Quinoa
Regarded as a sacred food by the Incas, quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) provides a wide range of vitamins and minerals. This supergrain seed contains more protein than most cereal grains (22 grams per one cup/250 millilitres uncooked quinoa) and is considered a complete protein because it contains all eight of the essential amino acids we need for tissue development.

Quinoa is higher in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, and lower in sodium compared with wheat, barley and corn. This gluten-free grain also receives an honourable mention for being low in saturated fat (one gram of fat per one cup/250 millilitres uncooked quinoa).

Dietary uses: Quinoa can be substituted for most hot cereals and is a good replacement for rice. Cook it like porridge, include it in casseroles or stews, or add it (steamed, toasted or baked) to soups, salads or desserts. You can also use ground quinoa in breads, cookies, puddings, muffins and pasta. It's available in most grocery and health food stores.

Sounds like a perfect food for us no?

the replacement has been around forever and it's called lentils and its even better as far as protein/fiber content.

You can find quinoa at a lot of healthfood stores. If you're in calgary the healthfood store just off of 14st sw behind coop carries it.

it's too expensive imo

The United Nations has even classified this super-food as a “super-crop.” Quinoa contains more protein than any other grain (an average of 16.2%, compared with 7.5% for rice, 9.9% for millet and 14% for wheat). It’s also a good source of dietary fiber and is high in magnesium, potassium and iron and a good source of phosphorous, calcium, vitamin E and several B vitamins. Quinoa is also gluten-free and easy to digest. It contains an almost perfect balance of ALL EIGHT ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS needed for tissue development in humans.
Quinoa is not a true cereal grain but technically a fruit of the Chenopodium family. Quinoa’s relatives include spinach, beets and Swiss chard. It is used as a grain and substituted for grains because of its cooking characteristics.

Lentils do not have all 8 amino acids
courtisy of the food network. And they taste like shit imo unless u eat soup all the time.

That's great. Have you tasted quinoa? It's not that much better.

Now do a price comparison.

i dont like the stuff... id also like to see you actually manage to eat a full cup of the stuff.... that's a cup uncooked.. it puffs up... blech.

if i were a vegetarian, im sure thered be some sort of recipe to make it more palatable, but other than cooking it up and mixing oil and salt, i have no idea how to make it taste good. i dont care for the texture either...

my mom's been trying to get me to switch for years. its very healthy, thats for sure.

Just the interesting thing is that Quinoa isn't a grain, it's actually a seed :)

There's lots of interesting recipes out there for it; I still stick with my oats because I love them. I switch it up between Oat Bran, Steelcut Oats and Large Flake Oats.
