I think he is referring to benching with a pronated grip without wrapping the thumb around the bard.

if you have a controlled suicide grip with good spotters, you can lift more at you transfer mass in a more efficient manner to the elbow with a more vertical wrist/arm line.

Myself? I would sooner just lift slightly less. My peepee is big enough

I really don't know why one would not wrap the thumb.
If anyone sees and big benchers give advice they always mention getting a tight grip on the bar to activate more forearm and triceps.

Kinda like a deathgrip on the sausage.

The first thing I learned when I was getting trained in the pen was the grip and how important it was to save you from injury, thet one guy had a BAD spotter also. I love the smith machine when it gets heavy just for that reason.
