I was listening to the news this morning on CBC, and also read about it on the newspaper.
So far it seems to be a very mild situation...the gov does not want to alarm anybody at all.
4 people reported the sickess in Ontario, after returning from Mexico---but seem to be doing VERY well.

It is funny how CBC stated that they advised against hitting the resorts in Mexico....I wonder how that is going to affect airline ticket sales, bookings, and so one.

many airlines are not flying to mexico at this time

it is somewhat concerning, but like you said B2J, mild.

There is still risk, and currently I have my sister, brother in law, and step niece (3 yo) in Mexico, as well as a special someone.

I would be lying if I said I was not worried, even though the risk is minor

I agree!! Maybe posting some pics of her here on this thread will also help us, help you with better advice.:bday

In the mean time, monitor her well, but It would not hurt if she went for a check up---I am sure she'd get priority at the clinics.

I'm with the Canadian Missionary Alliance Church and just got an email this morning from missionaries that live in Mexico. Apparently it's like a scene out of a science fiction movie, the streets of the worlds second largest city are almost empty. Shops have closed and so have schools and churches, some drive thru's remain open. They have suffered some minor earthquakes recently and one just a couple of days ago that is not helping matters down there. We are praying for them and hope this virus doesn't explode.

WHO has been eagerly awaiting a pandemic forever now to justify their existence. Remember the last pandemics we were supposed to have. I think the asian bird flu was the last one. Fell flat. They probably get a bunch of gov't funding and need to justify the money they need cause they'll save the world.

Reality is if it's a real pandemic, their ain't shit they can do. But everyone needs to justify their existence on this planet and that's how they do it.

Don't forget, this is also the perfect distraction from what's happening with the economy. A whole 250 people got sick. And only 1 died that wasn't from Mexico. WOW, I'm going to live in a cave now.

waderow
01-05-2009, 10:35 AM
I agree 99%. I still get concerned that there could be some possibility that this bug, that is without a doubt wide spread now, could have some ability to become more fatal via mutation.

spitfire
01-05-2009, 10:45 AM
Yes it is possible. Almost any virus can do that. But to do what the news and WHO is doing, is downright wrong. They are fearmongering and there are companies and news networks making a mint from this. It's irresponsible imo. They should have a guideline for this. If the kill rate is over x % then it's serious. Besides the mexico deaths, there is only 1 death. And if you watch the video from one of the posts, the guys says it's mostly because their have probably been much more cases than reported in mexico, that's why the deaths. It's only because some people died that they found out the swine flu was out there.

I say live your lives normal and stop letting the media and gov't control your lives. They are pulling the blanket over everyone's eyes right now with this new distraction so you won't realize we're all ****ed until it's too late. I'm waiting for the reports to see how many lost jobs in April in Canada. It's going to get interesting soon.

heres a clip from the WHO website...

No rationale for travel restrictions
1 May 2009 -- WHO is not recommending travel restrictions related to the outbreak of the influenza A(H1N1) virus. Today, international travel moves rapidly, with large numbers of individuals visiting various parts of the world. Limiting travel and imposing travel restrictions would have very little effect on stopping the virus from spreading, but would be highly disruptive to the global community.

Influenza A(H1N1) has already been confirmed in many parts of the world. The focus now is on minimizing the impact of the virus through the rapid identification of cases and providing patients with appropriate medical care, rather than on stopping its spread internationally. Furthermore, although identifying the signs and symptoms of influenza in travellers can be an effective monitoring technique, it is not effective in reducing the spread of influenza as the virus can be transmitted from person to person before the onset of symptoms. Scientific research based on mathematical modelling indicates that restricting travel will be of limited or no benefit in stopping the spread of disease. Historical records of previous influenza pandemics, as well as experience with SARS, have validated this point.

Travellers can protect themselves and others by following simple recommendations related to travel aimed at preventing the spread of infection. Individuals who are ill should delay travel plans and returning travellers who fall ill should seek appropriate medical care. These recommendations are prudent measures which can limit the spread of many communicable diseases and not only influenza A(H1N1).

From WHO

1 May 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve. As of 19:00 GMT, 1 May 2009, 13 countries have officially reported 365 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

The United States Government has reported 141 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 156 confirmed human cases of infection, including nine deaths.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (34), China, Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region (1), Denmark (1), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (8).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

Gov't and media is to blame for all this. They should be held accountable for their actions after all this is over.

A simple, it's better safe than sorry motto just doesn't cut it anymore for me. It's irresponsible because after the next ten times this happens, it'll be a cry wolf feeling and if something is very serious one day, no one might take it seriously until it's too late.

I was watching the news and this flu virus seems to mutate over relatively short periods of time. I kind of wonder if all flu viruses behave similarly and they just notice it with this one because it is under the microscope.

The only area of concern I can see is if a relatively mild strain has the potential to mutate into something that is more harmful and/or more easily transfered between hosts.

I think it's probably one of two things happening.

1. There are a lot of infected people in Mexico so the actual mortality rate is lower than what it seems. Also that a lot of these people are already somewhat immune compromised and lack proper nutrition and healthcare.

Or

2. There are strains of this virus that are more virulent and are associated with a higher mortality rate. Might also be some combination of the two.

I know of at least one person who had their business trip cancelled (within Ontario) because of company policy regarding swine flue. So the whole thing is definitely being blown out of preportion.

kloan
02-05-2009, 01:59 AM
It's a pretty vicious cycle. By the time pharmaceutical companies have the latest flu vaccine, the virus has already mutated into something resistant.

Viruses have, and always will be, a step ahead of the pharmaceuticals.. until people stop relying on antibiotics to fight these infections, they're only going to get worse. Much worse.

spitfire
02-05-2009, 03:06 AM
I'm not one running out to get a flu shot or whatever pill. Actually I've never gotten a flu shot in my life. Took antibiotics only one time after an operation. I get a cold or flu maybe once every year or year and a half. There are people that die after taking a flu shot. I just don't understand it. Seems all like a gimmick to me.

The reason the WHO is somewhat panicking is because these events mimic the Spanish flu to the ****ing letter.

Back then, the flu also originated as a mild strain around March with low mortality and not a crazy fast spread then by October it mutated and had the largest kill rate of any flue ever recorded.

This flu is unfolding with identical events.
