CBB,
There is very big contreversy (does not surprise me at all) on the new changes streered towards the privacy control, or WAIT--as I adjust my key board: LACK OF PRIVACY FOR ITS USERS.
I cannot recall the exact quote I read a couple of days ago, but it is along the lines that Facebook corporation --that is in part owned by Microsoft of course--is open to use any of the information provided by its users as it sees suitable. What does that mean?
Well a big investigation is on its way I believe...speculate all you want.
For those who are on facebook, you have now been warned openly, and not by me, but by the open changes made by the corporation itself.

it means they can do whatever they want with your personal information.
Anyone that posts personal information to an open forum including places like facebook that have a facade of security expecting that information to be protected is a fool.

You can't even delete your facebook. You can "deactivate" it, but all the information and pictures are saved.
yeah which is rediculous..

Once it is posted on the net it is in the common domain for anyone to use unless you copyright it. The only one that can protect your privacy is you.

take me away.
I love facebook. I keep updated with my training buddies at the gym. I see that my 15 year old is the town drunk. i see my 27 yr old is needing time with mom to work out her relationship with him in Orlando. I see my clients are doing great orwhen he is falling behind and I need to call them to boost their esteem back up.
Privacy is for someone hiding something.

Privacy is for someone hiding something.
This is why we put letters in envelopes, have dressing rooms, draw our blinds at night?
Sorry, maybe it was sarcastic, but "Privacy is for someone hiding something." is a very dangerous belief.

Agreed this is the mantra of any police state. They will search your home using this logic. From personal experience I have had a couple instances where women have come to me at work crying because they are being stalked on FaceBook, as I am the "IT Guy". In both instances they had been far to free with personal information.
Personally I wish we could be more free with our personal info as I think it would make a better community and world in general. However, there are to many criminals out their wanting to exploit the weak and vulnerable.

I know I am still just a "Twirp" here :), but as far as facebook and privacy goes, I saw an interview on t.v. recently, with the originator/owner of facebook (can't at the moment recall his name), and according to him, the deal is that for a number of years (either 10 or 20, can't remember which), pretty much anything you put on there is theirs legally to do with what they wish.
It is not JUST about being careful with some possibly illegal shit you want to hide - what this means is that for any of you who might have dreams to one day make it as say, a model, television personality, ****, anything in the entertainment business really, will have to accept that the owners of facebook will be able to profit from using any info you post there now or in the future, should they choose to do so - this of course includes pictures.
Seems to me to be more of a smart business move rather than anything else on their part, for example, I don't know if that pic of Michael Phelps smoking a bong was ever on facebook, but if it was, they would have of course had the right to sell that picture to the tabloids and profit from it, at his expense, and as far as I know that would be completely legal (of course I don't know if this happened, just trying to think of something most people would have heard about).
CaRl.

If I may post this....
- - - - HOW TO ACHIEVE PERMANENT DELETION - - - -
Go to this page:
http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account
Click "Submit".
Your account will be permanently deleted within a few days.
This method is official and should be complete, i.e. no need to delete individual photos, comments, messages or items from your profile or anywhere else on Facebook!
I'm going to try to delete mine. I've been hearing a lot of stories from very reliable sources about this site and others like it.
I just clicked on the link and it reads this...
Delete My Account
Deleting due to change in Terms of Service?
Are you deleting because you are concerned about Facebook's Terms of Service?
This was a mistake that we have now corrected. You own the information you put on Facebook and you control what happens to it. We are sorry for the confusion. See http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=54746167130 for more information.

Looking through all these angry people who want to cancel facebook because of all the crap going on... WOW, you gotta read this one.
"you morons! i wrote a PRIVATE MESSAGE to someone ... and it showed up, in its ENTIRETY, inhis regular email ... where his whole family read it. It was racy. VERY! Now, before ... a note would come thru saying I sent him a note ... then, over this weekend, the ENTIRE MESSAGE went thru ..... are you CRAZY?!
DELETE MY ACCOUNT & SCREW THE ADS .. both the one I have, and the four others I was working on! I REFUSE TO PAY FOR LACK OF PRIVACY.
This man? I LOVE HIM. And I have loved him since I was 16. I am 52. His divorce was going to happen no matter what you did, but what you did revealed things to his TEEN SON .... now THAT you shoulld be SUED FOR!
you morons."
P.S. It was a guys name who wrote it...... not saying there's anything wrong with that but.....

There are groups out there whose sole purpose is to hack sites like this. Do you trust someone else to guard your privacy?

WOW very confusing in regards to what "deleting" the account means then.....I think facebook is facing their potential ending soon.
Lawsuits are going to hit them from the left and the right...I am certain that many big law firms will take stabs at the multimillion dollar software---poor Bill, he is no longer the richest man (firm) alive, but now will suffer tremendous consequences on this investment also.

Nothing on the internet is ever deleted, almost everything gets spidered and archived somewhere... I think people just need to be careful and think before the post things online especially personal informantion, you never know what someone might do with it.

An example of what can happen with facebook pics.... a co-worker was browsing the web and found one of her pictures she had posted on facebook while she was drunk and passed out made it on the front page of a UK newspaper.
