PC or MAC. Since MAC switched to the X86 architecture it is a PC. You are only truly running a MAC if you are still running a MAC with a Motorola chip. MAC switched because they saw the light and realized that PC's rule. Their OS is no longer MAC as well, it's based on UNIX. So nothing about MAC is MAC anymore. But on the bright sides the changes were smart. Their new OS is awesome.

Here is an answer to the PC vs Mac question I posted on MN a while ago.
hey zeone, i know almost nothing about comps at all but id like youre viewpoint on mac vs pc, from a guy who obviously knows a lot about pc's
If you would have asked me this questions a couple of years ago, my answer would have been a unequivocal 'PC'. As of the last 3 years or so, the dry-cut line have become much more blurred.
The reason behind this Mac evolution as it stands is that Apple finally decided to dump the older (albeit more technologically advanced) PPC processors in favor of new Intel CPUs. Where Macs were stuck before on using a very limited set of hardware and peripherals, they are now running on the same hardware platforms as the PCs. The Macs use a special bios that is a bit different than traditional bioses that have extra checks on hardware and components, but the rest is pretty much the same.
So, the truth is, that now both the "PC" and the "Mac" are really PCs, as in personal computers running on the 80x86 architecture.
So if Macs and PCs are the same in hardware, what becomes the main differentiator?
The simple (and yet not so simple) answer is the following: the OS.
From a technical point of a view, the BSD based OS X has the leading edge on the latest Microsoft offering Vista. But then Windows gets most of the games, the office suites, and most of the good software. OS X is used more to run professional raster based software like photoshop, etc...seriously, this conversation alone can fill a whole book, but both operating systems are secure enough nowadays for most user's needs and both have nice applications that you can use an enjoy, so it all boils down to user preferences.
But get this: Since both the PC and the Mac share a common x86 based architecture, and using various hacks, both the PC and the Mac can run both OS!! meaning a PC can run OSX and act as a Mac, and a Mac can run Windows and act as a PC, natively! (not using some emulation or virtual machine)...hence the reference to the blurred lines above.
The other differentiator is the hardware selection. When you buy a Mac, you basically bind yourself to the hardware that you buy, meaning you cannot easily change the CPU, video card, sound card, etc...it is a closed case design. Cool looking design, but still closed. Unfortunately, most of the "cheaper" (closed case) Macs, don't have great hardware specs when compared to PC at the same price point. But, on the Mac side, you have the equivalent of an open case PC, it is the more expensive Mac Pro that allows you to freely upgrade components in the system, just like most PCs at most price points would allow you to.
So my advice would be the following. If you really like the Mac OS and don't want to go through the hassle of building your own computer, then go buy yourself a Mac. If you really like the Windows OS and don't want to go through the hassle of building your own computer, then go buy yourself a PC.
On the other hand, if your technically savvy, and would like to build your own PC, build yourself a nice computer with a nice set of hardware (or a cheap computer if you are budget weary) then install both Windows and OSX on it, and maybe even a Linux distribution (Ubuntu for example) and you will have the best of both worlds.
Can't ever see myself buying a mac. I have nothing in common with mac users.
Rainbows & hugs?
no thx

I love Apple. Running a MacBook Pro 17".
Once you go mac you won't go back.
MAC is crap. Why I would pay twice the price for the same hardware anyway ? Recent testing from security firm affirmed that hacking a Mac is easy thing done now. If the were the same number of Mac user than PC user both of them would have problems with virus and spyware. Those who said that Mac are more pro then PC got probably no idea of what they are talking about. I'm working has an IT Tech and we always have problems with some customers who are using Mac because most of software use by organism or Government is not compatible. We need to create special restricted VPN tunnel for exemple with Mac user because otherwise it always crash.
If your a gamer ... Oh yeah you can play with the Mac, but you will need a 1899$ computer with a 600$ video card that cost 200 on PC.
So no thanks for me to get a Mac.
Get a Pc and Install both Windows and Linux so you will have the better of the two worlds.

I used to hate Macs until I had to use them at school for couple of years. I fell in love with them and now I have an imac. I LOVE my mac because I never have to worry about viruses and I rarely have to restart. To say that macs don't get viruses because they are not as popular is nonsense. If you can create a mac virus or hack into one, apple will give you $20,000. As far as I know, only one guy has collected the reward and he was able to hack a macbook. The security flaw that he exploited is now fixed. What reward does Microsoft offer?
The only downside to a mac is that most games are not compatible. IMO, if you like games then you should just buy a PS3.
Many argue that macs are overpriced. IMO, they are worth every penny. The build quality and customers service is second to none. I have the 24" imac and it uses a professional grade lcd panel that would normally cost $1000+. A professional grade monitor is vital for doing photoshop and color correcting in film(which i do).
Don't diss a mac if you have never even owned one!

============Mac OS Leopard will came with an integrated Anti-Virus because the actually got some virus issues. MAC OS is a linux so has long you know how to hack a unix kernel you can create virus and shit on Mac. Some company has also start making anti-virus for Mac (Intego Virusbarrier X5 for Mac)

============MAC hardware is PC hardware, Intel processor with nVidia or AMD CG, DDR memory, but look at price
350$ for 2x2gig DDR2-6400 for MAC .. it cost 60$ on PC for DDR-2-8500
don't even think at DDR3 630$ for 4GIG for DDR3-8500 while I got 6GIG-DDR3 12800 on PC for about 160$
You want a graphic card ?
ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB PCI-E Video Card for Mac (30995) In Stock $269.99 for this old crapy card..
Don't diss a mac if you have never even owned one!
My gf is working with MAC cuz she's a graphist and got every same programs she need on her PC too. So why bother with an MAC ? You can buy any monitor you want on PC. Plus LG is the manufacturer for MAC LCD screen.

Mac hardware = pc hardware. There is no difference now. All they've done is made it look prettier. Color calibration can be done with various softwares and tools. Even mac users use 3rd party tools for calibration.
The extra you are paying for is the OS. Nothing else. It's good for one who uses it for graphics/video, music stuff. Programmers, hardcore users, gamers, would never consider a mac as it's just too limited. A pc can do everything a mac does and a lot more at a fraction of the cost. Albeit the worry of a virus is always there but if you have a good virus scanner, you'll be ok. Plus microsoft will be releasing a virus scanner in the near future for free.
If Mac doesn't make their OS more compatible with everything out there and lower their price, their market growth will stay exactly where it is for years to come as while the pc will continue to grow.

It should be said that a Mac can do everything a PC can and a lot more. A Mac can either use Bootcamp to dual boot Windows/Linux or use Parallels/VMware to run windows along side OSX. A PC cannot run OSX (without hacks).
Apple doesn't have to worry about is so and so hardware going to work with our operating system. When you control the hardware and software, the shit better work good together. The disadvantage is just that, it aint' going to be as versatile in the hardware department. This doesn't include peripherals, I have yet found any device like mice, cameras, printers, etc that does not work on a Mac.
I do agree its great for graphics/video, music ..etc..like you know what most people use their computer for. The reason for this is the software on OSX is great. I don't know shit about video editing but I had a homemade movie up in less than 15mins in iMovie. I like how easy it is to manage all my photos with iPhoto, luv how it does face recognition and can search photos by faces . Yes there are window counterparts obviously but honestly Mac just does it much more elegantly.
If your a gamer, stick with wii/xbox/ps3/pc lol. I loaded up Crysis on my unibody macbook pro laptop booted in xp. It has a 9600M which to my surprise was playable.
Overall, Apple makes some good versatile products...not perfect but neither is PC.

Been a Mac guy for 14 years... I've used PCs for around 10 years as well. I've owned both, and for me I MUCH prefer the Apple OS over Windows. Once you get over the initial shock of how different it looks and feels and actually start to use it, you'll quickly appreciate all the little things about it that just make it better.
It isn't all show... OS X has a HUGE amount of development behind it to make it as user friendly and efficient as possible. Hardware upgrades are quite simple, as they all take the same hard drives and ram as PCs do. The towers do have their own video cards, but everyone knows Macs aren't meant for hard core gamers that like to upgrade their video cards every 2 months.
Hardware is really not that much more expensive than PCs. You're looking at maybe a couple hundred difference. I'd gladly pay the extra $$ any day and get something that looks nicer to go along with the OS. You also get top notch customer service and warranty repair that most PC hardware sellers just don't offer.
I got my 13" Macbook Pro for under $1300 after edu discount and selling the free iPod Touch that came with it. It has a 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB ram, 250GB hard drive, 256MB nvidia video card, backlit keyboard, LED backlit display (that looks ****ing amazing), sleek aluminum shell and a battery that lasts almost 7 hours with wifi.
Show me one PC laptop that offers all that for less.

ah yes the gap between your imagination and reality is quite large. ;)
ive yet to experience any hardware/os related bugs and ive been using the intel-based machines since their release (various models).
i agree with you though that there's more versatility when it comes to windows-based machines and the variety of parts you can build a machine with. plus, when you feel like upgrading there's a lot more to choose from. thats something apple computers severely lack. basically limited to ram and hard drive upgrades. to be fair though, most pc-based laptops are just as limited... it's getting into desktops where it becomes apparent.

Make your life better. Get a Mac. No viruses, quality hardware & the most stable OS out there. No Vista headaches. I've been using Mac for the past 20 yrs or so... I'd never go for a Windows based machine. iLife and iWork packages are great for home use. Professional software, well... name it... Video editing, photo editing, web design, Unix programming are awesome. This is just to name a few. Think of it this way. Almost everyone loves the iPod. It's running a lite version of MacOS X.
Their machines are super fast (even the low end ones). What is it that a consumer can do on a PC that cannot to easier and faster on a Mac? Not much. What... Excel has more features? C'mon. Oh yeah... did I mention no viruses? -- Just my two cents

All depends in what you wan to do. If gaming isn't an issue at all get yourself an Apple. Interface is easy to use all the same apps are there as in windows, no viruses, and all the flexibility of a Unix environment. Only downfall is the pricing. Ive been running a hackintosh for a quite a few years now because I became tired of the cost.

Biggest difference I find is neither of my two computers seem to have slowed down at all...whereas I found I was replacing my traditional 'pc' almost annually due to virus, spyware and general decrease in performance.
