View Full Version : Hernon style

Has anyone tried using Phil Hernon's strategies? I've been using a personally modified version of his, and the gains have been going great. I'm over 35 and have been lifting for 20+ years, and I'm gaining like a newbie again. No "supplements"; can't get any here and I've been away too long! lol. Anyways, you train each bodypart once every three days, with three working sets only, some rest pause or strip sets once in awhile (my own mod), and that's it! Anyone else doing this? I'd love to hear someone else's experiences.

I guess no one has tried this; oh well. Dante Tudel and the DC stuff was semi based on some of Hernon's work. Maybe I'll try that thread instead.

dc and Hernon are totally, completely different...i am currently being trained by Hernon...Sorry i never saw this thread until now.....
Hernon is real good, but has a totally different diet and totally different training style, Hernon is more drop sets and 6 days per week...DC is 3 or 4 days per week with rest pause ...Different exercises etc...I am using a local competitior to do my hands on posing and last few weeks of my diet for me...
I started a thread about DC on here...:)

What I meant, not in the programming so much, as in the philosophy. Dante mentioned (in an article) that alot of his early ideas came as a result of interviewing other individuals, one of them being Phil Hernon. My two best programs for growing tissue have been following one of Hernon's earlier programs (after bulgarian burst or whatever it was) and DC training, so I have always had an affinity for these two styles. No offense meant by the way. I guess the intense nature, the more frequent working of bodyparts(although Hernon is more frequent), short sessions so as not to stress the cns so much, etc. Have a great day, and thanks for adding in. By the way, I really used to admire Phil way back; we're about the same age. How do you like LBA's?

i used dante from 04-06, and hernon all of 2008,And am using him for 2009 in June, as he is still teaching good stuff, i was getting programs and emailing weekly with updates and changes from them etc...Both dudes always get back to you within the day, and no word of exaggeration, hernon is within 10 minutes...
Phil Hernons home is professional muscle, and he was on the round table at intense muscle but isnt so much anymore...
I honestly cant say enough about both of them...
2 drastically different diets as well...Like i mean absolute opposites in many and almost all ways...I learnt a lot about my body in this time and they taught me a tonne, Hernon is bringing me into contest except the end my local buddy competitor is doing my finale.....
similar trng philosophy, 2 totally different routines and exercises, 1 says never do X, the other says only do X....awesome stuff

OK, Coles notes versions:
1. chest/back/delts on one day, arms/legs on another, rest maybe 1 day per week, or whenever you need (sometimes longer, sometimes not)
2. 3 exercises per bodypart, 1 work set each (1st exercise 5-7 reps, 2nd exercise 8-10 reps, 3rd exercise 12-15+ reps); rotate exercises each cycle
3. every set to positive failure
4. short sessions so as not to stress cns
5. majority of protein synthesis occurs within 36 hours, muscles recover quicker than cns, don't stress the cns

At least that's what I have from years ago.

It is quite different now, at least my program was, im sure he tailors it different for everyone, that looks similar to DC training, except the days in the gym are less on DC..Now i see why you said earlier they are similar to DC, maybe at one time he was, but he has evolved since..

Are you able to expand, on the philosophy, not the program, I know that would be privileged?

In what regard??

Low volume, different rep ranges, splits, etc? If not I fully understand. You paid for it not us.

Ok the split is 3 days on 1 day off.......In the 3 days you go,
chest shoulders tris day 1
back bis day 2
legs day 3

medium volume warm up to max weight and then 3 drop sets dropping 10 percent each drop
8-12 rep range and absolute failure last set...doesnt do much with progressive resistance, he claims failure is the key..

Thanks for the reply; he has changed somewhat in his approach, eh? How do you like it? Did you ever try his older routines?

i really liked it too..but 6 days a week is too hard with a wife and kid, and everyother week working 60hrs...
DC is better suited for me...

That im not sure of Rich.I think for $250.00 a year for advive is cheap,i actually started with him @ $200.00.A small price to pay for advice from a retired pro.He calls a spade a spade. Some people bash him but he has made some great transformations with national & natural athletes. He does like LBAs but he will hook you up with a diet that works for you.He will answer your questions with in the hour most times. He sure helped me to get my legs up.
especially my hamstrings.

$250 for a year`s advice is insanely cheap. What are LBA`s?

im pretty sure LBA are liquid amino acids... more expensive than i care to pay for, but as far as i understand you can literally live off drinking them precontest

They are new and improved now...they are a complete protein...You can now get double the amount for almost the same price. LBA's are the only protein supplement I use.

liquid beef aminos, extracts from beef.......5 grams per tablespoon....
also has glycerin in it for extra saturation and keeps you from becoming dehydrated....i like them
trueprotein .com sells them in bulk now as well...
