Hi guys first post here and i need some advice on dropping the fat pounds. I have a lot of jiggle to lose and want to see it gone as fast as possible and im curious as to what type of cutting diet you guys found most effective for fat loss and muscle retention. i have looked into both diets but found some mixed reactions to both. I am leaning towards the keto approach but i am willing to listen with an open mind. any help would be awesome thanks guys

Most people CANNOT choose a keto diet. You may try extremely low carb in hopes of getting into ketosis however how low you go and if you enter ketosis at all is entirely individual. Keto offers no benefit over low carb if calorie restriction is the same though I'll admit many report feeling shitty on low carb until they reach a state of ketosis. Sufficient protein accompanied by adequate EFAs and a calorie deficit is all that is necessary to lose weight. Whether fats or carbs are restricted and to what degree should be individual.

On a keto diet you will retain more muscle and feel much better. It takes approx 72 hours to enter ketosis and 2 weeks for the body to fully adapt to using ketones as fuel. On a low carb diet you will feel hungry, low energy, irritability, etc and will tend to lose more mscle through gluconeogenesis. I have used both diets for many years...keto is by far superior and easier to stay on.

This is an excellent post!
I am preparing to take my training and dieting to an entirely and more advanced level--in the next 4-6 weeks time.
Objective 230lbs 12% down to 210 8-10%
I have never been below 10%, never had the need to. But I am comtemplating playing and working towards a possible show.I will be using the Keto system

if you want to do a show you need to commit to doing it. You can't use the ideology of "I'll diet down and see if I can get ripped enough to step on stage". You need to decide to do it or not. It is a completely different mindset towards dieting when you KNOW oyu have to be on stage in a speedo in front of hundreds of people. lol

Not saying that is how you are approaching it but just want to make people aware that there is no "trying" to diet for a show. There is do or do not.

Good luck bud!

I agree with you fully.
I have done two shows in the past. Placed 2nd my first time, and then 7th.---got my ass kicked by a bunch of seniors :D :D

There are many factors involved wen it comes to making a decision like that. One must be ready to FULLY structure their life, and be able to maintain all the changes that are required...in order to be succesful.

Good advice there, thank you.

Absolutely! Dieting for a show is the hardest thing I can do in life. It's not the dieting persay but the fact I remove myself from everything. All friends, all family, all social outtings and events. For 5 months! It's very difficult mentally to do that but in order to be successful on stage I feel you have to do those things.

And you just started dating a new girl right? Oh man... that;s never fun. That's when they REALLY get a glimpse of what this lifestyle is like. It's not dieting to drop a few pounds to look good for a trip or the beach. It's dieting to be ripped and dry enough to compete and win. They are going to hate you by about week 6 LOL

well I tend to flucuate between a couple different ones which my and my trainer/nutritionalist will decide upon before we get rolling.

50/50 (carb/protein) is easier on me mentally but the one problem with it is I don't generally get a cheat meal (ever) while on it.

keto works best at cutting me up, drying me out and keeping good energy levels but it ****s with me mentally because I don't get carbs lol

low carb/calorie I actually like and find pretty easy because I know that even though 6 days a week I am eating so little (under 2000 calories) on the 7th day I get a mega refeed. Of course this refeed gets tapered down as we get closer to show time but I basically get to go almost 16 weeks with 1 day a week to have anything I want to eat (within reason of course).

Many different ways to skin a cat. As I get older the lower carb I definitely need to go to drop the pounds. I do not have a body type that's meant to be lean or ripped :(

cool, i have been trying to get opinions on both, and i get good and bad thoughts on both...lol..
I think im going to try lower carb type diet, and then carb cycling later on.....Damn...
I was thinking real hard about doing keto lately as my girl is doing that for her contest and thought it would be easier prepping foods etc in the same household. I pmd a fellow about it today, and another fellow about carb cycling etc..
I dont care about hard work etc, but id like to keep the peace at home and she is a redhead...

Thanks for the reply, i thought maybe you were going low carb and forgot what you did...lolol

oh and has anyone had any issues with gaining weight back due to the insulin sensitivity that comes with keto?

Being more sensitive to insulin is a good thing not a bad thing. You just have to reintroduce carbs back into the diet slowly and with small amounts. The quick weight gain is usually water which can turn into peripheral edema which is not healthy...so take it easy on the pizza after the diet.

How much weight are you trying to lose and what % of body fat are you trying to get to? Unless you are trying to get ripped the keto diet may not be necessary. Most people can get down to reasonable bodyfat % with a high protein, moderate carb, moderate fat diet.
