembrance day too, which leads me to believe that Quebec has its priorities open for display.

That's the most absurd thing I ever heard of. Really a bunch of discrimination is rampant in Quebec.
No malice towards any of the people there, but I have not been back since I left in 1977.

F'k that risk of a French virus on my comp no way
unless its a STD i pick up on St. Catherin's
barred or just not invited and being bitches about it? People think just because they want something they're entitled to it. We don't have white people giving speeches in black rallies, heterosexuals leading the gay pride, men at the head of feminism movements. We're celebrating our french roots on that day, can't you ****ing give us a break. We're struggling to keep our culture as it is and even in the most remote places of quebec it's becoming hard. If anglophones were at risk of being assimilated, you'd be the firsts to cry about it. Some of our laws do discriminate to some extent, but hey, it could be worst, the whole system is forcing us to become english speaking if we want anything in life (ahem, what language am I using right now?). Can we just have one french speaking day a year? please...

Sorry Seth, but I'll disagree with you on this one. This is an piece of the article
"The June 23 event, to be held in Pelican Park in Rosemont, is billed as an alternative to the big St. Jean Baptiste Day bash the next day at Maisonneuve Park. Its intention is to promote home-grown bands."
Remember, this is not the St. Jean big one. It's a smaller one to promote local bands. Problem is the reality of Quebec, montreal in particular, is that English has always been there. Can you imagine it was said that only people who were white (as white was the color of the first settlers) could perform there. It is discrimination, regardless if the French language is threatened. If it were a day for French bands, then I would agree with you. But a festival to promote local bands turns this into straight discrimination as they are just as local as any French band. Just that their language is different. It's really sad as it could have been an event to bridge the gap of hatred and anger toward language in Quebec. Celebrate what we are, a multicultural city. Imagine having an asian band that was grown locally and performing there? Haitian? Morrocan? Algerian? Etc.. Quebec, especially Montreal is not about the French and their culture anymore. It's about multiculturalism and soon to be expanding in a town near you. Discrimination with the excuse of language and culture just doesn't cut it in this age and time. One day. we will all be the minority in this country regardless of language and culture. Separated or not.
an alternative to the big St. Jean Baptiste Day bash

My question is why is the Fete National only for pure line? Is it a holiday for Quebecois, or Quebecers?
The band is a Montreal band and should be able to sing, but my problem is that the event is taking government money. If it was a private event without any government funds well then it is the organizers and sponsors prerogative to select bands, and it is might right to boycott any sponsor and not support the event. However since tax payer dollars are being used, and anglos pay lots of taxes, then they should get equal treatment.

I'd love for the rest of Canada to be English only and have it enforced like the language Nazi's in Quebec enforce French only. Ever since Pierre, Canada has been ****ed up.

WHO
"On June 24, 1880, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society organized the gathering of all francophone communities across North America. The event was the first National Congress of French Canadians (Congrès national des Canadiens français)."
I understand this being a provincial holiday might be somewhat of a finger for some english-speaking quebecers, but it's about celebrating our culture. I really don't understand what the big deal is. When I moved to ontario, I spoke english, if I were to move to move to germany I'd speak ****ing german. The way I see it, things aren't that complicated, you live by the local customs rather than mess with the dominant culture. For those angered by that statement, think about how you feel when the asians and muslims are culturally taking over Toronto and Vancouver... yes it's exactly the same for us being slowly assimilated. Law 101 might be discriminant, but that's the last stand for our culture

Muslims, blacks, asians, anglos are NOT Quebec original culture. They degrade the original culture. But it can't be stopped. I have nothing against the french fete national, I have everything against discrimination. Whatever form it is, it is still discrimination. What if we were to say hell, there are too many blacks, let's pass a law to limit blacks in Quebec. The UN would have a field day with that. The only problem here is that what Quebec is doing is so borderline on human rights violations, it sits right on the fence so the UN is not getting involved.
BTW, if you go back and see the history of the law and why it had to be changed from its original form is because it DID violate human rights of freedom and expression.
But I have no problem with the french celebrating their language and culture. I participate every year and encourage it as it's unity we all value in our lives.
But discrimination is something I will speak up against when I see it.

Oh and Quebec culture ALWAYS included the english. Without it, you lose part of your history and culture. The politicians use the language and culture thing to get the masses heated up and distracted so they can achieve their goals. The world is changing at a hell of a dramatic pace. If we can't keep up, there is going to be tons of hardship in Quebec. Other countries are starting to out produce Canada. BRIC will surpass Canada by 2016 I believe. That's Brazil, Russia, India, China. That means we will be hurting more then. Who'll care about language when your kids can't find a job and can't afford education or you're dying of some disease and no doctors to help you.
As a wise person once said, "United we stand, divided we fall". Canada is stronger with Quebec in it and vice versa.
Than's my last 2cc's on this :)
Totally agree with you on this one. I stand for my culture, but I've never uttered any words about separatism.. okay, maybe back in college but that doesn't count does it?

We need to stop thinking about "our" culture and this collectivist mind set because the Francophone from the Est Island probably has more in common with a guy from Beaconsfield than he does with somebody in the Abitibi or Saguenay.
The language may be the same but one guy's last name is Trembley and married his sister, while the others probably work in similar jobs.
The rats in charge love playing the nationalist game because their whole raison d'etre depend on stirring the pot, and without the pot being stirred they can't collect fat pensions and salaries paid for by the rest of us.
This event should have been about good vibes, good beer, and maybe... I dunno... scantily clad women (preferably French).
