So I am leaving Costco as usual. There is a big line and I am in a hurry. So I simply head out the door and not line up with the rest of the drones. Of course I am asked to stop.
This conversation follows....
Me: "Did I do something wrong".
Them:"No"
Me: "Well I will be on my way then"
Them: We need to check your reciept
Me: Why, Do you think I stole something?
Them: No, We check everyone's receipt
Me: "I do not care what others agree to. Why are you asking to see my receipt"
Them: "Like I said we check everyone's receipt"
Me: If you can not give me a valid reason why you are stopping me and demanding to see my receipt I will be on my way.
Them: *silence*
Me: Have a good day
I expected some manager to come after me because the Customer Service desk was watching the incident. But, no one came out.
If they wish to revoke my membership because I do not subject myself to being visually frisked they are welcome to do so. I am no longer waiting in line to exit.
P.S. I am not on Tren ;)

Ya..it's pretty demeaning to say that you may actually be stealing something, where is the trust. Do you know if by law they are actually allowed to do that?
RagingRandy
28-03-2009, 04:54 PM
^^^^I suspect they have no legal right to do so unless they have suspicion of misconduct, such as actually catching you stealing something. Then they hold you until the cops get there.
I believe this is just done because people allow it to be done.
Question...How could they stop me? If they tried physically I would claim assault. I would personally call the cops. I am sure Costco does not want this kind of attention.

I was at Costco they were pushing a VIP membership on us to a point of arguing with us on why we should buy it..I couldnt believe it after telling them no more than once..You used to be able to go with a card holder if you were not one and go shopping..now they are getting to be pricks about it...

I have been to cosco on several occasions...but many years ago.
I am old school and would like to always follow fundementals, some as simple as:
I do not need to pay YOU a membership fee in order to shop at your stablishment. You don't extend my dollar any further than the guy across the stree (IGA, Loebs, my farm guy where I buy my meat, future shop, Mr Lube....you get the point).
Sure their prices in bulk are great, but who in the heck wants to buy 15 thousands bulb lights for 39.00? Or who wants to purchase 100 tubes colgate for 49.00?? (theoretical sums)
I am oppose to paying cosco for them to give me a membership, allowing me the right to shop with them. No thanks.
As for the revising of your receipt....I too always felt infringed upon, but (5 times at the most) the few times that |I visited the place, I simply overlooked at it.

Word. Real badass material here.
I'd love to see how you'd react to a CCRA agent auditing your taxes. Pretty sure you'd sit there and shut your mouth like a punk in jail who has buddy eyeing him...
I asked a friend who works there why they want to see your receipt and he said, that they have no cameras in the main store other than over the cashiers, so when people leave the store with an unchecked receipt, they can walk right back in and grab another item off the shelf, put it in their pocket, walk out and show the unmarked receipt if stopped again. He said that people doing this was a big problem in the states many years ago, so the company produced a policy to mark receipts as you leave.
Do they actually count your items in your cart and check em on the receipt?
I still think it is BS and I agree that I don't want to be stopped either. Iga, superstore, safeway, etc don't check your receipts. But, I guess they have you on camera.

Tell me do you park in the fire lane at the supermarkets when you need to run in and get something quick?

retarded post
not wanting to wait in line for someone to check a receipt for something you've already paid for and parking in a fire lane which could potentially cause a building to burn down, or at least, cause a huge inconvenience to firemen. i dont see the connection.

That is what I have been told as well but if that truly is the case the cashier can mark the receipt at the time of payment.

Not so great when you are only a couple peeps in the house but when there are 6 of us it def a good thing when it comes to the bulk food.
And the VIP membership is worth it as well, we get enough there that the membership pays for itself and we get a check back at the end of the year so essentially they are paying us to shop there.
As far as the original post goes if more people did it then they probly would stop the process and save everyone some time.

The other day I seen a fat head not only in the firelane but parked up on the curb with two wheels on the sidewalk between the signs, I imagine it was because he just couldnt wait to get in, like alot of people cant wait to get out.
If you cant wait for five minutes like every other "drone" then I feel you arent far from doing what I mentioned, retarded post? simply a question, nothing more, I wasnt trying to offend anyone.

Maybe if more people explained to management or customer service the inconvenience of this routine? as opposed to a select few doing whatever they please, it would take less time to change things if people spoke up.
I did not mean to offend, but if a line of people are waiting, who are you to barrel past them? bureaucracy will change things for everyone faster than anything.

well it did come across a little dickish. just because we refuse to abide by an asinine policy that treats their customers like suspects, doesn't mean we're ****ing douches (like the person who parked in a fire lane up on a curb)
ANYWAY, it's not just costco that does this.. future shop does it as well.. i've even seen it in best buy, and down here at fry's they make everyone line up so they can check their receipts as well.
that bit about not having any cameras is just bullshit. i haven't been to a costco in a while but in the electronics stores there are more cameras than i care to count, yet they insist on checking people's receipts.
it's not just a matter of 'not wanting to be a drone', it's somewhat insulting and in my opinion unnecessary. if i'm on my way out and someone happens to ask to see my receipt, i'll show them.. but i'm not waiting in line for that crap. i don't park in handicap spots, i don't park in front of fire hydrants or run over old ladies. waiting in line to leave a store is just stupid.

I looked into this years ago and here is Coscto's reasoning:
They check the receipts to make certain that you were not charged more than once for anything etc. They claimed it was to protect the buyer.

this is actually true! a year ago or so I had like 4 items in my cart. When they checked my receipt they noticed I was charged for 3 containers of orange juice at like $10/ea. Had they not checked I wouldn't have even noticed and been out $30.

I wouldn't eat their food. I ate some costco burgers at a neighbours party a while back. I never had burgers taste so ****ing bad. It's cheap for a reason. Then again I'm a foodie snob who eats organic where possible. Whole Foods and Cumbrae's are where I go. Pricey but you are what you eat. I've got 3 new york strips at home worth around $65 for dinner...yummy. plus some roasted veg and I'm all set. just no red wine, wife says no to tren and booze, oh well. gotta give up something.

Sure, even on a 2500sq home space can be limited---I call try to see the logic into the "purchase bulk" idea if there were at least 4 of us, but that is far from being the case at my house.
I agree that some of their bulk items are fantastic idea no doubt!!
In the end and no matter how you see it, the corporation IS successful...this fella won't be running to thier offices anytime soon to acquired a so-called membership card....nah thanks.
I love my over priced but top notch Farm Boy, for both my personal use and for my business...and love my grain fed meat, that I have been purchasing from the same guy for over 10 years now.

on the other hand, checking the receipt to see if there are any errors with the cashier is a compelling reason/argument and i concede that would make sense.. if it's true.

Anyone that would believe they are checking the receipt to make sure you got what you paid for.......Well, I have nice bridge for sale. I will even give you a receipt.
Given the choice....I will take the chance that I was not overcharge because I know I paid attention at the till. Thanks, but no thanks. I do not need your help.
As for the cop.....there is no need to change my line of questioning.

I don't have any problem with it... I don't go during peak hours and so I've never actually waited in line. I smile, say hello, and hand over my receipt. Generally they just ask me if I found everything, I say yes and they put their little mark on it and I'm on my way. I've never had them actually go through my cart.
Maybe I'm just better looking than all ya'll?!
