How many parents make their own food? I just finished making sweet potatoes and chicken puree for my daughter. She loves this combo as well as chicken and cauliflower. She won't eat premade cereal, but she'll mow down 2 tbsp of either mix per sitting. Its never to early to start them on the right track.:hu

We used to make all our own foods when our kids were young. You'd be surpriced how this habit of eating carries over into later years. I remember our kid's idea of a snack while watching a movie was a plate of veggies or fruit.

I`m assuming the amounts of protein you guys put in the baby food is minimal, but I would be concerned about the safety of this.

Well in the powdered baby formula mixes they use whey protein so I dont see the problem with that, just dont go over the whole 2 grams per pound of bodyweight ratio!! for the average 3 month old what is that like 12 or 16 grams? haha

macka your a great daddy. Store bought rice cereal is crap. You know that. It's over processed and lacks healthier nutrition. The makers of it have to re fortify it to make it healthier to feed to your baby. I call it wall paper paste. Useless for babies.

IMO..would you eat a processed white carb as your first food?

In Third World countries there are new mothers with babies in danger of dehydration. So we send them white rice to bind their digestive tracts and to prevent more diuretic conditions. Why would we give white rice to our babies in this country who have not had much more then mothers milk the first 6 months of life? It's like going from mommas milk to Mc Ds.

Sweet potato, squash, banana, peaches, oats, barley, avocado, and protein are the basics for starting solids. After baby is ok with these then you can add in meat products.

Breastfed babies need protein sooner then formula babies do. Chicken can be processed and mixed into their meals. DO NOT give your babies protein powders. Formula is the F word. I don't say the F word in my house.

I could go on and on and on..Bless you Macka for giving as much thought to your children's nutrition as you give your own. And why toss money at Gerber when you have the time and resources to make your own?

To make your own oats..take old fashioned Oats in their dry form and put it in your electric blender. Turn it on high and pick i up. Toss it around like your shaking a martini.
Cook it up like your oats and feed it to Jr.

Avacado? I never thought of that, sounds like it goes on the must try list. Anyways FC once the puree is made, you can freeze it in ice cube trays, and then bag the cubes, they last about 2 weeks that way.

Cheeky Monkey in London Ont has great trays Macka for freezing in because the food has a cover over it till frozen. Works well for EBM too because the smaller frozen cubes fit easier into a bottle later to be defrosted, instead of a large bag of frozen milk.

Note about Avacado, have you purchased then before? They can be hard and not ripe but once ready to eat they have to be used in a few days. 'They also turn dark like a banana does if left exposed to the air.

Here is a great site with info about them and recipes....
