What works for you when it comes to post workout nutrition?
Do you do the standard protocol of consuming high GI carbs along with fast digesting protein immediately after, and then waiting an hour to consume low GI carbs and slower digesting proteins?
Or do you prefer to skip the high GI carbs all together and just consume sweet potatoes/oats/rice/etc and chicken/egg whites/etc immediately after exercise?
For years I was an advocate of the first protocol however now I usually blend oats, a banana, pasturized egg whites, and whey post workout and drink that. Then a couple of hours later I will usually have a pro/fat meal and go to bed. This method seems to help keep my leaner but now I am seconding guessing myself.
Am I robbing my body of anabolism by not consuming high GI carbs PWO and not consuming carbs PPWO?
What method do you employ?

There is a thread about this topic, on this very same page...

Im a high GI guy..80-100 grams of dextrose with 40 grams of whey after my workout.I drink half right away, then wait 15 mns then drink the other half
I have heard of others who used your second method and swear by it.Their reasoning is if they eat IMMEDIATLEY after their workout, the food will enter their body in that 1hour window of opportunity anyways.
I have never tried it though and probably wont either. If ever i do try it,(if)it would be during a diet where i would try to limit my insulin spike which would help me be more insulin sensitive later

here's a question for all of you who worry about pre and post workout nutrition.
There are probably 10 or more things a person should be doing to maximize their training effort and potential. How many of you are doing these things? How many have their diet completely nailed down, know how much gear it takes for them to grow, is sleeping the amount they should, know what kind of training and exercises their body responds to, etc etc etc.
Who is doing 8 out of 10? Those of you are aren't then don't worry about pre or post workout nutrition. Just eat, sleep and train and when you get advanced enough you can worry about the other factors which can take you to the next level because getting your post workout shake in will mean jack shit if you don't have your nutrition and training 100% nailed

You are absolutley right..but.let me just say this:PWO nutrtion is the most important meal of the day.Of course preworkout and in the morning are as well, but doesnt top PWO.With that being said One can have a 'perfect' diet, one can have a 'fair' diet..and one can have a 'sloppy, mediocre' diet.
I would say many who are pretty much devoted have a FAIR diet.Im speaking about the average Joe who is training hard for the beach and for himself. To me,someone who is on a 'fair' diet NEEDS a proper PWO shake in order to make him get the gains he needs.Of course this does not beat the 'perfect' diet ,but at least he will make up for most of it by taking in a well thought of PWO shake. The one with the shitty diet...well..he wont go too far for sure

Theres a good article in teh new MD about pre/post workout nutrition and its importance, I think it might have been in Justin Harris' new column. You guys should give it a read and it explains a few things that may have been unsure to you before. There are some studies in it too.

I second that motion, why overcomplicate things, take some carbs before and after with a little protein done and done, yes pwo is the important meal, but at the same time it not like immedietly post work out your body is completely drained of all of its nutrients, and if you waste one valuable second all of the mass you could have gained is gone! gone! oh the humanity! Your stomach takes between 2 and 5 hours to empty itself thats before it enters the small intestine and you actually begin to be able to use any of the food that you ate, so just do the math, as long as you are eating regularly throughout the day you arent going to be nutrient depraved at any point in the day in my opinion.

dont think i could have said it better myself. but assuming he has other things in check, id say 50 grams protein, 30 grams carbs in water after a workout, then an hour later a good solid food meal. I grow on that.
