And I am not just saying this because I own a couple of gyms... Within the last 2 weeks I got these 4 flyers in the mail... What a total scam... They say $8 per month and you can pay as you go... and you get a free cruise...
I called the Pickering club just for the heck of it... told them who I was and said I was curious to see what the month to month rate is... I was straight up, did not pretend to be a BS customer and said I was doing some market research... they refused to tell me the price...
It's really not right the way these guys operate... back in 2007 Premiere was fined 200G's for misleading advertising...
Premier Fitness Clubs has agreed to pay a $200,000 penalty and correct several advertisements as part of a settlement with the federal Competition Bureau.

Two years before that, Goodlife was fined $75,000 for the same thing...
The Competition Tribunal says GoodLife Fitness Clubs Inc. has agreed to a $75,000 penalty and a corrective notice after consumers complained of misleading advertising

I hope Extreme is next on the list... they deserve a bigger fine than Premiere got 2 years ago as they are giving the entire Fitness Industry a bad name!

All of those places are scams. Hell when I worked as a janitor at a place in pickering I remember the bosses would try to take money out of accounts that were long cancelled.
I try to tell people who come rushing to me with what they think is the deal of the century...but people dont get that theses places dont give a shit about you, and wish you would sign up and never ****ing come back.
Hell even when I signed up with you I was totally on the defence trying to figure out what your catch was.

I went to the good life in my town just to check it out, and i asked the guy behind the counter how much it is for a year or for a month.
he told me i would have to wait for the manager to be in, he did not want to tell me a price, i thought that was ****ed up. so i never went there again.

If what they are doing is not considered misleading advertising, I don't know what the heck is!

There is nothing Extreme about "Extreme Fitness".
I don't want to sound rude but the ones I have been to are either full of queers or immigrants.

FWIW, just about every gym I've called refused to tell me their prices over the phone. They always insist on going in... they ask for my name, want to set up an appointment... they're pushy mother****ers and get even more annoying if you actually go in.
I'd much rather deal with smaller privately owned gyms and risk the chance of it closing.

$96/month?? OMFG is that ever a rip off. I would never pay more than $50/month... and I better be getting a damn nice gym for that. Gyms are waaayyyy overpriced these days.

The equipment is mostly fine, the posers suck but overall is a decent gym.

I have no issue with them charging $96 a month... the thing that pisses me off is they are advertising like mad with $8 a month ads!!!
Funny thing is the it's 12 X the actual advertised price... that's F-cked up!

This is why independant gyms are the way to go.
I got caught in a Premier scam a long time ago when I was 17.
I told him:
"buddy this place is a scam, Im cancelling my membership."
He literally said:
"kid, your not going anywhere, you signed a contract for a year so suck it up"
I said: "I was 17 when I signed, if you were such crooks here maybe you would have noticed that"
He said: "$@#$*" True story.
Glad they got what they deserve.

Wow $96 a month is more than I pay for memberships at two different gyms (golds + clubfit) I cant believe anyone would fall for that.
Wish we had some good quality smaller gyms but it seems like the whole town is dominated by the big chains from my experience.

you cant even sign a legally binding contract as a minor. that guy had ZERO legal legs to stand on if you wanted to back out of that contract. premier is a joke though, i know your pain.

Exactly, buddys main concern was just signing as many contracts as possible. He shit when I showed him my age. Yea premier is a joke, I try my best to sway people from ever signing up with them.

Used to be $120 at my given club
The clientele there used to be really wealthy, now the whole thing is going down

If it was a private gym with high end equipment and a lower # of members, it'd be worth it.
But the chain gyms just sign up as many people as they can but rarely offer something that's worth that kind of price.

You can get an $8 membership and pay as you go, but it's only for a month or two then expect to pay something crazy per month. That's the upsell - commit for a year and pay less overall.
Extreme's sales system is a juggernaught - one of the best in the business if you're an employee. Unfortuneately, those on the other end of it may get trampled if they are not aware of what's going on.

One of the best in the business?
I guess it depends how you look at it... I have hired a couple former Extreme people and they hated the atmosphere... I even have a couple Extreme employees that workout at my clubs as they can not stand the 'Extreme Environment'...
In terms of the $8 per month... they will not sign you up without some sort of auto payment info... They will not let people sign up with $8 cash looking to join for a month...

I should clarify in that the systems and processes in place at Extreme to sell memberships/training are very very solid. They rarely miss an opportunity to close business. If you are the type of person that doesn't like to get micro managd then Extreme is not a very fun place to work. I can see how many people are turned off by the atmosphere.
You are correct about the auto payment. Extreme lives and dies by PAP.

Same here. I've spent about $4000 on everthing and I plan never to set foot in one of those gyms.
