lol, watch those edges, when you catch one you will know cause you will be flat on your ass or your face.
I did it for a whole season when I was younger and lived in Jasper but went back to skiing the next year. It was def fun though.

I fell off a rail yesterday and landed on my chin. Nice faceplant. I was bleeding all the way down the hill. I look like Popeye right now with my swollen chin.
Snowboarding hurts!! But it's so damn fun.
this is where you are gonna find out how much functional strength you actually have in your abdomen and legs, especially in your quads and calves. i took my first lesson in whistler when i was 17. really serious place for a first time rider, but i picked it up about 2 hours and left my instructor cause he told me i was good to go. keep your weight on your back leg to avoid edge bite and bring some warm gloves. they're gonna be spending a lot of time in the snow.

I found as soon as I shifted my weight to my back leg it soon became the front leg. Was an easy way to shift back and forth between normal and goofy foot.

well, I came, I saw, I did and I fell over and over and over and over again lol
After my lesson I went and tried a few runs for myself.
First things first... that chair lift sucks! Like seriously... WTF?? My arm got caught in the damn thing and dragged me on the ground for a few feet before I got it unhooked lol
I fell... ALOT! Which is ok. I can handle the falling because the more you fall the quicker you'll learn lol And I am not sure what's more exhausting... falling and getting up or running a marathon lol
I haven't been able to figure out how to get up from my ass yet. I have to stand up from my feet. I can squat 5 bills but I can't get my damn ass up from the seated position! That was frustrating so I just stopped trying or else I'd just get pissed off and I wanted to be as calm as possible doing this :)
I need to find something padded for my ass. I only took 2 falls on my ass but they were doozies. Sleeping last night sucked large! Definitely no chiickie on top sex for a few days haha
Before going I already had some major swelling on my forearm/elbow area. On my last run I had to stop and walk the rest of the way down. I couldn't cope with the pain and the swelling I was getting in my elbow from continually hitting it over and over and over and over again . That sucked. I was disappointed about that. Next time I'll wear an elbow pad.
All in all I had a blast and look forward to getting better as this. Doubt I'll ever be GREAT but I don't need to be great... just decent enough so that I can make it a run or 2 without falling.
Can't wait to heal and do my next lesson :)
Anything I should be doing in the gym that can help with this sport?
maybe try to work on core balance? get one of those pieces of wood with half a ball on the bottom of it and see if you can balance? or do some core excercises with the big ball?
waderow
12-01-2009, 10:27 AM
bro, if you're going to use those half ball things n'shit, please please please stay the **** away from the guys lifting LOL
my biggest pet peeve in my faggoty ass gym is the selection of clowns doing ball exercises in front of the dumbels or in one way or another...my ****ing way.

I never could either, just roll over and do a push up to get up from the front.
I hope you were not unhooking and getting up and latching back on, jesus that would of been a long day.

did you ski before bro?
i have not skied since grade 5, but have been thinking about taking up boarding.
looks fun, and I need to add something to my life that is social in nature.
lifting iron with an ipod blaring isnt satisfying my needs completely.
just wondering how hard it would be to learn, and how much $ did it cost to get outfitted?

Ohh... Memories..
3rd grade seperation of my AC Joint in my left shoulder.
My left arm is now about 1 3/4 " longer then my right..
takes about 20 minutes to prep my left arm for any serious lifting now...
Snowboarded for 3 years prior to.. Loved it (Grew up as a Skater in the Urb's of Montreal).
Think that next time, I'll ski.. lol....
MIss it though! Glad to hear that you had a great time! Be safe bro!

I ski maybe once or twice a year so I can ski but not great at it. I can get up and down the hilll without much trouble.
Your reasons are exactly the reasons I wanted to try boarding as well. Something to fill the time outside the gym since I am trying to lead a more social lifestyle and not be soo incredibly gym oriented.
Costs aren't bad... I picked up a cheap pair of snow pants and warm long underwear. Got a base layer to go under my jacket (alrwady had) and some wrist guards so total gear investment so far has been maybe $150? Lessons where I am are $40 an hour + rental + ski pass. So for my yesterday it was about $80 but that included a half day lift pass so after my lesson I had another 3 hours I could board for.
I won't buy board and whatnot until I figure out if I actualy like it enough and can be decent enough to do it on a 1-2 timea a week basis.
Hope that helps?

nate where do you live and what hill / mountain did you learn on?
In Ottawa. Went to Camp Fortune and I wouldn't exactly say I've "learned" anything yet. I still haven't even figured out how to fall HAHA
did your instructor show you how to go down toe side, then flip over to heel side and just go down the hill slowly on your edges gradually changing between the two? this is the best practice for someone who is learning. this way you can get comfortable switching sides and eventually build confidence to start making small carves and pick up more speed. snowboarding is like a CONSTANT leg flex of every muscle below the belt. are your calves sore from leaning on them all day?

We haven't got that far yet but I learned how to carve on my own lol
Legs aren't that sore actually. Knees are from falling but all in all pretrty good. hip flexors are sore.

I wish I had a little kiddie hill to learn on lol No bunny hillls where I went. Had to go down a full hill with lots of peeps, etc around lol
Haha speaking of snowboarding I actually went snowboarding yesterday while my body was in Ketosis and it wasn't too bad, until the drive back from the mountain. **** i felt like ass.

Should be interesting as today was leg day. Only my 2nd leg day since getting back to the gym last week after an 8-week lay off to heal up injuries!

Just keep practicing. Snowboarding is easy to catch on to. Soon you will be doing full runs without falling. The key is keep your body centered over your board, kind of like doing a squat. You really only need to keep your weight on you back leg if you are riding powder. Can't really remember what it is like to learn to ride though because I learned back in the late 80's on my Black Ice SE Snowboard.

I remember my first time... about 8 years ago.
It was way too cold, I went down the WRONG hill... this shit was waaaaay too steep... somewhere in Quebec... fell on my ass so many times I lost count. I ended up walking down the hill after about an hour of going 5-10 feet, falling, getting back up, going again. It was an embarrassing walk of shame.
Haven't been since.
Some day I'd like to conquer that mountain.

lessons will always help! You get to learn properly from qualified instructors. Learning from friends or family is not a good way unless they are qualified instructors.
Granted I am not doing anything fancy. Just edging (heel and toe side) as well as leafing down the hill by edging.
Next lesson I'm sure we'll work a bit more on skill development. but I sure was happy with 13 runs and only 1 fall. Makes it a lot more enjoyable when you aren't wiping out every 5 seconds lol

I'm psyched for my new boots and bindings to arrive. I got a helmet too so I can access all the parks and such.
Natenator, check ebay too. Usedottawa is generally way overpriced on everything, although I haven't checked it for snowboarding gear.
How's fortune this year? I think I'm going to go there sometime after this weekend.

Welp! I am going to buy my own board (found a great deal on a one-time use with burton bindings) when I get back to Ottawa (currently in San Fran).
I had my 3rd lesson before I left and am starting to really get the hang of this! I can even get off the chairlift now without falling :D And! Make it down the mountain doing turns without falling. It's only when I try to venture out of my skill zone that I take some tumbles. Weee for me!
Gonna pick up one of them helmets that have tunes too. Blazing down the hill listening to tunes makes it that much more fun. Not a fan of my earbuds slipping out all the time tho :(
Great sport (until I end up breaking something I am sure hahah)
I never thought I'd see the day when my 6'3, 300pound bodybuilder frame could be ridin' down and not simply falling down the mountain :D

I went to Fortune on Friday for the first time this season. Good times but I forgot my goggles so I was blinded several times by flying ice.
I was trying 180's for the first time and pulled off quite a few. I think I'll try 360's next time.

welp I am out of commission for a bit. Went boarding with some buddies back home on Sunday as part of our superbowl festivities and ended up with an ankle sprain and partial MCL tear.
Some dumb **** fell as she got off the chairlift and to stabilize herself she grabbed onto my arm which pulled me down causing my board to get twisted under my body.
Wanted to ****ing hit her with my board. stupid bitch
So I am out for the next 4 weeks! Gonna try to keep with with the gym 5 days a week for upperbody work or I'll go postal lol

that SUCKS dude. I ****ing hate some skiers. I remember a few years ago I was waiting for the chair lift to swing around and some douchebag skier jumped in behind me and ****ing speard me with his pole...he literally came up right behind me as i was standing at the loading line...I was like 14 so maybe the creeper wanted me to sit on his lap.
Last time I was at fortune I was walking my board along a flat part (didn't want to unbind). I had a good rythm going, and an asshole skier came by and stuck his pole in right in my path, causing me to bail and lose all momentum. He had like 8 feet to go around me...I wanted to chokeslam him so bad but obviously I did not.
Get well soon, watch out for skiers...they're ****ing deadly.

ive ridden whistler and lake louise and i can say without a doubt that riding a real mountain over some bullshit ontarian ant hill is 10 million times more fun. i refuse to snowboard within ontario now because its so ****ing pathetic.
whistler is SO ****ING FUN. if you're staying in a hotel in the village prepare to get mangled drunk every night and snowboard super hungover.....actually lake louise was like that too when i stayed in banff.....i think i have a drinking problem....

uhh I don't ride Ont. hills unless visiting friends back home. Usually over in Gatineau or at Tremblant.
Ont hills ARE a joke. There is not one hill in Gatineau that is not better than the ones in Ontario. I know they don't compared to Whistler or Lake Louis but still...
never been to gatineau but i did used to live in ottawa. i might consider riding in queerbec, but it would have to be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than AB, or BC to make it worth while.

well when you factor in flight, hotel, etc... I'd say it be significantly cheaper lol
Lift ticket @ tremblant is about $70
I just bought 66 days of riding ticket for $235 which also includes discounts on prime weekend/Holiday (new years for example) rates of 40%.
a lift ticket at lake louise for the full day was only like $95. and that mountain is much bigger than tremblant, and its about the same cost for whistler, which is bigger than both.

again factor in flight and hotel (which I assume is more costly than Tremblant to stay).
I don't need bigger LOL.
It takes me 15-20 mins to get top to bottom down the green tremblant runs and that's without stopping. I am ****ing DRAINED by the time I get down. Legs a wobbly mess lol
Really looking toi beef up my skills this year though. Want to try some jumps and get better at my carving - dynamic carving. Need to get comfortable with the speed factor but I ALSO just enjoy a casual lazy run down the hill moving side to side with my tunes on and just chillin.
So ****ing enjoyable and relaxing. Just me and the mountain. Oh, and some ****ing idiot skiers too. hehe

My house in ontario.....very far from hills......but i love the water stuff in Ont...The weather is much better over in ont as well, summer was sucky here, give a little , take a little, it all costs money....
