Hello,
I am new to investing in the stock market and I was wondering if anyone can give me some pointers on stock trading.
I just sent in an application to E*Trade Canada along with a small $50 deposit just to play around with the penny stocks to gain some knowledge and experience. Not looking for any serious investing right now as a majority of the stocks are on the decline, just want to play around and get my feet wet in the stock market scene. Thanks!
I think TD waterhouse just started on it with low trading fees, give it a shot,i will be looking into it as well.

I think your doing it right, although i think you will find if you end up going deeper with it that the discount brokerages have some serious disadvantages. I have no problem paying $30 a trade through tdwaterhouse when my trades are executed immediately, i waited 36 hours on etrade for a market price buy which was the last trade i ever did through etrade.

this is the time to invest. Take a look at financial records of the company you are going to buy into. If you don't understand them yourself have someone who knows financial statements give you their input. This is the market to invest as majority of companies are at their lowest price/share in such a long time.
A good way to get started if you don't have an economic background is to go to your local chapters and purchase some books. A good start is Day Trading for dummies and investing for Canadians for dummies. These will give you good insight into what your getting into.

How liquid were the shares?
p.s. to the decision on E-Trade and minimizing costs - unless you don't care about being robbed on inactivity fees or when you wan't your money back, then think about the other online discounters like Questrade.

took the words right otu of my mouth! these guys are crooks! they stole $100 from me b3ecause of the inactivity fee.
they also have a $50 charge to cancel your account. i didnt pay it, as i told them they could sue me for it, as i dont ever recall it being in my application.

i can't remember specifics, but i know the current ask when i placed my bid was over ten times what i was trying to buy in quantity. Then next day when the buy still hadn't been completed there was stioll more than enough shares available.

going along with fit226 post-
There are a lot of resources available to learn about trading. Even now is a great time to invest. The best advice I received was in my first year business class that everyone has heard "dont put all your eggs in one basket" diversify your portfolio with different industries, different markets, different sizes.
If you need some books. Pm me I will gladly send you some info on useful eBooks
