I made this chili recipie on Monday and loved it. The recipie itself makes a HUGE batch yielding 10 portions. I just cut everything in two and it makes 5 big portions. Break out the beano, because it will cause some rancid gas. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

4 lbs extra lean ground beef (96%)
4 cans kidney beans (15.5 oz per can), drained and rinsed
2 large onions, chopped
2 large tomatoes, chopped
1 lb carrots, peeled and sliced
4 bell peppers — 1 green, 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 orange, cut into 1/2-inch squares
6 cloves garlic, chopped
Two 46-fl oz bottles V8 vegetable juice, spicy hot
Cashew meal

Spices:

4 tbsp chili powder, 1 tsp cumin, 2 tsp paprika, 1 tsp celery seed, 1 tsp fresh ground pepper (for a quicker version, you can use 3 packages chili seasonings mix, but it won't be quite the same!)

Cooking Instructions:

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef, one pound at a time, over high heat together with the garlic and onions. If your skillet is large enough (i.e., a wok), you can brown the beef all at once to save time. On the last batch, add the spices after the beef is browned and continue frying for another couple of minutes.

Add the browned beef to a very large pot with a lid, and then add the beans, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, and V8 juice. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer. To make the cashew meal, process the cashews in a blender in short bursts, until a grainy meal is formed. Don't process for too long or you'll have cashew butter. Stir in the cashew meal, cover, and simmer for an additional 30 minutes. Makes 10 servings

Didn`t put any in. Apparantly the cashews are tricky to do as. A few were saying it just turns into butter. The cashews are said to be good to thicken up the chili. Also forgot the garlic cloves. But still tastes great, Berardi has some awsome recipies. Nice change from chicken cooked in Kraft BBQ sauce and rice seasoned with herbamare salt.

Not sure if there`s a weed joke there... Just take a the scooper and evenly put it in 5 tupperwear containers. To me it was about 5 scoops per container. It did fill a very big bowl yesterday, but it`s a big wide based soup bowls. Had a hard time finishing it but it was close to my second post workout meal because I had to leave early for work, and ate 2 pieces of toast with it. Toast goes so well with chili. I feel like eating another portion right now but 3 days in a row is pushing it for my stomach. The gas is real bad and stank up my co workers nice and good last night. Ha ha ha...

I LOVE Berardi's chili. Beef is pretty damned expensive over here though. I might have to experiment with some kind of pork and soy-bean chili substitute when the craving gets too bad. I can probably get canned black beans over here somewhere, those are great in chili.

I've been doing this for a long time but I use canned tomatoes...not that V8 juice shit. Use kidney + black beans together for variety.

After a while, you get used to the beans and there's not that much gas.

Thanks for the recipie!

Made this last night and it was delicious! I ground up about 200g of cashews and it really made a difference in the taste and texture. I also added about a half bottle of tabasco :) yummy

^^^ I think it`s to increase the fats in the chili and thickness texture wise. Or for a low carb person would not put in the beans, but cashews to make a protein+fat meal hence cashew meal.

here's something I learned by making the mistake; DO NOT use hanabero chilis in stead of regular chili

yah those habaneros are ****ing brutal

for the cashew meal, just pulverize them in the bag before you open it.

I`ve read what you eat in a day (you`re a true warrior to pound down that much real food). I can`t even eat this stuff 2 days in a row. But that much chili? The recipie I listed, you would eat in a whole day! It`s a good thing we can`t smell your nastyness through the computer screen, c`ause this site would have one member. You! I`m guessing you`re single c`ause no woman with a normal sense of smell could never live with the type of gas 1.5 to 2 kg of chili a day must produce.

I wonder what traumatizes the women we date the most. The constant need for sex or all the farting we do.l

What is "cashew meal"...just ground up cashews?
If so, how many grams of it?

Maybe if you go to t-nation you can find that answer. Just use the search button and enter Berardi chili. Or maybe go on his site johnberardi.com

I went to look on t-nation and someone said the amount of cashews was a half cup.

Perhaps you should edit your original post Ritch with the updated information =)

And having this moved to the Recipes section wouldn't be such a bad idea either, my 2c.

1/2 cup of cashews makes sense as far as fat content per serving goes. Update my post? Why? It was simply me posting a recepie. Does it mean I have the responsibility of knowing and answering every question related to it? lol...

Good idea on moving it to the recipie section. So why don`t you?
