im wondering, my traps respond well to barbell shrugs...
im getting heavy enough that my grip is starting to fail. Will using an over under grip (like how i do when i deadlift) effect how my traps grow? id hate to have one bigger than the other
Why not try using straps? They're very helpful on those last reps where your grip is the deciding factor.

I'd say yes.
When you deadlift, your lats are not being used as prime movers, therefore the fiber recruitment low and the development will be nill (depends of what type of dead you do you can get a lot of rhomboids and mid traps).
When you shrug the upper traps are the prime movers, different grips will recruit different muscle fibers leading to different grow on each side unless you switch the grips back and forth (over/under) every set.
I'd tell you to add straps at the last few sets wen your grip starts to go.
Even though they are helpful tools the more you use straps longer it will take for your grip strength to develop.

Then stick to double overhand and do singles when your grip starts to fail.

I would suggest using straps. The OU is a powerlifting grip used to prevent bar spin and because you cannot use straps in competition. In BB you arent training grip and the use of straps is allowed. For better and more balanced development it is better to have both hands facing the same way....as well the OU puts alot of strain on the biceps tendon on the underhand grip hand.

I'd say do timed holds for grip on a whole seprate day. Keep in mind grip is one of the hardest things to train and especially recover from. I compete in powerlifting and strongman and train grip once a week, the rest of the time I use straps... a lot of guys I know that tried training grip frequently found it eventualyl went backwards... once a week is the mex most ppl can handle.
And then for trap development, definately use straps.
Then u should be set.
I definately agree with all the guys that are saying switch OU grip between hands to keep it even. Even though you might never potentially see a noticeable difference. I believe it is important to stay symmetrical with your training or you could potentially build imbalances, some of which you might never be able to see.
Just a Praetorian said about how the underhand grip places more stress on your biceps and obviously biceps tendon.....That would be my main concern with constantly using the same OU each and every set......I've seen someone strain their biceps tendon as a result of using the same OU grip each set.....

I often have this problem as well, and have given in to getting straps and learning how to use them....
Not to hijack the thread but I'd like to ask..
Rhinobolt10: Could you give some examples of things you may do for grip training that 1 day/week? thanks greatly appreciated...

If your working out for aesthetic purposes I see no reason to not use straps, no point limiting the development of your traps because your grip is weak just means you should consider adding some grip/forearm work somewhere in your program maybe ab day or something. I personally don't use mixed grip for anything anymore since once your weights get up there its just not worth the risk to your biceps health if your not competing.
