View Full Version : bent over dumbell rows
hey bros i recently added db rows as my main-heavy back excercise... i just have some issues, in the bent over position i have my ass up way high and my back as straight as possible, but i feel the burn more in my shoulders than anything...some tips??
i try to keep my palmst at a slight angle to my body, the front of the db pointing in towards my head... should keep the palms in neutral grip completely parallel to my torso??
just to clarify im doing these rows are with both hands, not one hand using the bench to stabelize
a vid of proper technique would be great too.

Why don't you use a barbell instead? The only time I use a dumbell is when doing kroc rows (one arm rows). I would say use a barbell for some heavy ass rowing. The heavier I go, the closer I get the bar to my body. I basically slide it up my thighs sometimes and up to my lower abdomen.
As far as the dumbells....You will always feel it in your shoulders, especially your rear delt. Maybe you're doing more of a rear fly?

This sounds like what you're doing.
ive tried many times to do it with the BB just doesnt feel right... something that partially wokred for me was lock my legs into the ?roman chair? (the one where you do back extensions like reverse crunches) and then do them with a BB there, but you cant go heavy cause it killllls the lower back since its carrying the weight of your torso + the bar
yep the excercise in the link is what im trying to do... except with bigger weight! LOL

Go on youtube and look up Kroc rows, or try Mat Korczaleski. He uses heavy dumbell rows for deadlift assitance to help his lockout. His form isn't exactly textbook... but it's something to watch anyways.

If you are feeling BB rows in the lower back you may be bent over too far, try varying your stance and the angle of your torso. Inserstions can make a big difference in the leverage and this is why you will need to find what works best for you. If you are using an incline bench to do double DB rows you may feel this in your rear delt area because you are trying to clear the bench and so change the angle to stress the terres minor, supraspinatus, romboid and maybe subscapularis. Have you tried using the bench and instead of two DB's slide your torso slightly to one side for support and just row one DB?

make sure your knees are bent, pull with your elbows close to your body, think of pulling your elbows back ,your hands are just hooks
thanks for the tips guys!!

I say stick with BB rows but use a palms under instead of over grip and focus on using your elbows as the lever that will ensure you don't use your bi's as the main driver for pulling the weight.

i would suggest using barbell and lowering the weight until you learn to feel it.....perhaps use a smith machine ..i use it for rows and like it

Another variation is to lay face down on an incline bench if you want to do the rows with DB's. This takes the lower back/legs out of the movement completely so you can focus on squeezing the lats.
