don cherry told O to cool down his goals wat you guys think??The tampa golie is arookie and shouldnt be taunted like that!!Holla
Ovechkin is the best thing to happen to the NHL in the last 10 years. He scores goals and fills seats. As soon as someone can do better than him, maybe then he will calm it down a bit. His celebrations are due largely in part to the fact that he generally LOVES to score goals. He is not taunting the other teams or showboating, like a NBA players do regularly after dropping a ball in a basket, he is celebrating the goal. He acts virtually the same way when his teammates score. I re-iterate, he is the best player in the world right now, and the NHL needs Alex O. Keep up the good work.

Actually, the NHL does not NEED Ovechkin. From a marketing perspective he is not very marketable. Ugly as hell, barely string together 2 english words, etc.
Talented player for sure but when Tavaras hits the league if he is remotely as good as his Junior play then he will surpass O for marketability in his first year.

**** that stupid retard Don Cherry. Ovechkin is an awesome player is he is not showboating, he`s just enjoying himself as he should. NBA and NFL players should tone down their celebrations, those guys are out of hand.

tavares is a good player, but he is no AO. You do know a lot about training and BB, but when it comes to hockey I might know what im talking about. You dont need to be attractive to be marketed as a pro athlete. Tavares is nowhere near the calibre that AO brings to the game. He is much smaller and plays a completely different style of hockey. AO is pure entertainment at its finest.

You may know hockey but hockey is not a sport it is a business and when is comes to marketing and seducing a public into buying a product looks, attitude and that's golden boy status has more of an impact than most realize. And, marketing is what I've spent the better part of 11 years doing. More than bodybuilding.
There is a reason why Crosby is considered the game's biggest star. And it sure isn't for his play as of late (injuries have hurt him). It is because he is a good looking, well spoken golden boy whose parents will outfit their kids in his gear because (right or wrong) he represents the kind of role model that parents want their kids to look up to
You can't say Tavares won't equal the caliber of AO until he steps in and puts some games under his belt at the NHL level.
I am not saying AO isn't pure talent. That is obvious and he is highly entertaining but so are clowns and bearded ladies...

Fair enough sir, but I also studied business / marketing my first run at post secondary. Im no expert but I have an excellent understanding of how they work hand in hand. Ovechkin didnt make as much of an impact in his draft year, because oh yeah, THERE WAS NO NHL SEASON THAT YEAR. Crosby was drafted to the penguins where he (and every other NHL broadcaster) wanted him to end up, under the wing of Mario Lemieux. Obviously that is going to attract more attention for the North American media as well as the Canadian audience. Since his induction into the NHL however Crosby has failed to outshine his european counterpart. Ovechkin scores more goals, throws more hits and fills more seats than anyone else in this league. Crosby receives more attention in Canada, because he is Canadian, and thats why you know who he is. If someone at his calibre had been drafted from europe he wouldnt have made nearly the impact with merchandising or endorsement deals. Canadians know and worship Crosby because he is Canadian. He has shown himself to be a winy little bitch in the NHL and thinks he should deserve the (dont you dare hit me) "gretzky treatment". Watch a capitals game and look in the stands at the SEA of red jerseys with the name OVY on the back. No other team has such a solid following for their NO.1 player. He is and will continue to be the (ugly) face of the NHL because of his ability, not his ethnicity or political pull in the NHL/NHLPA.

Or the Montreal Canadians. Whenever there is a match on CBC saturday nights and if the Canadians are playing, he dosen`t say jack shit about the game during his show. I watch the games on RDS in French now, the commentators are way better.

He is a superstar for sure. How many times shall I repeat that?
It's a good thing he doesn't face any bone crushers or he'd be laying on the ice more than celebrating goals. I still wish Scott Stevens was around... ;)

best clip of all. most of the players agree he should be able to celebrate as he is the best player in the world. there is even a remark about how he is the best marketing tool for the NHL.

Kids care if their hockey heros are handsome? When you stand out amongst a group of the best athletes in your sport you become a role model whether you want to or not.
Ovechkin dosent look ugly neither he looks like a hockey player.
Cherry should shut up and get some treatment for dementia, gretzky raised his stick for all but a few of his 800 + goals and the "cher" never said anything.

Well said. I think Ovechkin would do himself better to look at players like gretzky and lemieux, people who were more composed. However, AO is exactly what the commissioner had in mind when he thought up the "new nhl". AO is the new nhl. Gretzky and mario are the old nhl..... It comes down to what you like better. Cheer leaders, fast skating, high scoring games = new nhl, gritty, hard, intense, strategic= old nhl.

I hate the prick and hope someone fills him in good. It won't happen though , Cherry is wrong on this one. That idiot Jagr used to do the same on every goal (threw his glove in the air and aimed his stick at it like it was a rifle) he scored and no one ever took action.
Ovechkin is the most gifted player in the NHL but I can't stand his act. I don't
think it hurts the league nor do I think it helps the league. It's what it is - stupid IMO. Let the showboats in the NFL and NBA act like morons with the staged celebrations.
The league doesn't need excessive celebrations to sell the game in the USA because nothing anyone has ever done , outside of fighting, sells the game to the US public. Gretzky managed to have some effect but it wore off eventually. He did it with CLASS.

agree. plus we dont want this to turn into the NFL (NO FUN LEAGUE)
****ing Don Cherry stood up for Theo Fleury when he was riding his stick around and sliding on his knees across the ice. He used to complain that Russian players played with no emotion. Now he has aproblem with Ovi one Kenobee celebrating.
Shut your trap Cherry, you're a dinosaur who is no longer relevant.

Word to Big Bird Brah!!!
If he were North American (more importantly a good ole Canadian boy) he'd be made out to be the greatest thing to happen to the game since Gretzky (which I believe he may end up being).... since he is Russian.... He's a jerk and an idiot... or something to that effect....
I'm so sick of Cherry... He seems like a "good ole boy" to me... by that I mean he still believes that only white anglo-saxons belong in the NHL....
****! I"m so pissed still that I can't talk very coherently about it... and hockey's actually my least favourite sport.... lol
