Hahaha nice!

From a teaching perspective, people are told to exhale during the exertion because the increased blood pressure from holding breath increases the chance of losing consciousness. However, in a healthy person with healthy blood pressure, the chances of it happening are obviously quite low.

It's probably more of a cover their asses thing, than anything else...

The way I see it is: When you're pushing someone's car out of the snow, you take a deep breath and hold it in, right? Must be normal/natural for the body to do that if you instinctively do it, so it makes sense to hold it while lifting heavy too.
