Chrysler threatens to pull out of Canada
Updated: Wed Mar. 11 2009 10:50:07 PM

Chrysler LLC says it may no longer be able to operate in Canada unless Ottawa loans the company billions of dollars and workers agree to massive wage cuts.

Chrysler president and vice chairman Tom LaSorda told MPs Wednesday the company is seeking US$2.3 billion from the Canadian government -- roughly a quarter of what it's asking from the White House.

He also said Canada's tax agency must agree to not demand more cash or collateral in a tax fight with the company. The Canada Revenue Agency is withholding $300 million in tax rebated and has put a $500-million lien on Chrysler's Brampton plant.

"The current success and long-term viability of Chrysler's manufacturing operations in Canada is very much dependent on (those) three critical factors," he told a committee hearing.

"Chrysler LLC cannot afford to manufacture products in a jurisdiction that in uncompetitive relative to other automotive jurisdictions."

New Democrat MP Joe Coartin, a member of the parliamentary committee that heard LaSorda's comments, dismissed them as little more than posturing.

"The bottom line is that Chrysler does not function in the United States without Canada," he said.

Chrysler Canada and its parent company, Chrysler LLC, have had their sales hammered by the economic downturn. Its sales were down 27 per cent in February compared to last year and it has asked Ottawa for a $1 billion in emergency loans as it works on its restructuring plan.

LaSorda said his company's labour costs are $70 an hour in wages and benefits for both current workers and retirees. He says it needs to be cut by $20 to be competitive.

Just last week, Chrysler announced it would be cutting 1,200 jobs in Windsor, Ont., by eliminating the third shift at its minivan assembly plant.

The Windsor plant produces the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans and has about 4,450 hourly workers. It is the company's only supplier on minivans as two other minivan plants have been shut down in the U.S.

LaSorda said that the company could move the Windsor plant to either of the other sites they previously shut down.

The Dodge Grand Caravan was Canada's No. 3 best selling vehicle in February.

Analysts say Chrysler is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. On top of the most recent job cut announcements, it has slashed about 32,000 jobs to staunch the financial bleeding, and has cut production levels by 30 per cent.

I don't see the problem.

A bloated company with overpaid employees, lacking innovation, and products that nobody is interested in buying, might shutdown...

And we're supposed to be surprised??

not much of a recession here in Alberta. Just the ones who are **** tards and abused the system are sucking hind titty now. Yes, it is not as busy as it was, and yes, housing starts are down, and all that shit..... but compared to 10 years ago, we are doing fine.

PLUS, our provincial govt is awesome, and is pumping the economy with civil infrastructure at low interest financing, and maintaining our heritage fund... good job stelmach

i think if you talk to the rig guys and ft mac guys you will hear a different story, lots of layoffs, 15000 last month in AB i believe...I supply a product for ft mac and almost all large projects are ceasing for now and billions and billions are on hold.....hold on tight, its a coming.....Housing is slated to dip 19 percent more this year.......
As far as Chrysler goes, it will hurt pretty bad for southern ont if they do leave...but i cannot agree with more subsidy...GM is holding back on wage and pension increases until 2012..woopity do, its a sham, they are already way to high on both fronts, they are signing to get subsidy, then they will be back for more, its getting redundant...

Stelmach is a big government liberal. His spending programs give Alberta the highest per capita spending out of any province, and his new royalties program has hurt small and mid cap gas producers who are moving to Fort St. John.

Every dollar Stelmach spends is one the private sector is deprived of, and nobody ever considers the opportunity cost of that money. Not to mention his spending will increase the cost of capital for private sector firms who now have to compete with the province for resources (especially engineering resources).

And the price of concrete, reebar, labour, but more importantly, engineers and planners just went up because of a pedestrian bridge. WTF don't they need bridges to move cars?

Stelmach is using Orwellian speech to coin this deficit as an "investment". LOL. He is making an "investment" with your money, but the kicker is you have no choice in the matter.

On another note if the Alberta government stopped spending money on healthcare they could get rid of the income tax and be about even.

chrysler was doing poorly before the recession. If they cannot make money in good times then that just shows you how unviable of a business plan they have.

Same for the other big three who could not make money during the good times. Who pays unskilled worlers $34 an hour and $70 an hour total compenstation- just nuts. When a private company wants to do that well that is their choice, but when you want the public to support that with their tax money- no chance.

I cannot believe that gm workers do not even pay into their own pension!!! Now they want us to bail out a pension that they never even paid for. What a joke!!!!

This reminds me of how we are ****ing up the whole process of evolution. . let the weak die and the strong live. Weak being companies, or *(I know I"ll take a lot of shit for this one) maybe people with ****ed up genetic diseases. If we keep up at this rate, we will stop evolving and actually do worse than evolve. I know if I owned a small company and I was going under because of the recession then I'd be up shit creek. . I think that's fair.

I say **** em.. if they can't run a profitable business in Canada they can take a hike. No one deserves a bail out. If you can't make it, suck it up and move on.

Our tax dollars are needed elsewhere.

Remember that the plants and equipment will still be there, and so will the labor. There is no way the government will let Chrysler move its machines after they gave them loans, and with Chrysler owing 900 million in back taxes.

Seize the plants and sell them off to a competent company that doesn't have to deal with the CAW.

I very much like the word you used in your post: extortion.

My 2nd car is a crysler, it is nicely done so I love it and since I bought it 2 years ago, I have had no problems with it.

I agree that a lot of these companies are seeking money...money to be given to them for free.
Is this empty money? If you had 100 million to a company that promises survival for 12 months with that money, what will happen once the twelve months run out, and the company is still in the same position? more money?? EMPTY MONEY that is.

In a day like today, there are no alpha material, as they are all desintegrating right before our eyes.
The economy upturn is on its way...unfortunately there is no way or predicting when.

the employees in part are what have caused this mess. Yes management is to blame as well but we ALL know how Unions work and they don't do it in the best interest of win-win.

I say **** the company and **** the employees who have helped cause this mess. Their more and more and more attitude has not helped at all.
