I was reading some oldschool bodybuilding stuff and they mentioned doing these with a special breathing technique for ribcage expansion.

Well if it is, its a pretty shitty one because it works my chest more than anything. There are far better lat workouts than this.

Thank you for stating the obvious, I just like to change it up a bit in the gym once in while.
Another failed atempt for BritishColumbian making a thread. I will make a decent thread eventually, I'm just practicing.

This isnt a forgotten exercise for me, I do them all the time, picked it out of Arnolds encylopedia of bodybuilding back like 20 years ago, although he hailed it as a rib cage expansion movement, it does hit the pec muscles mostly, but the lats do assist a little, good thread BC its nice to hear Im not the only one in the world that still does these. (just the only one in my gym)

lol, you need to study your anatomy more. the only time you use your chest in this workout is when your have the bar or dumbell above the chest. As for the following the Arnold book, that is way out of date bro, there are far more better and efficent science based training programs out there. Also , ask Dorian Yates what his favorite back exercise is for hitting the lats

If you have found anything that that would falsify this information, I would appreciate the new knowledge.

One thing I have learned through reading and experience, not just dreaming up stuff in my head mind you, is that by using a barbell you can flare your elbows out more which puts the lats in a more favorable position leverage wise, however common sense through the study of anatomy dictates that with the arms straight over your head, which would be easyier accomplished using a dumbell, your pectoralis now is in a better position to move the weight. Mind you this all changes when you are standing up, as resistance through ROM changes significantly.
Whats funny is BC says "my chest gets a great workout from dumbell pullovers, I really feel it", then someone basically says "no you dont!" like anyone really knows how he feels after he does this exercise.
I must be one of the very few people that weight trains that is still learning.

True. I find I get more pump in my lats than on my chest doing this.

With a grip that close and with the weight light enough theoretically you could focus on the pec minor with this exercise. Any grip that is wider or heavy weight and it's a lat exercise (a pretty good one, too, IMO).

it works the lats my friend. Your origin of your pecs is from your sternum / clavicle and your insertion is your bicipital groove of your humerus. therefore, movements consisting of horizontal abduction of the arm would work your chest.
this on the other hand is like the straight arm pulldown exercise, which isolates your lats..

the pain is probably coming from over stretching of the pec muscle when your arm is fully up behind your head.

I use these often to bookend my back workouts...I use a dumbell and i definitely feel these in the lats...i make sure to let that dumbell go back far enough to get a deep stretch in my lats...great lat exercise IMO if done correctly. Mind/muscle connection is what it's all about...

Try doing the pullovers on a swiss ball. Much more comfortable.

Love doing these for lats. My gym actually has a pullover machine which I throw in every so often. I also like putting a wide bar on a high pulley and doing them that way. Just to change it up some.
It's not a horrible idea to do these during chest day either though, it does provide a great stretch on the chest muscle.
