I've seen alot of posts lately about bikes and stuff. So I have to ask. How the hell do you guys afford it?
What I mean is the insurance. I'm 22 and was quoted $7000 a year on a CBR600, which is straight up nuts. Yes I'm a newbie rider. I've had dirt bikes in the past so I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to bikes. Does insurance vary from province to province? I'm in Ontario if that makes a difference.

.........7 g's **** me bro!!!!
I've had bikes all my life, my first street bike when I turned 16 was a 400 Honda Hawk that I remember cost me $1400 per yr full coverage, I'm now 36 and my Hog costs me $500 per 6 mths full coverage. In Ab I know it goes by the cc's of a bike, IE the more cc's the more they charge you and my Hog is a 1540cc.

Easy, I started with a small bike (read 1984 yamaha xj400), and upgraded slowly. Back then when I got my license we didn't have the graduated system, and once you got past the beginners stage, it was shitty til you hit 25 or got hitched. I paid 1400 a year in 1988, but minimum wage was just rolling over 3 bucks.
I got my bike under my dad's insurance. I had a buddy who rode without insurance.

I was thinking about doing that. Then I found out it's a $5000 fine and got scared lol.

5 large plus you get to go to facility for both your bike and your car insurance.

So I guess I'm waiting till I'm 25 then. Dammit I really want a bike too. A dude at work was saying that all crotch rockets are "black listed" until they are 20 years old. Not sure if it's true or not.

I'd take a harley nightrod special but I can't afford it.
I like the look of all those bikes, you know, gsxr,zx10's,r6,r1,cbr's that's what I want. Plus I want to mod it out.

I got quotes of $4000-6000 before I called State Farm. As long as your record is clean you'll be good to go.

gicantor,
Its not going to be much better. Any breaks you get will come from taking the M2 course and passing. I'd wait until you pass the course and get your M2 issued. You'll save some $$ and next year take the M course and you'll save a bit more. From the insurance side of things, you need to get over 25 and/or married before you become a lower risk.

State Farm in Ontario rates by CC not type of bike. So a 600CC superbike will cost you less than 1000cc + couch on wheels.
If you're under 25 you will probably get your best deal from State Farm. Up your deductables to $1000 for fire/theft and $2000 for the other.
When I was 22 I was paying $170CAD / month for a 750 GSXR value of $15,000 through state Farm ( not that bad )
When I turned 25 it dropped immediately to $80 a month.
Good luck

Good luckYes state farm is the best for bikes but you have to insure your car with them too to get those rates. And you have to have a clean driving record for them to insure you

My first and only bike was a 650 nighthawk. It cost me $500.00. I bought it from a fellow who had fallen off of it and didn't want to get back on. I'm pretty sure that insurance for the season cost me about $200. Does this date me at all?

ok so im assuming you haven't taken any type of rider training. otherwise the insurance would be half. so try cecking out OMSA Ontario Motorcycle Safety Association, they have the authority to liscense you on behalf of the MTO.
http://www.rideomsa.com/
they are in the Cambridge Kitchener Area.
thsi type of course gives invaluable life lessons and reduces your insurance by a huge margin.
ando yourself a favor, Get a reasonable ride for now A CBR600 is like taking 2000mg Test per/week and 100mg of Anadrol ED and 100mg of Tren ed for your first cycle. Ease into it my friend! get some years of experience behind you then get the big boys toys. a 750Katana is cheap to buy since they stopped making them a couple years ago. lots of fun and plenty fast enough. if your looking to be doing wheelies and stopies well forget it, come over to my house and I'll just give you one of my guns we'll go for a walk in the back acrage and we can save you the insurance money altogether. as well it'll be the fastes thing you ever did see lol. jk
and Yes there is a Sur Charge on all R Class motorcycles. Try insuring a Hyabusa this year and see what happens.
once you have a couple years riding you can get better rates from Dalton Timmis Insurance.

With the CBR, it all boils down to wheatyher you get the racing serie, or the regular one-
My fiancee and I are both getting the CBRs.
I am 34 and have the cleanest record of all...and I am also going to be taking the course, it will be worth the 500 bucks.
I am sure my credibility as a top notch, top dog driver will come into play.
Drivign any motorized vehicle without a license is a serious offence...I personally advise against it no matter what the circumstances are!! Too many negative consequenses to take into consideration fellas :)

Crotch rockets are low cost to insure compared to Harleys. I am accident and "ticket free" and pay $2300 per yr. on my Hog.
Shop around, state farm is cheapest that I found for new riders.

Manitoba 1340cc is 1700.00/yr and ya for that $$ ride with snow on the ground!
We have a neat little loophole here in our helmet law,why do you think I live here?

When I get quotes I do put down I have had rider training. Those rates I posted are with rider training checked off.
To be honest, I don't have ANY licensing for motorcycles. I'm just trying to get a feel for the insurance, so far I'm not impressed.

Custom bikes, just like custom cars are pretty cheap to insure... most owners are mature, don't drive like lunatics and are very cautious with thier toys...
Harleys (and clones) arenot really known for thier high speeds... I know there are some big CI aftermarket motors making over 100RWHP, but for the most part they are 35HP noise makers :yeah

Man I thought insurance in Alberta sucks, costs me $6200.00 /yr to Insure my Rx7, Supra and my Sunfire, and I am 23 with an accident, 2 speending tickets and a stop sign violation... also the Rx7 is RHD and modified.

.... i insured my bike for more than $60,000 below replacement value and it still cost me $1200 for 6 months and i have road star rating(40% disc with ICBC). i did a portion of it through a private company as it was cheaper.
my noise maker has the horsepower to back up the bark.
