The Magic Hockey Helmet

An 11-year-old Sudbury boy is shaking up the hockey world with a video he made two years ago about how adults treat children at the hockey rink.

In the video, posted on YouTube, Miller Donnelly says he's noticed adults treat him aggressively as soon as he puts his helmet on and hits the ice.

"When I put it on, it changes me from a nine-year-old boy to a 20-year-old man. There are no puffs of smoke, no lightning bolts and it needs no magic wands. It just makes me older, much older - just ask all the adults in the stands," Donnelly said in the video.

"The minute I put on my magic helmet and step on the ice, adults treat me much differently. They yell at me, they curse me and they call me names," he said.

This kid prolly isnt that good, and thats why his parents grief him so much. If he performed better, he wouldnt get such a ripping. Score some goals and quit your whining.

Even though the kid seemed like he had a monologue to go through (thought he'd get into some shakespeare at some point...'suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune'...or something like that) he had some good points. I'm at a sporting complex on a fairly regular basis and I know a few hockey parents. Parents, HOCKEY parents to be precise, are some of the worst people I've ever run across. I've even been around them pregame and postgame and they're some of the most vulgar, obnoxious, unthoughtful, uncaring, and obtuse people I've ever met. I realize I'm dealing with a generality here but sorry, it fits for a good portion of them. Even the silent minority who realize it's just a game for their kids and who don't shout (or swear at the kids/refs, etc) aren't enough to off-set the rest. Personally, I think they should ban parents from the games...or at least section them off from the kids, so they can be "seen but not heard". Maybe a really nice glass partition, lol.

I have been to a few kids games and all I can say is it's the idiot parents that cause all the bullshit...the funny thing is they think they are doing their kids some good...IDIOTS

Hockey parents are literally the scum of my universe... I played hockey my entire life.. but I don't think my children will play unless they really really want to.

The kid, if anything, is underexaggerating. serious. It's amazing... just go to a minor hockey game, and you'll see what I mean.

Obviously many parents take it too far, but can you blame them? Minor hockey takes so much involvement at the parental level, they cant help but get absorbed into the gameplay. its better to have a parent care too much than not at all.

what concerns me here is this video is a manipulation of the kid by his parent(s)

true or not, this kid never came up with this.

this is almost as bad as hockey parent aggression

its like parents who bring their children to a picket line and throw a sign in their hands

The kids is too perfect in his speech, the camera works too well for 9 yo.

Even though he is saying the truth I believe that his parents have something to do with it.

I am so happy that I don't have kids...

I don't go for that at all...
the over the top parents need to step back and take a deep breath it's the KIDS on the ice not the parents and if the parent doesn't understand that in the first place the last place they should be is in the rink causing shit...

the games i have been to, the parents are awesome! Never negative comments, and never about any other kid, never know if their parent is near by... locker room, moms and dads giving cudo's to the teams.. they were so perfect i thought this was a church league..lol. You know what it was? It wasnt in the city.. it was a rural community. Everyone knows everyone etc.. and thus would appear closer.

meal ticket.... if there kids can play they hope there kid is the Next One. actually not entirely true. it's the nature of the game. sometimes parents think they could or would do better but in reality their offspring don't have the minds. good parent bad parent that's all it is. i'm sure most regret what they said. man if my son was playing it would be natural for me to cheer and cuss(NOT TO HIM). how could i find fault if he did his best and if he didn't he shouldn't be playing.

i'm so philisophical 2nite, AI's aren't working..... mommy dad yelled at me again... i don't want to play again...
