View Full Version : dull pins
Every so often I find a dull pin in my supply. This morning I got one and had to push so hard just to break the skin that the needle was bending.... grrr....

what brand do you use, maybe it's from to many pokes in that particular area??
nope, not from too many pokes, just get the odd dull one, maybe 1 or 2 out of 100 do this. I can tell when I get dull one, because it doesn't want to break the skin and the needle just bends, until the skin finally gives way and then it sinks in fast because of the pressure I have on it. just an annoyance really. Also had it happen with a few brands over the years.
I have similar issue with BD 25g
I bought Terumo at Jean Coutu before and it was completely painless
Couldn't feel the needle breaking the skin. They now want a script to buy them, sux.

lol that sucks, instead of forcing it in just switch the pins again.

my first shot ever was terumo 25g 1". I was so scared. It went in without any pain. Those BD are so painfull for quads :(
I know what you mean...the "crunch" feeling when you push the needle

Interesting, I've never had any issue with the consistency of needles.
I get mine from a needle exchange and the labels change over the years, but I think they're just BD precision glide every time.
Always sharp.

I have a mixture of both BD and Terumo, and find one is not better than the other. I've had dulls with BD, and with Terumo.

when I draw down from a bottle or bottle's I always replace the one I've drawn with, this ensures a new sharp every time, you can buy the neddle part seperate so less waste.

I've had a couple that were harder than usual to get in always figured it was from taking the plastic cap off wrong and dulling the tip that way. Only ever used BD's tho, not like it really hurts alot when you are using 25's so I never cared much.

Gentlemen! I really don't know what where to start on this subject. You are never going to find a needle that has come from either BD or any other manufacturer that is dull. I can't even bgin to think of the 100% inspection and testing methods that these LEGITIMATE pharmacuticles manufacturers are held under. The Research and developement that has gone into providing sterile sharp and consistant product would boggle the laymans mind. Capability studies, PPAP's, Anual Action Plans, PFMEA's the quality tools are truly endless.
so having said that, it is something you are doing that is causing this "dull pin" did you.....
1.) replace the tip after drawing?
2.) did you pull the cap without touching the sides of the cap?
3.) did you stretch the skin? easier to pearce tight selephane as appose to a limp plastic bag.
Look i'm not saying you did something wrong, I am saying that if a dull pin was somehow missed by all the Quality Controls, automated systems and extreme methods of checking and verifications, it is astronomically impossible to think of the odds that all 6 in a million pins reached 4 of you guys on this board.
this is all just my opion agree or not.

Maybe I'm just lucky to have never experienced a dull needle.
I change the tips after drawing the oil, but I assumed that was implied.

i'm guessing you havent experienced this:), and isnt it 'astronomically' possible that the QC works within a range and the odd pin comes out in the lower range.

I've had a couple dull ones. Aside from the one time where it was literally my last pin I've just replaced it. If it doesn't break the skin easily, or causes pain while doing so I just swap pins. Normally they're fine for 1 stopper poke and 1 skin poke.

Also, when you are pinning make sure you are doing it at the correct angle. The needle points are triangular so you have to go in on the sharp end.

I have experienced a "hard to push" pin, I attribute that to a hard skin area. could be an old pimple and scar tissue from that. or over the last 15 years of pinning i've i've created some scar tissue myself, loose skin. my shakiness. etc.....
as far as being on the lower range. certainly if we were talking about tolerance and range, but were not, we are talking about sharp v. dull. and it is not even something that is left for interpretation. it is precision ground and verified with the highest of vision management systems, (camera's) allowing a dull pin to go through and be qualified is, well beyond comprehension to think they would allow it.
I do have many years experince in Quality Management Systems and Quality Control Techniques and so I have the utmost assurance that there is in no way a system taht would allow dull pins go through.
again, trust what i'm saying or don't. but think about this, what if they allow un-sterile pins next time? oh maybe one dropped on the floor and someone just picked it up and put it back on the assembly line. what if they let their workers walk around without full PPE and sanitary hair nets and the next pin you open has little Wanita the worker's hair in it. these processes are fully automated and taken away from human judgement and handling, just to protect you the end user.

another good point.....(no pun intended)..you could be rubbing/cutting it into your skin as appose to pearcing straight in.

It's actually quite easy to try and pin it 'flush' on the needle. It usually happens when you're pinning glutes b/c you think you've got it going at a 90degree angle but you really aren't. Before you swap needles, wiggle the angle a bit and see if that's the case.

most clinics will give out free needles, if you live in canada i guarantee theres a few places you can get pins and drts, and sterile water and sharps containers and wipes all for free.
you don't need to suffer, it's not that big of a deal, hell send a local stoner to pick that shit up., i used to for two roomates that poked bad drugs

I had some Redi-jet 50mg Deca in a glass plunger set up with a 1' 18g.They came single foil wrapped right from the pharmacy while on a extended trip to Mexico.Ya this was back in the day but my point is even a shrap 18g can refuse to break the skin and when it does it feels like a pencil, one of the old red fat ones you used in grade 1.

18g,, sweet jesus! why not try to poke with a straw instead?
just kidding brother.
listen i'm not saying it's impossible! i'm saying it's almost impossible and to consider the possibility that maybe it's something we are doing during the process. angle of poke. rubbing, not poking. hitting the side of the cap. etc. the list is truly endless

Hitting the sides of the cap was one of the first things I considered when I kept getting painful shots.
I always made sure to get the right angle, stretch the skin, pull the needle out slowly from the cap being sure not to hit the sides... and I still had problems. Perhaps a bad batch was bought by someone and sold on eBay (where I bought mine). All I know is I'd go to poke and the damn thing wouldn't want to go in. I gave up swapping for new needles after a while because it kept happening and just jabbed it in, cringing the whole time from the pain.
These were BD, 25G 1.5"
I'm trying Terumo next time.
