A counterpoint from Rex Murphy to the recent National Geographic oilsands article; this would be a good response to anyone criticizing what we do in the patch on a daily basis…

be objective.

all the crazy libs and socialists, and environmentalists just want "green at any cost", as they drive their hybrid to work, which took countless tonne of co2 emmissions to create and maintain!

the oil sands will be exploited, and there will be a localized environmental impact. what are the options? there are none right now that are feesible.

oh sure, build million solar panels and line the hillsides, and build a million wind generators, but god forbid....nuclear power...

its retarded

i think we should just track down Carl, and get him to ride a bike or run in a hampster wheel to kinetically power Canada. If anybody could do it, Carl could do it for sure.

He's a smart guy. They didn't put him on T.V because of his good looks. I was watching something today and apparently the oil sands don't produce as much CO2 emmisions as in the past. It was something like 15% more than conventional drilling for a given amount of oil.

I certainly don't criticize the oilsands as i make my living drilling SAGD wells that produce oilsands too deep to be strip mined. I do however think there is going to be a cost to it that none of us are currently seeing. I know that the moment i drive into Ft. Mcmurray i get a terrible headache that gets better but dosen't totally go away until i have left for at least a day. I am sure that at some point in my life i will be wondering if it was all worth it, hell of course it was worth it, how else could i afford to have lived my life as full as i have!

Rex Murphy is one of my fav journalist, and his pieces in the Globe are good too, though harder to follow than others.

I hope Alberta separates if the Feds force some socialist "global warming" scheme down our throats. Best way for the environment to be protected is through property rights and not regulations.
