What are you looking for?
east coast probally has the nicest beaches, but hardly any surf.
west coast has more beach area to choose from with countless surf hotspots.
each offers an array of sports and sightseeing activities, if your interested in
the ancient pyramids you are better off travelling to the east as there are
alot more sites nearby.
I went all inclusive and I have winged it a few times, I would never go all
inclusive again though.

Meg,
I went to a resort called el dorado royale (http://www.eldoradosparesorts.com/) it is in the Riviera Maya. This place was beautiful, even though the weather wasn't the best, 2 great days of sun the other 4 not so good. The food was incredible. All you could eat, they have a protein bar and use dymatize protein. It was a little expensive 2grand/person, but you should be able to find something cheaper now.
Since i've been to mexico like 10 times in the last 5 years i'll give you a quick run down;
Cancun is fun when your young, but im over that now. The resorts are small, food is usually shitty and you have to pay alot more to get a resort that has half of what the resorts outside of cancun have.
Playa del carmen is my fav now, you get best of both worlds. Larger resorts with more food/bar choices and things to do at resort, as well as close to nightlife when you want to get off the resort.
Mayan Rivera is nice too, but too far away from civilization for me.
Puerto Vallarta is nice, i like the cultured feel of it.
Mazatland is shit, went there for spring break 4 years back and it was very run down land poverty looking. Posters of wanted people on ever street corner, and drug dealers every where you turn.
I usually stay at RIU resorts, they tend to be good and well priced. Expedia.ca or selloffvacations.com is where i've booked all trips i've done. You can price out the difference between flying direct or connecting through houston or wherever. Play around on the sites and see which days are cheapest to fly out and arrive home on. Sometimes you can stay 10 nights for same price as 7-8 by leaving and departing on certain days of the week.
Lastly, pay more and don't go anything less then 4 star, you will regret it unless your cheap like physique :) If food is crap it ruins your trip cuz if your like me your constantly hungover in the morning and need some good grub to get over it!

playa del carman is the best place I have been to. Lots of good restaraunts, and lots to do. I did an all inclusive, and I think they are worth it, if you are mainly there to veg and have fun.

It highly depends what you want out of a vacation, i have been to mexico about ten times in the last 5 years as well. Like others i prefer Playa on the caribbean side however my favorite resort is the Golden Crown Paradise in Puerto Vallarta, to qualify that however i like small adults only resorts. I like being able to take my bottle of gibsons down to the beach bar and knowing each night that the bartender will remember me and have my bottle ready for me. Its amazing how many friends you make when your the only one with a bottle of real canadian whisky.....................lol As well i like meeting people and i find smaller resorts make that easier, the last trip to the GCP, my wife met so many people around the pool that i never once got grief for diving 12 times over a 2 week vacation.

I think that is another part of the barcelo maya beach resort which is where we where for new years. It was a nice resort but i was truly disappointed with the dive facilites, i hate those cattle boats and the arrogant instructors. Rooms where damn nice though, and i truly appreciate having a fridge in the room. It was the first time we took the kids and we all had a good time, in fact it was the first time i actually went to the nightly entertainment and was quite impressed.

Do not stay at the Embarcadaro Pacifico in PV. Worst place I have ever stayed. Run down, dirty, food terrible, and not that great of service.
