Protien sources seem to be really high priced in MTL... are they the same prices all over Canada, maybe just QC around the city. Boneless skinless chicken is like $15kg. I use to use MuscleMilk alot but its over 50 bucks for a 2.5lb... I use to get the 5lb for about the same price.
Is there a cheep place to buy supplements from locally, I don't want to order from the States and pay the shipping.
maybe I just gotta suck it up, lol.

ya it's crazy how things are. It's definitely a lot cheaper to crappy foods then it is to eat foods that are actually good for you.

IMO, you gotta shop wisely. Watch for the news paper ads. NO Frills might have a sale on chicken boob. Zehers has lean ground beef. Sobeys store brand egg whites are cheaper.
Lay out your Sat morning shopping plan. Go from one store to another for the cheaper basics.
Go to a good meat store last. That way you wont' buy is pasta and bread to go with his meal in a bag hours before the party.
Just got some t-bone for 5.99lb at Loblaws, fired some up for Dinner very tender and tasty.

NO Frills sems to have some good prices, to bad there not around here. Your right though, I saw chicken breast for $11kg a super-c which is still like $5lb so I guess I'll head there once a week instead of the convince of the Metro store half a block away.
I was never a fan of canned tuna, but I started eating that at least once a day. kinda worried about the mercury though as I eat fish for dinner too.

for chicken and steak... find a butcher!
I get all my chicken and steak at a butcher for farrr cheaper than I'd get in the grocery store. Plus, I buy 50-60lbs of both each month so I get a better discount and especially as a long-term customer.

First off bonless skinless chicken breast is probably the most expensive protein you can buy. Not a good idea if you are on a budget. Inexpensive protein sources include eggs+whites, lean ground beef (strained) , tuna, talapia, protein powder. Muscilemilkis garbage just loaded with sugar...buy a pure whey isolate or a whey isolate concentrate blend. You can purchase bulk protein online as well as get much better prices then you are paying. Find a good butcher and get you meat from them it is usually much cheaper.

I do chicken thighs a lot. Just throw them in a small turkey roasting pan with some spices on them, then bag what I don't eat and freeze or refridgerate it.

Boneless skinless chicken breast use to be the cheapest for me, I'd stock up once a month at &1.99/lb, just have to get use to using a different protein source as my main form of protein.
I've been using mainly Optimum Nutrition whey since I've been here, still pretty pricey, going to look into other options when I get back from Cuba.

You say you`re broke but you`re going to cuba? A real bodybuilder would buy food and supps or even gear! Seriouslty muscle milk is one of the worst decisions if money is an issues. Every month physique ( the sponsor here:fitnes etc...) has a given protein on sale. Maybe you should check it out. That or buy in bulk online. Basically you shouldn`t be paying more that $50 for 5 lbs of protein max. Ground beef is likely your cheapest protein source. I used to eat about 300 grams of it twice a day with sweet potatoes. Work good but gotta put ketchup on the meat.

I get my check breasts at Costco. I buy them frozen by the bag. There is about 12-15 breasts in the bag and it costs me $17.00 Its an excellent deal and the breasts are better than Prime IMHO...

I will say this about Montreal. It is the cheapest city in Canada to buy groceries and live.
Go to Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto, and then come back here and realize how good prices are.
Ice cream in Calgary is $2 more per carton than at Provigo, and your rent in Hong Couver is twice as much.

This is the only reason i like my location allowing me to shop in the states...boneless chicken breast is so cheap over there i usually get mine from .99/lb to 1.99/lb US...actually my aunt buys it and freezes it i just pay her. Canadian prices are insane on chicken and steak, and don't give me the "they pump their chicken full of hormones" since allot of us do the same thing so more is always better!

I buy my chicken breast by the box. Still boneless, skinless is expensive.
I also like to buy whole beef tenderloins and have the butcher cut them into 8oz portions. I eat a lot of meat and tend to go on special trips between my butcher and my freezer. I keep thinking buying a whole side might be the way to go.
As expensive as meat is. I'm surprised the vegetarians are saving on fresh produce.
It seems like good produce in winter ends up costing more than the meat.
Not being lactose intolerant I find 3 litres of milk a day is a pretty darn good weight gainer without much cost. Boiled eggs, Ground beef and cheap tuna are 3 more pretty good sources of cheap easy eating.
I'm also finding that once I've hit a couple of grams of protein per pound of body weight there is absolutely nothing wrong with some good old fashioned fat. It tastes good and it seems to really help (nut oils and olive oil are my friends). On the other hand I have little tolerance for carbs and my pasta addiction may kill me in the end.

Remember that many companies inject saline in their chicken breast to increase the weight of it. I noticed frozen costco chicken is really salty, especially if you don't rinse it first.
Ritch
08-02-2009, 07:04 PM
^^^ That is true and increases the weight by at least 25%. I learned this in a butcher course I didn`t complete last year. Anyway, calculate the 25% you lose from saline and another 20% you lose from cooking. You`ve almost lost 50% of the chicken. With marinated chicken you lose even more weight.
wouldn't exactly call a T-bone bodybuilder food but tasty fo sho!
Ya its first class protein, plus i did many bodybuilding show and eat t-bone steak.Pus i know you can eat since i did my course on Nutritionist so your talking to the wrong guy.

Even so...the 27$ box of 4kg chicken breast at 16g or protein per 100g gives you:
640g of protein for 27$ which comes out to (640 / 30g) = "around 21 cans of tuna"
I know that you can buy way more than 21 cans of tuna for 27 dollars, but chicken is way better and can be used in a variety of meals.

Costco Booobs for sure...best deal out there IMHO. Good quality too. You can get some real big ones there too. I sometimes cut them down the meal and split them up to make them last longer.

If you look around enough you can hook up with a farmer for cheap sides of beef. I go to the farmers market and last 1/4 I bought was around 3 bucks a pound dressed.
